the GODS came...and they conquered. The loudest rock band on
earth- deep purple created an atmosphere never experienced
before by Bangaloreans. It was a night of highway stars and
speed kings, hush with blind man crying.
As part of its world tour
deep purple were in Bangalore on the 1st of April to perform
in aid of the Gujarat relief. The concert was at the
picturesque palace grounds with Bangalore's very own Thermal
and a Quarter playing the opening band. People had come not
only from Bangalore but from most of the southern states and
places as far as Bombay and Goa, and one person from Thailand
who had flown specially for the concert. Though the concert
was scheduled to start at 6.30 pm it started only by 7.30 with
rain god threatening to dampen the spirits. Thermal and a
Quarter played for an hour fusing western rock with Indian
classical.
When Ian Gillian came on
stage there was a huge roar and applause to welcome the
biggest band to have so far played in Bangalore. They started
with Woman from Tokyo. They then went on to play Ted the
mechanic, lazy, perfect strangers and other unforgettable
numbers. The crowd which, at the beginning only half the
capacity, was occupying all possible places. There were all
kinds of people including the old, some small kids, lots of
middle aged, families and many foreigners (there were of
course the mandatory film stars ).
After about two hours Gillian
suddenly announced the end of the show the crowd was utterly
disappointed. Disappointed not because of the concert but
because their favorite number - highway star was nowhere to be
seen (or heard). DP simply couldn't resist the crowd and came
back on stage once more to perform not just highway star but
another popular number Hush. The band still retains the
quality of their hey days. Gillian's voice is as fresh as
ever. Lord is still one of the all time greatest keyboardist (Adnan
Sami could take a few lessons fro this guy). But, the
masterpiece of the night was the 'jugalbandi' of Steve Morse
on the guitar and Ian paice on the drums for the number speed
king. There are no words to describe the magic of Paice's
drumming. This piece was one class act. There was some humor
too, with Gillian taking away one stick from Paice in the
middle of this Jugalbandi. But, there was no stopping Paice as
he continued with the lone stick in his left hand!!!
The event was well organized
by DNA networks of Bombay and sponsored by BPL.
