An eye opener-"Maranayaka"!!!

People are counting days in prison because they had lost control of themselves momentarily either for personal reason or because of the situation in which they were caught. There are people who are purely victims of situations. Between the four walls, the cruel loneliness of prison life dries up whatever dreams they might have had. There is also the danger of them returning to prison life again because of their inability to adapt themselves to new situation outside prison.

It is not possible for everybody to cultivate right thinking during the period they are in prison and prepare themselves for a new life after they come out of it. It is not possible for everybody to cultivate thinking when lonely and become an introvert to rebuild their lives. Nevertheless it is possible to keep their inner being creative if they involve themselves in creative activities through interaction with others. "SANKALPA" of Mysore has done a good work!!!!

Here are few details about the drama-"Maranayaka".

The inmates of Mysore Central Prison enacted the story of drama "Maranayaka" originally "Mac Beth" of Shakespeare translated into kannada by Mr. H.S.Shivaprakash. Itseems Maranayaka was a great warrior and most obedient to his king Raja Bhadrappa Nayaka. The power was about to slip from the hands of Bhadrappa Nayaka when Maranayaka took the situation into his control and got the power back to Bhadrappa Nayaka. But there was a great despair in the inner core of Maranayaka. He thought himself "for whom after all he was fighting". At that time somebody forecast that one day he will become a king and his son will become an emperor. By getting inspiration from his wife to fulfill the forecast he started a victorious ceremony. Then he kills Raja Bhadrappa Nayaka. This was followed by many murders. He went on murdering one after another. His wife felt guilty and commits suicide. Maranayaka having the burden of all the murders on his head starts wandering in the forest.

When this drama came to an end the faces of all the inmates in the prison became pale. The inmates started asking for themselves is there not any penance for their guilt too. Everybody questions "for me?" "for me?" "for me?" "Yes", there is a time for everybody. A good day will definitely come in everybody's life only when one feels for the blunders one has committed.

The casts in the drama are a jailor, two wardens, goonda & his associate and prisoners and a "Suthradhaara", the storyteller. This drama was enacted by 26 i8nmates of Mysore Central Prison. First show was enacted in the prison itself. Later on it has seen the light at many places in Karnataka and Kerala. An activist of Kannada Theatre Mr.Hulugappa Kattimani directed the play. The force behind the drama was Mr. Revanasiddaiaha, the Inspector General of Prisons and many other DIG's.

Even though they are behind the walls their acting abilities came to light. Gandhiji has told that the prisoners are just like any other patients. He has to be treated well and when he comes out he should become a true citizen devoid of all the sins and sinful activities. This is what is expected of the police personnel. It is not the rods in their hands, which make the inmates get reformed but something else that is "Humanism".

OKC thanks for the kind co-operation of Mr.Mallesh and Mr.Paramesh and Mr. Hulugappa kattimani in publishing the article.
