Byre Gowda died of a massive heart attack on 29th July morning. The 69 year-old leader who had been among the senior Janata Dal leaders striving for the unification of the Janata Parivar had been a staunch supporter of former chief minister Ramakrishna Hegde. He is survived by wife, three sons and two daughters.
Gowda, who had served as minister for ports, fisheries and inland water transport in the Hegde Ministry, had been the minister for agriculture during the chief ministerships of H. D. Deve Gowda and late J. H. Patel. A seasoned parliamentarian, Gowda was serving his sixth term in the State Assembly having been elected to the Lower House for the first time in 1972 as an independent candidate from Vemgal constituency in Kolar district. He entered the electoral politics in 1967, but lost in Vemgal. He again lost in 1978 as a Janata Party candidate. But since 1984 he never turned back and had been repeatedly making it to the assembly. Gowda had been striving for the cause of the farmers especially in dry land areas. He had also been the leader of the opposition in the state Assembly for a brief period. Family sources said that the last rites would be performed in his native village of Gardupalya in Kolar taluk on July 31. Mourning the death of Gowda, Assembly Speaker M. V. Venkatappa said his death was a loss to the state. His foremost concern to the farming community was unquestionable and he was prepared for all sacrifice to improve their lot. May his soul rest in peace. Click here if you would like to Contribute or send a feedback.
