Pradesh All India Progressive Janata Dal President K. N.
Nage Gowda (60) died here of heart failure this morning,
i. e. on 5th February 2004. He leaves behind his wife Nagamani,
a son and a daughter.

Mr. Gowda, a former Irrigation Minister in Karnataka, came to
Delhi three days ago for discussion on organizational issues
with National President Mr. S. R. Bommai.
Mr. Gowda, belonging to the Janata Dal faction headed by Mr.
S. R. Bommai, was here to discuss organizational matters
and is understood to have developed heart complications
this morning at the Karnataka Bhavan.
He
died on way to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences
(AIIMS), sources said.
Several
leaders from Karnataka including Mr. Bommai, former Prime
Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) President Mr. H. D. Deve
Gowda rushed to the hospital on hearing the news of Mr.
Nage Gowda's death. They paid their last respects to the
departed leader.
The
former Prime Minister said Mr. Nage Gowda's death was shocking.
"He was a dynamic colleague and worked with us in the Janata
Dal days," he added.
Mr.
Nage Gowda, who was an MLC for 12 years, served Moily Ministry
as Animal Husbandry. Later, he joined JD (S) to become Irrigation
Minister during the regimes of Mr. H. D. Deve Gowda and
Mr. J. H. Patel.
A
Hegde loyalist, Mr. Nage Gowda had recently quit the AIPJD
post as Mr. Deve Gowda accused him of being a hindrance
to the JD merger. However, he withdrew his resignation when
Mr. Deve Gowda declared that the merger issue was a closed
chapter.
Born
in Kirugavalu of Malavalli taluk of Mandya district, Mr.
Nage Gowda joined active politics during 1970. In 1971,
he established the Shanthi Shikshana Samsthe at Malavalli.
In 1972, he contested the Assembly elections against Mr.
G. Made Gowda of Congress party and was defeated.
When
late Mr. R. Gundu Rao was the Chief Minister, Mr. Nage Gowda
was elected as an MLC. He was the leader of the Opposition
of the Karnataka Legislative Council when late Mr. Ramakrishna
Hegde was the Chief Minister.
