Rangayana has played an important role in making Mysore a cultural capital. The then Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde and Kannada & Culture Minister M. P. Prakash were also responsible for the growth of Rangayana.

The smooth flow of its activities, however, was hindered during the tenure of Dr. B. Jayashree. Many rifts between her and the artistes followed her appointment. Just when the conflicts were thought to have resolved after Prof. Lingadevaru Halemane took charge as the Director, things came to a standstill due to his untimely death. He was also accused of being a leftist.

Rangayana has 18 artistes and 14 staff. Their salary and pension is still in confusion. With all these confusions, the development of Rangayana has become a tug - of - war between Rangayana and the government. Plans of splitting Rangayana into Mysore, Dharwad and Shimoga and dividing the present group of artistes and sending them to these places are under way.

This has led to divided voices among the artistes as well.

These are the views some of the artistes shared with our Correspondent...

Rangayana is turning 23. We are growing old and have also gained a lot of experience. Karanth's dream should not be broken. It would be wise to use the senior artistes and build another Rangayana. But let them not break us artistes apart.
— Mime Ramesh.

New artistes should come but not at the cost of existing ones. It is difficult for women to enter the theatre world. I left a government job, my home, village, everything and followed the path showed by Karanth. Now if they ask us to go, we don’t have any other means of livelihood. We have a lot more to explore, many more dramas are to be staged.
— Geeta Mantodka.

Let Rangayana not be split, breaking the dream of Karanth. When I came here I was 20 years old. In those days itself we had acted in plays like King Lear. Now we have matured and need to do many other plays. Please let things be the way they are.
— B. N. Shashikala.

Do not commercialise and make Rangayana an exhibition. Let art survive. New age dramas and artistes should come to Rangayana. We will guide them.
— Mahadev.

Growth should be continuous. We are artistes and all we know is our art. We are not teachers to train others. Our job is to stage plays.
— K. R. Nandini.

However, over the years, Rangayana has seen the successful screening of many dramas which have won much acclaim. Last year’s festival brought with it the play Gora by the artistes of Rangayana which saw screening even after the festival. Amidst all confusion, the enter Rangayana team have come together to make this year’s Bahuroopi a success. They will also be presenting a play Shikara Surya by Dr. Chandrashekar Kambar during the festival.

With the theme being selected under the guidance of Ananthamurthy himself, the festival will play a major role in creating awareness about literature through theatre.
