The Karnataka politics took a curious twist with former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda, who is also the National President of JD (S), meeting NDA leaders including senior BJP leader and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Though the meeting has been described as a “courtesy call” in the wake of Vajpayee's decision to quit active politics, the insiders say that Deve Gowda is preparing stage for a political coup in Karnataka to come out of JD (S) - Congress coalition in order to provide an alternative Government with NDA as coalition partner.

Deve Gowda, currently on a visit to Delhi since two days, reportedly discussed with Vajpayee about the State BJP's offer to JD (S) for alliance in the formation of an alternative Government in the wake of increasing opposition to JD (S) in Congress camp with a group demanding the Congress leadership to end coalition in Karnataka.

According to sources close to Gowda in Delhi, he also met Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and discussed the issue of forming alliance with NDA in Karnataka.

Nitish Kumar is learnt to have assured to Gowda a “respectable power – sharing” in the event of an alliance. Nitish Kumar also told Deve Gowda that the JD (S) should severe ties with Congress as being a former Prime Minister Gowda had to knock the Congress High Command's doors even for minor decisions.

The sources said the State BJP's offer to accept M. Rajashekhar Murthy as Chief Minister also figured in the talks with Nitish Kumar.

The State politics will reach a crucial stage after the meeting of Congress Executive Committee at 3 pm today, i. e. 3rd January 2006 where the Congress leadership is likely to take a decision on its alliance in Zilla Panchayats and Taluk Panchayats.

Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh and KPCC President Mallikarjuna Kharge will visit Delhi on Jan. 4 for consultations with High Command leaders and a meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Jan. 5.

The JD (S), which is closely watching the developments in Congress camp where the majority opinion is in favour of alliance with Siddaramaiah - led ABPJD, is holding its Legislature Party meeting on Jan. 4 at a posh hotel.

It is said Deve Gowda also met CPI (M) leader Prakash Karat during his stay in Delhi and advised him to convey to the Congress President Sonia Gandhi his displeasure over Congress hobnobbing with ABPJD.

In the meanwhile, Mysore District JD (S) President today told media persons in Mysore that his party was not prepared for alliance with Congress in Panchayats.

A couple of minutes later, Congress leaders including former Minister H. Vishwanath announced in a party meeting in Mysore that the Congress will have alliance with ABPJD.
