Our city has every reason to rejoice over the induction of Rebel Star Ambarish as a member of the Union Council of Ministers. After all, he spent his early student days in our city. Indeed he is a child of destiny in a very special way. Grandson of the well - known violin maestro T. Chowdaiah, popularly known as Piteelu Chowdaiah, Ambarish apparently must have inherited the artistic talent as an actor. Though a Pre - University drop - out, he is intelligent enough to self - educate himself. As an actor he rose to great heights having acted in more than 200 films.
His original name was M. H. Amaranth, which was changed to Ambarish by his film mentor Puttanna Kanagal when he offered him a minor role in his blockbuster film "Nagarahavu" in the '70s. He never looked back thereafter. Over the years his popularity as a film hero belonging to the Vokkaliga community, attracted the attention of politicians, always eager to capitalise on caste. That was how he entered politics in the '90s as a Congress party member. He had once lost in a by-election. But soon, as a JD (S) candidate he had defeated the uncrowned king of Congress of Mandya G. Made Gowda in the Lok Sabha election. He, however, changed the party and joined Congress. This is the third time he was elected as an MP and indeed third time lucky to get a Ministerial berth in the Centre, nudging S.M. Krishna who was rumoured to be inducted to the Union Cabinet. How could there be two Vokkaligas in the Ministry? The elevation of Ambarish as a Union Minister will naturally rouse huge expectations from his Mandya voters. Mandya has number of economic issues to be sorted out. The major one being the Mysugar, which is in a very bad shape. The next issue that he will have to confront is the long - pending demands of sugarcane growers, which include enhancement of the sugarcane price. Mandya is an industrially backward district and in these days of IT and BT industries and Mandya being located almost halfway between Bangalore and Mysore there is ample opportunity for our Minister Ambarish to prove his ability. Being a Minister for Information and Broadcasting he should also work to upgrade the Mysore DD Transmitting Centre into a full - fledged DD Kendra with its own production facilities, keeping in mind the phenomenal growth of Mysore. As for the Kannada film industry nobody knows its problems better than Ambarish and now that he is handling that Ministry, he should come to its rescue. There is one major challenge before him calling for his immediate attention in this year of Suvarna Karnataka celebrations. That challenge is in influencing the Central Government to grant classical status to Kannada. We wish him well in his new office as Minister.
