Teaching a “special child” needs special skills and a lot of patience. Moreover, it is not possible for any teachers to impart teaching to these children but they need to be specially trained. There are very few schools in Mysore city to provide such extra care. Nireekshe is one such school in city that has been in the forefront of providing education to “special kids” making all possible efforts to make them lead normal lives.

Nireekshe, a school for special children and slow learners was started by Hema Malini Krupakar with the sole intention of serving such children in and around Mysore. Now the school is run by Kripanidhi Foundation Trust. The new building of the Trust was inaugurated in Srirampura on 15th of June 2009.

The main aim of this different school is to educate special children on par with other kids. This home school, which began with only 2 kids in 2006, has now around 25 children. The management of this school has made the intake limited to give personal attention to all the children and has about four trained service - minded teaching faculty apart from the creative activities' tutors and meditation instructor.

Children suffering from various disorders like down syndrome, autism, mentally challenged and other behaviour problems are admitted here.

Educating these kids take a long time and will be taught in different stages. In the first stage, the children are kept under observation which might take approximately six months to one year. During this period, the problems are identified and enables the teacher to take up the mode of teaching. In the next stage, the students are made to understand through flow charts, symbols, and many other innovative methods which make them understand the concepts. They are also taught money concepts on a regular basis.

Nireekshe is a hope for many children who have special needs in the learning process. Children who have difficulty in grasping or learning unlike other children are called slow learners.

Nireekshe provides special coaching for children with slow learning and those with learning disability to take up 10th std., through NIOS or KIOS in addition to pre - vocational training.

Nireekshe follows the standard diagnosis to categorise children as slow learners and learning disabled. Slow learning is a condition of children who do not have normal intelligence and not mentally retarded as well. The IQ range is between 70 - 90. Sometimes there are children who are slightly above 90 and slightly below 70 who can also be benefited by special coaching.

Learning disability on the other hand is a condition where the child has disability (not just difficulty) in learning, especially in academics. The International Classification of Diseases - 10 (ICD - 10) has specified four major points to make the diagnosis of Learning Disability (LD).

There can be different types of disabilities like specific reading disorder (dyslexia), specific writing disorder (dysgraphia), specific disorder of arithmetic skill (dyscalculia). These can be present in single or in combination. Once a diagnosis and categorisation is made by a clinical psychologist and special educator, the children are provided one – to - one coaching tailored to each child's needs.

Nireekshe is functioning under the guidance of Clinical Psychologist Dr. P. Marutham and R. Nataraj of Vishwatma Pyramid Dhyana Kendra, who conducts meditation and concentration classes.

Nireekshe hopes that the children who have any of these above problems are benefited by its special coaching.
