Background:
We generally make use of a variety of electrical and electronic gadgets in our daily lives and if we find a particular product more durable and effective than the other, we naturally go in search of products from that particular make or brand. We thus develop a trust in the products of the company or the producer. The product and its quality are both responsible for the trust and we assess them by observing the color, shape, size, material and other physical characteristics through our sense organs.
Human beings are endowed with 5 sense organs; eyes, nose, ears, tongue, and skin. These are the gateways allowing information into our mind from the objects that we observe outside. Every object possesses at least one or more physical features such as color, taste, smell, touch or some characteristic sound.
An artificial flower can be differentiated from a natural flower by testing it with one of our sense organs. Similarly metal and wood, sand and sugar, red and yellow, sweet and bitter, hot and cold, etc…, can be identified by sensory perception. These qualities are perceived by our sense organs. But qualities such as good and bad, and reliable and unreliable can’t be fully or directly assessed by sense organs. And the brand image or opinion about an object is created as a sum total of the sensory and non - sensory experiences.
The quality of a book, for instance, is not judged by its getup, title, number of pages, paper quality or printing method. Sometimes we purchase a book looking at the name of its author or publisher because they have already built a brand image or opinion in our minds. The majority of the readers could also have developed this image or opinion over the years. Though the author as an individual has not been seen or known in person, his or her image is formed in the minds of the readers. This is certainly a higher order of perception than sensory perception.
It may thus be seen that the assessment of the quality of the work of an engineer, artist, painter, carpenter, teacher, cook, lawyer, doctor, accountant or any other professional is actually act of image formation that is beyond sensory perception. The act of image formation is thus a non – sensory process and the quality or attribute that is assessed is abstract in its nature. Thoughts, feelings, emotions, impressions and visions are abstract by nature and therefore belong to the category of non - sensory and any assessment based on these abstract matters or ideas is a performance of a higher order than sensory perception.
It thus becomes clear as to how, in practical life, thoughts, emotions and feelings exert a subtle but yet powerful impact on our lives, and how stress or tension can tell on us. It will be. Therefore, be unwise to brush abstract and non - sensory processes as sheer non - sense as they sure have the power and the potential to create revolutions when nurtured in our minds.
Non – Sensory is not nonsensical:
There are reasons for accepting a law or theory in science. But great discoveries like indestructibility of the atom and certainty of observation of the position and mass of a particle have been disproved years after they have been accepted on the basis of reasoning. Also, the famous laws or theories that are found operable in the case of ordinary, sense – perceptible things have been proved to be simply inoperable in the case of subatomic particles that are beyond the purview of sense perception.
For instance, Newton’s Law of Motion that is obeyed in the case of ordinary velocities of the objective world is disobeyed in the case of higher velocities and in the movement of the celestial bodies. So there is no reason why “non – sensory” issues such as faith, belief and sentiment should be ridiculed and dismissed as nonsense by anyone.
There were no telescopes or electronic watches when our ancestors discovered the exact time and date of eclipses, thousands of years ago. Understanding subatomic particles and subconscious processes planetary movements and their effects, and highly accurate measurement of time were possible then, without any tools, leave alone high – tech gadgetry. Balanced mind and sharp intellect were in fact the only tools of trade at that time, and discovers of those days were governed by strict adherence to the spiritual laws of life, through unflinching faith and self confidence.
So, faith, belief, sentiment, religious attitudes and other matters of non – sense have actually played a pre – eminent role in shaping our civilization. Thoughts, feelings, emotions and sentiments are functions of the human mind and their velocities are beyond human computation and comprehension. If they are not bound by the physical laws or by the cause – and – effect relationship, we have to reason out their origin with appropriate non – sensory laws and theories. We, in fact, need a “sixth sense” for their observation and verification and this sixth sense had been endowed to us in the form of intuition.
