Hyundai Motors Road show:
Hyundai Motors India Limited in association with their dealers for Mangalore
Standard Hyundai Organized a Road show at the Nehru Maidan between the 5th
and the 7th of January 2001. The show aptly titled “the Power to
drive the new millennium” showcased some of the newest entrants to the Hyundai
stable. The show was inaugurated by Sri. Abdulla Kunhi, The Director of Yenepoya
Dental College.
Employment
to Kannadiga’s:
Sri
Yogish Bhat, MLA has prevailed on the Minister of state for railways Mr. O
Rajgopal
that Kannadiga’s should be employed at the Mangalore railway terminus.
This request is In view of the difficulties faced by the passengers commuting
from Mangalore as the staff manning the ticket counters, enquiries etc do not
know the local languages like kannada, tulu etc.
Annual feast of Infant Jesus Shrine:

The annual feast of the Infant Jesus shrine at Carmel Hills in
Bikarnakatta was celebrated with fervor on the 11th of January
2000. The retired Arch- Bishop of Bangalore Rt. Rev. Dr. Alphonsus Mathias
was the chief celebrant of the mass, which was concelebrated by 40 priests.
During the homily, he said that in order to weaken the darkness of sin,
there is the need to give more importance to god in our life and
strengthening our faith in god could do this. Even though man, for his
pleasure takes the route of sin, god always forgives him. However in order
to receive his blessings in totality it is necessary for man to live a life
of righteousness. Around 12000 people of all castes and creeds, faiths and
religions attended to the mass.
Protest
By soft drink Manufacturers
Owners
of more than 80 Local soft drink manufacturing units took out a protest march to
the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Mangalore inviting the state
Government's attention to the problems faced by the sector. Speaking
to the reporters, the president of the Dakshina Kannada Soft Drink
Manufacturer's Association Gopal Shetty said, the smaller units which were a
source of employment to several thousand families in the district, had been
affected by the policy of state Government which favored MNCs. One of the
biggest thorns in the flesh of these small manufacturers is the sales tax
exemption that has been granted by the state government to Coca Cola, the
multinational soft drink manufacturer.
Stamp
on St. Aloysius College Chapel released:
In
Order to commemorate the 100th year of the existence of the St.
Aloysius Chapel, a stamp depicting its rich art was released by The Union
communications Minister, Sri Ram Vilas Paswan in the presence of Sri. George
Fernandes, defense Minister, Sri. Dhananjaya Kumar, union minister of state
for textiles on the founder’s day of St. Aloysius Institutions which is
the 12th of January 2001.
Brother
Antonio Moscheni painted the pictures in the chapel between 1898 and 1901.
Sri. Paswan in his speech said that St. Aloysius Chapel and educational
institutions are known as the Rome of the east and the education they impart
is of the highest quality, thus molding the future of tomorrow. Sri. George
Fernandes reflected on the days he spent as a student at St. Aloysius
College in the 1940’s. Sri Gautham Gupta of the Indian postal Department,
detailed on the theme of the stamp. Sri Yogish Bhat, MLA, was also present.
Fr. Ralph Da Costa welcomed the gathering and Fr. Prashanth Madtha principal
St. Aloysius College proposed the vote of Thanks.

The Industries and commerce department of the Government of

Shramadaan
at Suterpet
The residents of Suterpet joined in to put in their efforts for cleaning up
the main road leading to Suterpet and the 11th cross road. This
programme was organized jointly by the Sri Shakthi Mahila Mandal, Prajwal
Yuvaka Mandal and Raghavendra Friends Circle with the co-operation of the
Mangalore City Corporation.

In
order to preserve the sanctity of our temples and places of worship which
are the corner stones of the Indian culture, and to establish a cordial and
close relationship between the temple priests, and the administrators of the
temples the “Archaka- Tantri – Mokestara sangha has been Established.
This was announced by the office bearers of this association this at a press
meeting called this past Saturday.
Rasta
Roko By the BJP
The district BJP unit organized a massive protest rally and rasta roko
programme to protest against the decision of the state government to hike
electricity prices in the state.
The protesters shouting slogans against the state government, blocked
the road near the govt. wenlock hospital at hampankatta.
The BJP leaders alleged that by hiking the power tariffs by almost 37 % the
Krishna Government had given a severe blow to the people. They alleged that
even the Bhagya Jyothi Scheme subscribers, have not been spared.
Incidentally Bhagya jyothi
is a scheme to light up the lives of the
people below the poverty line.
It was under the leadership of the District BJP leaders.
ICICI
Bank Opens an Extension Counter
ICICI
Bank has opened its 2nd extension counter and 5th ATM
counter in Mangalore Near St. Agnes special school, Mangalore.
The
New Branch was inaugurated by mme. Dr. Louella
Lobo Prabhu a well known writer and the
Mangaing director of ICICI Bank,Mr.
K. V. Kamath.

This is said to be the 46th
ATM counter in Karnataka and the 413th in the country. Mr. K. V.
Kamath also stated that the bank has 89 Branches and 19 extension
counters all over India.
