Protest
against the airport expansion project:
The residents around the Bajpe airport area, who have
lost their lands due to the expansion project of the airport
held a huge rally to protest against the slow pace at
which the rehabilitation process is going on. Even though
the plan of expansion has been taken up as early as in
1989, other than acquisition of the lands of the people
no other progress has been made it is alleged. It was
also alleged that the district administration has not
evaluated the pros and cons of the extension project,
nor has it cared about thinking of the people who will
be losing their lands, and through this the various facilities
which are essential to live in a civilized society. The
land acquisition laws of the government it is said have
been forcefully imposed upon the poor residents of the
Bajpe airport area and any appeal or applications and
pleas against acquisition before the government have still
remained under the deep heap of files at the government
offices. It is also alleged that the alternative sites
allotted to the people lack basic amenities like proper
roads, electricity and telephone access and other basic
facilities and that the district administration has been
very cold in responding to the pleas of the affected people.
