Republic Day celebrated

The republic day was celebrated in Mangalore and was inaugurated by sri. Ramanath Rai, the Minister In charge of Dakshina Kannada District. Speaking on the occasion he said that the new "Santwana Yojana", will be started in the state to solve the problems of women undergoing harassment and abuse, and that the scheme would provide financial help and shelter to such women.

He prevailed upon the people to strengthen their belief in secularism and peaceful-coexistence , equality and harmony as dreamt by the founding fathers of the country. The said that people of different cultures and traditions and who spoke different languages and followed different religions had been peacefully coexisting for hundreds of years, and that of late certain selfish minds were sowing seeds of disharmony and mistrust in the minds of people and that this shouldn't be allowed.

He said that his government has been striving to strengthen the health and education sectors which are the two important pillars of any society. He said that a task force had been established for the purpose of giving a long term perspective to the developmental works in the city.

Eleven contingents took part In the republic day parade in which the Bharat Seva Dal Contingent was awarded the best Contingent award. Sri. P. V. Kungiraman of the special Police Branch was awarded the presidents medal.The awards instituted by the district administration in various fields were also given away on the occasion. Mr. Ramo Vishwanath was given the award for meritorious performance in the field of literature, Mr. K. Govinda Bhat for Yakshagana, Mr. V. B. Hosamane for Journalism, Mr. G. R. Mugerthi for Folklore, Mr. K. R. Manjunath for art, Mr. K. Muralidhar Rao for dance and Ms. Sukshma Kumari for sports.

The Nehru Yuva Kendra awards were also given away to Mr. P. Angaram, Mr. Suresh Bajal, Mr. Gopinath Padanga, and Mr. Harsharaj Shetty.

Earthquake In Mangalore:A Light tremor was felt in Mangalore in the areas of Kadri, Bolar, Mulihithlu on the 26th of January at about 8.32 pm. When the whole of North India was being shook by a powerful earthquake.

Compufest Inaugurated :Compufest 2001 a Three day I.T. exhibition was inaugurated on the 26th of January by Sri. S. S. Kamath, The President of the Kanara Chambers of Commerce, at Hotel Motimahal. This Exhibition organized by Nagarkars Expositions, features computers, computer accessories and peripherals and consumables. Mr. Valerian Dalmeida CMD of the Intop Software Solutions was the chief guest.

Temple computerized: The recently installed Computers at the World Famous Kateel Sri. Durga parameshwari temple were dedicated to the society by Sri. C. N. Seetharam, The commissioner for charity and grants, Govt. of Karnataka. On this Occasion sri. Vidya prassanna Thirtha Swami, of the subramanya temple, The DC of Dakshina Kannada Sri. Kapil Mohan, Moodbidri MLA sri. Abhaychandra and the governing body members of the temple were present.

Cartoon Exhibition: As a part of the ongoing Karavali Utsav, a Cartoon exhibition was organized of the works of sri. Harini, sri. Prakash Shetty and sri. John Chandran.

These cartoons a satire at times of the present day socio-political systems, brought to life the realities of the world that we so many times fail to recognize in a very artistic manner. This exhibition was inaugurated by Sri. Prasad Alva, of the Prasad Art Gallery.

Poompuhar Crafts mela Inaugurated: The Poompuhar crafts mela was inaugurated on the 23rd of Janurary by The DC, Sri. Kapil Mohan at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

The last day of the crafts mela will be on the 28th of January.

At A press conference, the director of the Poompuhar Crafts mela Sri. VadivelExplained the purpose of organizing this crafts mela.

Feast of Attur Church:The St. Lawrence Church at Attur in Karkala is one of the renowned places of worship in the whole of south India . The annual three day feast of the church was celebrated amidst much fervour and piety by the devotees between the 23th and 25th of January 2001. here is a report:This feast of st. Lawrence which is held once a year in the month of January attracts lakhs of devotees to this shrine. TheView of the Church lit up with bright lights is itself breathtaking. And the statue of Jesus which shines bright with the lights which illuminate the church is a scintillating view. Devotees thronged the venue from the early mornings of the 23rd to light candles and to offer their mite to the person who died so that he could redeem the world from sin and suffering.
