Entertainment:
The
nandikeshwara nataka sangha, Mangalore, organized a variety
entertainment programme at the town hall this past week.
This prgramme, which was sponsored by Vijay Kumar, had
a musical nite by Vishal Awaaz as well as other entertainments.
During this prgramme Junior Upendra, Junior Shankernag
thrilled the audiences with their striking resemblances
to the cine icons. Students presented various dances and
mimicry programmes. The programme ended as a grand success
with the screening of the tulu comedy skit " Kaliyugada
Kudiye".
Feast:
Sri. Mariamma devasthana, Urwa is celebrating its annual
"Mahapooje" this week. On this occasion devotees thronged
the temple in large numbers and carried their offerings
to the temple on their heads (hore pooje). A Chandika
Yaga was held under the auspices of the Karnataka Pursien
fishermen's association. A magnificent Raja Gopura, at
the west side entrance of the temple was also dedicated
to the temple during the festivities. The mayor of Mangalore
Smt. Sundari presided at a religious meeting organized
to commemorate the feast.
On this occasion Sri. Divakar Udyavar, Smt. Jayalatha
Udyavar, Corporator of MCC Sri. Padmanabha Amin and others
were present.
Tragedy:
In one of the worst road accidents in the history of Dakshina
Kannada, a private bus fell into a fifty feet deep gorge,
killing six passengers and injuring more than 30, at a
place called benjanapadavu, a few kilometers away from
B. C. Road. Of the six who persihed in the accident, two
were women. The injured have been admitted to the SCS
Hospital, Fr. Muller's Hospital and Wenlock Hospital.
It is said that rash and negligent driving by the driver
of the bus, is the cause for the mishap.
Bank
employees get together: Bank employees should realize
the importance of their service and should serve with
a smile. This was said by the parish priest of the Milagres
church Fr. William Gonsalves, at the auditorium of the
Mangalore Catholic Co-operative Bank. He was presiding
over the Meeting of the All Bank catholic Bank Workers
federation. He also said that this forum would serve to
organize the Bank workers into a strong group and enable
them to share their joys and sorrows with one another
and hoped that this forum would achieve this objective.
On this occasion Fr. Denis Dsa of Sandesha foundation,
Mr. D. G. Patrao General Manager, Mr. Victor M D'silva
of the ex serviceman's association and others were present.
Protest
Planned: The Yuva Janatha Dal, Ullal branch is planning
a massive protest against wide spread corruption and the
complacent attitude of the Ullal Nagara panchayat towards
the public on the 12th of March 2001. It is said that
the district Janatha Dal president Sri. Vasanth Bangera,
Working president Sri. B. Balaraj Rai, Women's wing president
Smt. Jayalakshmi hegde and others would be participating
in this protest, according to a press release received
by us.
Protest
by Farmers: A huge protest march was held by the farmers
of Dakshina Kannada District from the Tagore Park, Light
house hill to the office of the DC under the auspices
of the DK Parisarasaktha Krishikara Vedike to protest
against the fall in the prices of agricultural produce
as well as the Free import of agricultural produce from
other countries which has sounded the death knell for
many a farmers. Farmers from all over the district expressed
their solidarity by taking part in the march. In a country
where agriculture is the main occupation the free import
of agricultural commodities will turn out to be disastrous
to the economy as well as to the majority of the population
whose occupation is farming. The protest directed against
the central govt, it is said will continue until the government
changes its outlook and acts in a farmer friendly way.
They also issued a soft warning that if something is not
done at the earliest then there is also a chance that
the ryots will riot!

Celebrated:
Bakrid was celebrated with much grandeur on the 6th
of March, at 9 am at the Idgah Masjid at Lighthouse hill
road with more than 50000 Muslim brethren joining in for
the Namaz. Khaji Kota Abdul Khader Musliar of the Jumma
Masjid led them in prayer. The president of the governing
body of the Mosque and social activist Sri. Puthu Bava
Haji, The Vice president of the Muslim central committee
Haji C. Kunhipakki, Social worker Haji Haneef, INTUC District
president Haji CA Rahim, Sri. Razak Haji, Secretary of
the state unit of IUML Haji Ahmed jamaal, Advocate Sri.
Bashir Ahmed, Deputy mayor Sri. Bashir baikampadi and
others took part in the namaz. Several public figures
have wished the people on this day. Sri. Dhananjaya Kumar,
union Minister of state for textiles in his message has
wished that this feast will bring a lot of peace and happiness
to the people and that this feast will bring the much-needed
harmony among the people of the nation. Former chief minister
Mr. Veerappa moily, Smt. Motamma, Minister in charge Udupi
district, MLA's Sri. Yogish bhat, Sri. Vijaykumar shetty,
