Annual
Day: The
Karnataka Polytechnic Industrial Training Institute celebrated
its annual day this past week. In this connection several
competitions were organized for its students, such as
drawing, devotional songs and rangoli. There was a lot
of response from the student community to this programme.
Jodukere
Kambala: The closing ceremony of the renowned JoduKere
Kambala " Mudoor Padoor" was held recently under the leadership
of Sri. Ramanatha Rai, Minister in charge Dakshina Kannada
district at Kaval Katte near Bantwal. Chaturbhashanabha
Sri. Prakash Rai and Actress Ms. Umashri through their
esteemed presence increased the grandeur of the programme.
Sri. N. U. Harish, President of the Karnataka Pradesh
Yuva Congress, Sri. Melvin D'cunha president of the APMC,
District Congress president Hajee Ibrahim were the guests
of honour. People from distant corners of the state, TV
channels reporters from the distant national capital witnessed
the grandeur of an age old sport, which has been said
to be a "srimanthara Kreede" or a rich mans' game. All
the invitees and guests were welcomed at the entrance
by Sri. Ramanatha Rai, The honorary president of the organizing
committee and Sri. Padmanabha Jain working president of
the committee.
Felicitated:
The Karnataka Tulu Academy, Mangalore felicitated
Sri. Kudkadi Vishwanath Shetty recipient of the Karnataka
Kalashri Award this past week. The programme was presided
over by Sri. Balakrishna Shetty, President of the Tulu
Sahitya Academy and Smt. Jayalakshmi Alva, founder directress
of the Sri. Devi Nritya Kendra was the chief guest. On
this occasion, Sri. Damodar Nisarga, Sri. S. H. Shivarudrappa,
Sri. Kathleen Rodrigues, Kumari Shubha and other members
of the Tulu Academy were present.
Annual
Day: The University College, Mangalore celebrated
its 97th annual day this past week in the college premises.
It was presided over by Prof. S. Gopal, Vice Chancellor
Mangalore University. Sri. Veerappa Moily, former chief
minister was the chief guest. The other dignitaries present
were, the principal of the university college Prof. K.
Narayana Nair, and the representative of the governor
Prof. Dr. S.S. Hoogar, the lecturers, students association
office bearers, students and others were present in large
numbers.
Care
for the elderly: Fr. Muller's Hospital and medical
college in association with Vishwas, a social service
organization had organized a three-month training programme
for its medical students, on caring for the elderly. The
concluding ceremony was held this past week at the Auditorium
of the hospital. Certificates were distributed to the
students who had participated in this programme. Speaking
on this occasion the director of the Fr. Muller's institutions
said that the elderly were being sidelined in the medical
field, whether it was for treating them or attending on
them when they were sick and that the need of the moment
was to ensure that this didn't happen any more. Therefore
the Fr. Muller's institutions would be shortly opening
a hospital for the elderly, which would cater to their
needs in the most professional manner. In this regard
an out patient department would be opened shortly, and
Dr. Keshava Bhat would be the Head of this department.
He also said that a course on caring for the elderly had
also been planned and in this regard, necessary permission
had been also applied for. Addressing the students, he
said that caring for the elderly was not only an honorable
work, but also one, which would bring a lot of peace of
mind, happiness and blessings. Ms. Devayani spoke on behalf
of the trainees. Dr. Olinda periera, Directress of the
Vishwas Organization welcomed the august gathering. The
chief trainer Ms. Anita D'souza proposed the vote of thanks.
Sr. Lillis of the Bethany convent and member of the Sahodaya
organization, Ms. Jacintha D'souza principal of the school
of social work, Roshni Nilaya, Ms. Rose sequeira, Ms.
Lizzie Periera, Dr. Pave, Ms. Sofie Rodrigues and other
members of Vishwas were also present.
150
Years of GSI: The Geological survey of India is celebrating
its 150 anniversary this year. On this occasion a review
programme of its achievements was held this past week
at the Taj Manjarun. Capt. R. Ram Kumar, Chairman of the
New Mangalore port trust by lighting the lamp, inaugurated
it. Sri. Krishnunni, Sri. Ravishankar, Sri. Chatterjee,
Sri. Subramaniam the directors of the GSI were also present.
At the programme the contribution of the GSI to marine
Geo Survey, Mining and industrialization of the country
were highlighted upon.
Consumer
Protection Day: The consumer protection forum celebrated
the consumer protection and awareness day on The 15th
of March. On this occasion a training seminar was held
to educate the consumers on their rights and duties so
as to form them into responsible consumers. On this occasion
MLA Sri. Yogish Bhat, DK DC Sri. Kapil Mohan, Sri. Peter
the president of the consumer protection forum, Sri. Beerendra
of the metrological department, Sri. Shyamal Bhat, president
of the consumer disputes redressal forum and other dignitaries
were present.
Protest
held: The Yuva Janatha Dal, Ullal Branch held a massive
protest against wide spread corruption and the complacent
attitude of the Ullal Nagara Panchayat towards the public
on the 12th of March 2001. The district Janatha Dal president
Sri. Vasanth Bangera, Working president Sri. B. Balaraj
Rai, Women's wing president Smt. Jayalakshmi hegde and
others participated in this protest.
