State-level gatekeepers needed to check yellow journalism-Minister:
Journalists should follow a code of conduct, which will help them stand within the framework of journalistic ethics, said H. C. Srikantaiah, Revenue and district in-charge Minister. He honored some journalists of Hassan and Belur and the president and secretary of Karnataka Patrika Academy at a two-day journalists training camp organized at Bhadrakali Bana in Galihalli in Belure taluk last evening. He said discipline would ensure that corruption does not enter this field. "Some approach us for money. If we do not give in, they writhe abusive reports spiced with filthy phrases in their publications," he said. Small newspapers mushroom daily particularly in cities like Bangalore and create a horde of journalists. Only a strict code of conduct would help journalists maintain some decorum in their writing, he said.

Month-old bridge collapses:
A bridge constructed at Sainatha Road in Arsikere town, about one month back, has collapsed due to substandard work, the people of the town said. They said Chandragiri Constructions of Kasaragod took up the construction and it was supervised by consulting engineering services. They said the same agency had done many other works and experts to know the facts should examine the quality of those works.

Protest against idol desecration:
Some miscreants pelted stones at the taluk tahsildar and sub-registrar offices at Holenarasipura town while various associations were observing demonstrations protesting against the Ambedkar statue desecration at Hassan recently.

Hassan central library to have study center- DC:
Deputy Commissioner L. K. Ateeq has said that a well-equipped study center would be started at the district central library. Presiding over the inauguration of free coaching and private tuition at Kannada Sahitya Parishat building on Monday he said, the center would have a vast collection of books. Students seeking examinations at PU level, CET and other competitive courses can make use of the center, he added. He said lecturers of government and aided institutions should not engage private tuitions as this is against the Government order. If a teacher has to take up lectures for three hours, then he needs to prepare for a minimum of six hours. It is impossible for him to work for more than six hours.

Protest against attack on Revanna:
Huge procession was taken out through the main streets of the city in support of the call given by JD (S) leaders to protest against the attack on former minister and JD (S) leader HD Revanna by Congress leader and former Zillah Panchayath member K. M. Shrinivas at Holenarasipur recently. The agitators demanded the State Government take up drought relief works in the district. Councilor C.R. Shankar, H. C. Manjuntha and Phaniraj (both former municipal vice-presidents) and Narayana Gowda led the agitation. The procession started from Hemavathi statue near Maharaja Park and continued up to NR Circle. The agitators shouted slogans against the State Government and against Shrinivas. They also staged a demonstration at the premises of the office of the DC before submitting a memorandum to him.

Ban on arrack sale demanded:
Members of self help groups of Adihalli village in Channarayapatna taluk took out a protest agitation against the illegal sale of arrack in their village. The women of the village urged Deputy Commissioner L. K. Ateeq to ban the sale of arrack in their village. The Deputy Commissioner assured them to take suitable steps in this regard.

Funds for statue installation:
The Ambedkar New Idol Installation Committee at its first meeting has decided to collect funds to install a new statue through contributions from philanthropists, voluntary organizations and local bodies in the district, Deputy Commissioner L. K. Ateeq, who is also the chairman of the committee said. He presided over a meeting held on Monday evening. The Deputy commissioner has instructed officers of the Public Works Departments to make a plan and an estimate to prepare a bronze idol of Dr Baba Saheb Ambedker. R Narayanaswamy, ZP CEO, Superintendent of police M Nanjunda Swamy and other senior officers were present.

Misappropriation of funds:
S. H. Puttaranganath, MLA from Belur constituency, has alleged that authorities working at the Yegachi irrigation project had misused funds amounting over Rs 1 crore at the project in Belur. Speaking to media persons in Belur on Monday he alleged that an assistant executive engineer had misused funds amounting to Rs 40 lakh in 1996. He said some miscreants had forged his signature on a letter in which they had asked the higher authorities to shift the Yegachi reservoir office to Hassan from Belur. The issue if under verification by the Lokayukta, he said. Another forged letter related to Kittoor canal is also under investigation, he added.

Freedom fighter dead:
H. P. Nanjundiah, a freedom fighter from Belur taluk died on Aug 11. He was 84. He leaves behind six sons and four daughters. Nanjundiah was the taluk board chairman. He was the president of the agriculture marketing committee at Belur. His funeral took place at his native Hebbal village in Belur taluk on Monday. MLA S. H. Puttaranganath, Y. N. Rudresh Gowda former MP, ZP vice-president Chandrakala Nagesh, former ZP president G. T. Indira and others have condoled Nanjundiah's death.

JD (S) chief quits standing committee:
C. R. Shankar, JD (S) leader and city municipal councilor, has tendered his resignation from the membership of the municipal standing committee. He said several allegations (of receiving bribes) had appeared against standing committee chairman MC Vasudev in the local newspapers. "After reading such allegations I have decided to quit to avoid such allegations against me since all these years I had served society honestly," he said.

Completion of lift irrigation projects:
The State Cabinet has decided to complete all pending Lift Irrigation works in Hemavathi irrigation project in the district, said Revenue Minister H C Srikantiah. Speaking to media persons at Channarayapatna on Wednesday afternoon, he said the Cabinet had approved the Halebeedu Madihalli, Hiresave and Kenchenahalli lift irrigation works at the meeting held on Tuesday. He said administrative sanction has also been accorded to these four LIPs. The State Government has decided to ask the beneficiaries of irrigation water in the State to contribute some money by way of water cess, Minister Srikantiah said.

Minister distributes compensation:
The Revenue Minister distributed Rs 47,000 as compensation to 67 people who had suffered from natural calamity at Hosahalli in Shravanabelagola hobli. M. P. G Puttaswamy Gowda distributed Government compensation to 247 persons of Bagur-Navile tunnel affected area. In all, compensation amounting to Rs 6,84,860 was distributed. "We will strive hard for meeting the remaining demands of villagers including crop and other compensation which is pending for the last two decades", Puttaswamy Gowda said. Srikantiah inaugurated a computer at the police station and Puttaswamy Gowda inaugurated the touch screen at taluk office. Deputy Commissioner L. K. Ateeq, ZP CEO R Narayanaswamy, Superintendent of Police M Nanjundaswamy and others were present.

Repairs to school building sought:
The School Betterment Committee members of Channarayapatna primary school have requested the Deputy Commissioner to take up repair works of the school building. The members said the building was in a dilapidated condition and it was dangerous for students to sit in the classrooms. Deputy Commissioner Ateeq and Chief Executive Officer Narayanaswamy have asked executive officer N. C. Mahesh to prepare a plan and bring it to the notice of the Zilla panchayat.

Absence at meeting questioned:
Deputy Commissioner L. K. Ateeq has taken serious exception to district information officer KR Tope Gowda's absence at the Ambedkar statue installation committee meeting held on Tuesday evening. When asked about his absence, Tope Gowda replied that his department director had visited the office during the meeting hours. The Deputy Commissioner said he should have made necessary arrangements for his subordinate to attend the meeting. ZP Chief Executive Officer R Narayanaswamy objected Tope Gowda's silence for informing the former about the director's visit.
