Forest department claims land cultivated by poor families:
Deputy Commissioner L K Ateeq has promised to retain the land at S.N. 42 Tirupathi Halli for the poor Families who were cultivating it for the last several years. It is now being taken over by the forest department. Responding to the suggestion of G Puttaswamy Gowda, MP, he said it was difficult to get the forestland for any other purpose, but "I have talked with the divisional forest officer to spare this land for the poor Lambada families who are depending entirely on it for livelihood.

Pratibha Puraskar awards given:
Students should cultivate competitive spirit in all aspects, said Ramesh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Hole Narasipur. Speaking after distributing Pratibha Puraskar at the Vasavi Charitable Trust function, he said students should try hard to acquire merit. He distributed awards and prizes to merit students. K. G. Surendra Gupta, trust president, Vishwanatha Reddy, A. G. Ramanath, Prabhu Kumar, Balaji and others spoke.

KSRTC dues to revenue dept:
The KSRTC has to pay Rs 34,000 to the revenue department at Arkalgud since it has acquired land, which belongs to the department for the purpose of bus stand extension. But the KSRTC authorities did not sanction the required amount for a long time and hence the bus station extension work has not yet started. Sensing the importance of this land, Arkalgud legislator A Manju donated the required amount in the name of his mother, late Mayamma, and got the land registered in favour of KSRTC. He also performed bhoomi pooja after the transfer of land. Speaking to media persons at Arkalgud, he said the work would be done on a war footing and completed within a week. All buses will be operated from this bus stand, he said. "MP G Puttaswamy Gowda has contributed Rs 10 lakh and I have contributed Rs 5 lakh from my legislator's fund" Manju said.

ABVP to observe Demands Day:
The Akhila Bharateeya Vidyarthi Parishath, ABVP has decided to observe September 26 as Demands Day said Vishwanatha Pai, state secretary. He told media persons that the Government has failed to fulfill the requirements of the students and the unemployed educated in the country. Shikshanadalli Parivarthane and Udyogavakasha is our main demand and a massive rally at New Delhi will be held on November 26 with one-lakh student demonstrators and a signature campaign will conduct from September 1 to 20 to secure ten lakh signatures, he said. The Government should also stop the educational trade by the private institutions right from pre primary classes. He said that the ABVP supports the cause of the private educational institutions, but was against the indefinite bandh.

HUDA chief promises new road for pedestrians from villages:
B K Manjunath, chairman, Hassan Urban Development Authority, has promised to construct a proper road behind the pravasi mandir and CSI Institution for the benefit of rural people who want to reach the government hospital, DC, AC offices and courts on foot, avoiding the present circuitous route. Manjunath said the present road was through either A. V. K. College road or Narasimharaja circle and the new road would make it directly accessible to the court and hospital. The CSI authorities had closed the road about six years ago. He requested the police authorities to keep an eye on the pedestrian path, as there were reports of anti-social elements harassing ladies.

New IT courses to be introduced:
The All-India Council for Technical Education has given permission to the Bahubali Engineering College in Shravanabelagola to start an Information Technology course from this academic year. Half of the 30 seats allotted will be filled by the CET and the remaining 15 by the management, said the principal. The college, which caters to the needs of the rural students, offers communication, mechanical, industrial production etc.,

Journalists' forum condemns police action:
The District Working Journalists' Association has strongly condemned the action of the Sakleshpur police who arrested the editors of "Janadeepa" a daily from Hassan at Sakleshpur recently. The association, which held a meeting on Friday noon at Pravasi Mandir, took serious exception to the manner in which the police had taken action against the editor. The article published in the said paper was not provocative and there was no necessity for the police action against the newspaper.
