Visual
media not a threat to newspapers, says DC:
Journalists should ensure that there is no distortion of
the truth in their reports, said the new Deputy
Commissioner of Hassan, SL Ateeq. Felicitating B. R.
Mahalingappa of Banavar town on the eve of the Patrika
Dinacharane at Sahithya Bhavan this afternoon he advised
media persons not to allow his personal opinion colour
news items. If they felt like expressing their opinions,
they could feel free to do so in editorials and analysis
columns. The Press has the responsibility of moulding
society. Quoting the example of the Emergency period, he
said the public had vociferously opposed censorship, which
shows how much they respected the media. Regarding the
challenge posed by the electronic media, Ateeq said;
"America has had TV channels since 70 years. But the
readership of newspapers has not come down.
Call
to check malaria in Hassan:
People in rural areas must take up preventive measures to
check malaria, said Zilla Panchayat President B R Vasudev
on Friday. Speaking after inaugurating a seminar on
'malaria' at Juttanahalli Samudayabhavan in Hiresave hobli
Channarayapatna, he said it was essential to maintain
clean and hygienic atmosphere to prevent such diseases.
C'magalur
DC injured in mishap:
Chikmagalur DC Parshwanath was injured when the car in
which he was traveling collided with a tempo at the
by-pass road near the National Highway on the outskirts of
the city on Monday morning. Police said he has been
shifted to Manipal Hospital for treatment after first aid
was administered at the district general hospital here.
His car driver also sustained injuries in the incident,
the police added. New Deputy Commissioner S L Ateeq,
Superintendent of Police M A Saleem and other senior
officers visited the spot and met the injured deputy
commissioner, police added.
Protest
against Karnataka Bank:
Ryots of Hanyal, Keragod, Mallagatta, Rudrapatna and other
villages in Arkalgud taluk staged a protest against the
Rudrapatna branch of the Karnataka bank for not extending
loans for agriculture purposes. Arkalgud MLA A Manju led
the agitation. Bank branch Manager Umesh promised farmers
to initiate proper action in this regard before July 11.
Agriculture
materials distributed:
The beneficiaries of the Government schemes should make
best use of the schemes, requested Sakleshpur taluk
Panchayat President Shivappa. Presiding over the
distribution of special components to tribals at
Chikkanaikanahalli, Siddhapura, Hanbal, Udevara and
Doddakallur in Sakleshpur taluk he said it was found that
many beneficiaries would sell the materials given to them
at throwaway prices. He said the representatives had
identified the genuine persons and helped them in getting
the government benefits. T. P. Vice-President Vishalakshi
distributed free insecticides-spraying machines to the
benefits from the agriculture department. Dr K R Srinivas
of Raitha Samparka Kendra proposed a vote of thanks.
Villagers
demand bus facilities:
Residents of Kogilemane, Siddharahalli, Kushavara and
other villages in Belur taluk staged a Rasta Roko near
Kogilemane village demanding better bus facilities to
their villages. They said students; vegetable and milk
vendors who traveled everyday to the city were suffering
due to inadequate bus services. Ravi Kumar, Assistant
traffic Manager from Chikmagalur rushed to the spot and
promised the agitators the necessary facilities. Swamy
Gowda, traffic controller from Hassan, also met the
agitators and assured them to provide better bus
facilities from Hassan depot.
Panic
buttons pressed in Hassan as Manipal finance co. closes
shop:
Panic buttons were pressed when depositors of the Manipal
Finance Company came to know that the Manipal Finance
Corporation had closed shop. Hundreds of depositors
gathered at the Manipal Finance Company here from
yesterday morning and demanded their deposits to be
returned. Some lucky ones who had "pigmy" and
savings account holders have succeeded in getting back
their amount. But many others were not so successful.
Car
festival at Amatagiri:
The car festival of Sri Laxmi Venkataramana Swamy at
Amatagiri, Thirupathi, near Arsikere will be held on July
21. Utsav would begin from July 14 with Panchamrita
Abhisheka on the same morning. Convener and Dharmadarshis
of the temple have requested the devotees to participate
in all the utsavs and car festival.
New
Cong committee members:
Hassan District Congress Committee members will be
nominated by the KPCC within a fortnight, said C V Rajappa,
one of the general secretaries. He said the taluk
committees would be constituted soon. He said the Congress
was the only single party, which could lead the nation.
Hence party workers at the grassroots level have an added
responsibility of strengthening the party, he said.
Boy
injured after cheetah bite:
Eight-year old Chandrashekhar of Bommanahalli was injured
severely after a cheetah bit him when he had gone out of
his house to attend the call of nature on Monday night.
The animal had killed a boy earlier and this is the second
incident, villagers said. Villagers had pleaded with the
forest officers to initiate proper measures to protect
them from cheetah menace.
Rotary
office bearers appointed:
The new office bearers of Rotary Sunrise, Hassan, will be
installed at a function to be held at IMA Hall at the
Industrial Growth Centre on Mysore Road. Suryaprakash Bhat,
District Governor nominee, will be the chief guest, K. P.
Girish, assistant governor, will distribute free books and
uniforms to needy students of various schools. HC Jayaram
and his team will be in charge this year.
Tractor
overturns, youth killed:
Govinda (23) belonging to Marulakkihalli in Arkalgud taluk
was killed on the spot when the tractor in which he was
traveling from his native village overturned on Arkalgud
H. N. Pura road. Another youth Jayashankar, who was
injured, has been admitted to the hospital at Arkalgud.
