Farmers advised to
make use of crop insurance scheme:
The Government is alive to the plight of the farmers and
came to their rescue by introducing the crop insurance
scheme, said L K Ateeq, the new Deputy commissioner, here
on Friday. Speaking at the national seminar on
"agriculture insurance" organized by the General
Insurance, agriculture and other departments in the joint
director's office premises, he said the Government had
given the facilities to the Farmers who had not availed
any loan from the banks or other financial institutions.
Earlier it was confined only to those who had borrowed, he
pointed out. Now the Farmers of hassan district should
open an account in the nearest bank and fill the insurance
premium before July 31 to avail the insurance benefit for
their failed crops, he said.
Mini-Vidhana
Soudha:
DC Ateeq on his first visit to Holenarasipura town issued
instructions for the completion of Mini-Vidhana Soudha
within 15 days. He visited the local municipal office,
taluk office and also the taluk library. He was astonished
to note that the entire staff of the library had signed
the attendance book but it was not around. The public
complained to the DC that the library remained closed for
the last 15 days. Councilors Shantharaju, Gokulmurthy,
Laxman, H G Kumar and Ravishankar complained to the DC
that the poor people who had paid Rs 5,000 each for
getting Ashraya houses had not received the same since
years. The authorities had constructed 2,400 houses but
half of them were found to be substandard, they said and
asked the DC to order an inquiry into the same.
Hassan ZP team
to meet CM for drought relief:
A Zilla Panchayat delegation will meet the Chief Minister
in Bangalore next week to seek additional funds to combat
drought in the district, said B R Vasudev, ZP president.
He was speaking to the media after visiting Hassan, Alur,
Belur, Sakaleshpur and Arkalgud taluks to study the
drought situation. He said the Zilla panchayat would seek
additional funds for initiating famine relief works. When
his attention was drawn to the statement of Deputy
Commissioner L K Ateeq that there is no scarcity of
drinking water, Vasudev said the Deputy Commissioner had
not got correct information from his subordinates.
2 men die as
tipper overturns:
Two persons were killed on the spot and six others injured
when a tipper overturned near Belur on Hassan road on
Wednesday. The deceased have been identified as Doreswamya
and Vadamalai (both 40 years). The injured - Mohan Kumar,
Kapildev Desval, Ramesh, Mallesh, Armugam and Jayapal -
have been admitted to the government hospital at Belur.

b'day celebrations:
The Vivekananda Yoga Shikshana Shale celebrated T.P.
Kailasam birthday on July 28. Artiste Gunduraj sang
Kailasam's poems and JR Kenche Gowda, Journalists'
association president, presided over the function.
Unidentified
man's body found:
The body of an unidentified man was found in the premises
of Hindu Mukthidhama in Sakleshpur. Police found a
notebook in his pocket in which there was an address
mentioned as Vendix Rego, c/o Anne Gowda, contractor,
Malavalli.
Inauguration of
Natakotsava:
Mangala Sathyan, noted writer and president of sixth
district Sahitya Sammelan, inaugurated Natakotsava at
Kalabhavan on July 26. The Natakotsava was arranged in
memory of H.S. Krishnamurthy who was president of the city
municipality for two terms and took steps for the
development of the city. Chandrashekar Patil, renowned
writer, presided over the function. Chandraiah Naidu,
president of district Kannada Sahithya Parishat,
Chikmagalur and K Seshadri, editor of a local daily, were
the chief guests. Deputy Commissioner L.K. Ateeq presided
over the concluding function on the evening on July 28.
Gudihalli Nagaraju, president of Karnataka Working
Journalists' Association, delivered the valedictory
address.
Sports
competition held:
Failure is the stepping-stone for success, said H.B.
Madana Gowda, president of Jilla Kannada Sahitya Parishat.
Speaking after distributing prizes to the winners of the
city-level sports competitions arranged by Netaji Trust
and other associations at the district stadium, he said
participation is more important than winning or losing the
event.
Demand to waive
off loans:
The taluk unit of the Karnataka Raitha Sangha has
requested the State Government to declare Hassan taluk
"drought-hit' since crops have dried up due to
failure of monsoon. Members assembled at he Pravasi Mandir
under the chairmanship of MP Javaregowda and resolved to
request the Government to waive off of agriculture loans.
They said the KPTCL must remove all meters fixed to
irrigation pump sets. They demanded fodder and drinking
water to cattle in rural areas.
Govt ignoring
farmers JD (S):
The State Government has discriminated by declaring only
Channarayapatna taluk as famine-hit area, said Patel
Shivaram, JD (S) district president. Speaking at
Doddabeekanahalli after distributing free uniforms and
books to students he said crops sown in Hassan taluk had
dried. Farmers had lost crores of rupees and agriculture
labourers were rendered jobless. Even when there was no
means of livelihood, the Government had not declared this
taluk famine-hit. Potato cultivators in Hassan, Belur,
Alur, Arkalgud, Holenarasi Pura and other areas who had
invested over Rs 50 crore were suffering as their crops
have failed. Agriculturists are frustrated and they have
no means to sustain hence it was necessary to declare the
entire district as drought-hit, Shivaram said. Mayi Gowda,
president gram panchayat of Chennagihalli distributed
uniforms. S Dyave Gowda, advocate, Nagaraju, president
Milk Producers' association, N Nanjunde Gowda, journalist,
Hyaryane Ramesh, gram panchayat members member and other
spoke.
B'lore-M'lore
highway proposal:
A proposal to convert Bangalore-Mangalore highway as a
four-line road is under consideration, Deputy Commissioner
L K Ateeq said. Speaking to media persons he said the
industrial department has prepared the proposal to submit
it to the Government. There is a proposal to implement
special economic zone by the union Government for which
thousands of acres of land have been acquired after a
survey was conducted by the authorities, he said. The
report will be submitted to the government by the end of
September, he added. MLAs G V Siddappa, K H Hanume Gowda
and S H Puttaranganath, Hassan MLC B V Karigowda and civic
chief Channaveerappa were present at the meeting.
Demand to vacate
stay order:
Villagers of Bittagodanahalli at the outskirts of the city
have requested the Deputy Commissioner to vacate a stay
order for distribution of Ashraya sites. Legislator K H
Hanume Gowda, who is also the president of the taluk
ashraya committee, has assured villagers to sanction
ashraya sites at S. N. 86 Government Land of 2.26 acres.
But when the process began, the Deputy Commissioner issued
stay orders for site distribution.
Demand to remove
Minister:
The minorities Yuvajana Federation at Sakaleshpur took out
a demonstration in protest against the appointment of M.L.
Ustad as the Wakf Minister. Since Ustad has no primary
knowledge about religion he should be removed, they said.
Federation conveners Maland Mehabood and Ibrahim Yadgar
spoke. Tippu Yuvaka Sangha, Badriya Youth Association,
Auto Drivers' Association. Rashid Balaga, Anemahal, and
other organizations participated.
Government not
against private tuition, says DC:
The government is not against private tuitions. Only
Government college lecturers and professors, who were
getting UGC pay scales were prohibited from conducting
private coaching classes, said L K Ateeq, Deputy
Commissioner. Speaking at a "samvada" programme
arranged by him to seek the opinions of students and
parents on private tuitions he said the Government Act and
rules established for the entire State cannot be modified
for this district. He however added that facilities would
be provided to make alternate arrangements for the benefit
of students.
Christians asked
to remain united, utilize prime lands:
The Christian community here is a most privileged as they
own some of the prime lands of the town. However, internal
squabbles have destroyed their unity, said state Minister
for Infrastructure Development and Aviation, T John.
Speaking at a foundation-laying function for a
Samudayabhavana to be built at a cost of Rs 30 lakh at the
CSI Wesley church here, the Minister said the Church of
South India were given these lands by the erstwhile
British rulers. He called upon the community to remain
united and make the best use of all this property. John
promised to contribute his share for the construction of
the Samudayabhavan. G Puttaswamy Gowda, MP, who laid the
foundation stone, also promised to contribute from the
MP's found. H C Srikantiah, revenue and district in charge
Minister, who presided over the meeting, also assured all
possible assistance.
