Southren Rly staff stage dharna:
The Southern Railway employee staged a dharna against the Rakesh Mohan report. The dharna was staged under the leadership of Employees' Association President H M Shantharaju and Secretary B P Baburao. They were demanding that the Union Government reject the report in the interest of the employees.

Compensation for deaths:
The Union Government has clarified that only Rs. 50,000 can be given under Central relief funds in case of deaths in natural calamity, Deputy Commissioner Kaniram said. In a recent circular, the Government has objected to extending Rs 1 lakh under CRF relief, he said. All the States are paying only Rs 50,000 but Karnataka is paying Rs 1 lakh as compensation, he added. Now, the Union Government has clearly stated that the compensation amount should not exced Rs 50,000, he told.

Vokkaligara Sangh chief feted:
Self-confidence is very important to achieve any goal in life, former chairman of Karnataka Administrative Tribunal Harnalli Ramaswamy said. Felicitating D B Basave Gowda who has been elected as President of the State Vokkaligra Sangha, Bangalore, he commended Basave Gowda's services as the Vice-President of Malnad Technical Education Society. Secretary D A Chandre Gowda, treasurer C S Krishnaswamy, assistant secretry Puttaraju, HUDA President B K Manjunath, K M Rudrappa, H V Thimmegowda, H P Nagendriah (all directors) and K A Krishnamurthy, Principal of Malnad Engineering Colleges spoke on the occasion.

Ban on liquor sale urged:
There are 5,000 self help group associations in rural areas of the district and most of them have already submitted memorandum the Deputy Commissioner urging him to ban the sale of loqour in their villages. Hence the officers of the State excise department should respond to the pleas of the rural women, urged C Vijayakumar, secretary, Neo-Literates Development Association.

Shivananda Lahari programme:
The Vedantaha Bharathi Institution, Krishnarajanagar and district Shankara Sandesha Saptaha Sanchalana Samiti, Hassan, jointly organised Shivananda Lahari programme at nine centres in the district for the last six days. The valedictory function was held at Shankar Mutt on May 31. Sri Shankara Bharathi Swami, Yoganandeswara Mutt, Krishnarajanagara and Sri Jagadathmandadaji of Ramakrishnashrama, Ponnampet, blessed the devotees on the occasion.

Action for illegal construction:
The Hassan Urban Development Authority has issued notices to the Deputy Directors of Public Instruction, head master of a Boy's High School at R C Road and the executive engineer, for constructing a building, which was meant for a playground. Hassan Urban Development Authority President B K Manjunath and Commissioner Pranalinga Shivasali have issued show cause notice to the trio and demanded clarification from them or to demolish the construction since it was illegal. According to the comprehensive development plan of the city, 44,000 sq meters have been earmarked for the playground at the high school grounds. Two constructions measuring 90 x 30 and 40 x 40 are coming up in that place without getting formal approval by the authorities. They said if the constructions were not demolished serious action would be initiated against them.

Youth dies after bike hits pole:
Aijaj Pasha (21), a resident of Premnagar Extension in Sakleshpur was killed on the spot when his motorcycle hit a telephone pole. Police said the incident happened when Aijaj and his friend Shashidhar who were going on a bike on the Mangalore-Bangalore highway on May 28 night lost control of the vehicle near the coffee board office and hit a telephone pole. A severly injured Shashidhar has been admitted to Crawford Hospital, Sakleshpur, where he is said to be recovering.

Samiti condemns statue desecration:
The karnataka Parishishta Jathi Vargagala Sanghatana Samiti here has condemned the damaging of the Ambedker statue at Bangarpet on May 26. Samiti President Kumar Kaliveer demanded suitable action against the officers concerned who did not ensure proper protection of the statue. Dalit leaders Nadugarahalli Siddhappa, B K Nataraj, Bank Shivanna, Rajesh Layer and others submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner requesting the Government to exterminate the miscreants from the State.

Workshop on honey culture held:
If ruralites take up honey culture they can earn good profit since it is a less investment and sure returns project. DCC Bank President H P Mohan said. Inaugurating a workshop on honey culture at Kandali agriculture science centre near here, he said ryots were not utilising the opportunity though there was enough scope for them to grow. Gavi Gowda, head of the honey culture department at Agriculture University, Bangalore, and Belavadi, Co-Prof, Agriculture Regional Centre of Mudigere, spoke on the occasion. Dr G K Veeresh, former Vice-Chancellor of Agriculture University, Bangalore, presided over the workshop. Doddahanumiah, Head of the Centre, welcomed the gathering and also proposed a vote of thanks.

Action against sale of spurious seeds:
The district administration will take stringent action against those dealers who sell spurious potato seeds to the growers at the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), Deputy Commissioner B P Kaniram said. Speaking to media persons, he said they had conducted a meeting under the chairmanship of the APMC President to discuss this issue. He said drinking water problem was not so serious in the district and also the recent rains had brought some relief. He said Channarayapatna and Belur taluks have received good rains. So far, the district has got 89.9 mm rains in May, he said. Last year in the same period it was 109 mm, he said.

Bag containing Rs 1.5 lakh stolen:
A sum of Rs 1.25 lakh has been reportedly stolen from a car at Holenarasipura. According to the police, one B N Nagarju had left the bag containing the cash in the car while he was away on the Rever Bunk Road. When he returned he found that the bag was missing.

Shivalinga swamy smaranaradhana:
The 115th year Smaranaradhana of Sri Shivalinga swamy was performed at Sri Kshetra Kodi Mutt in Harnahalli village in Arsikere taluk on May 31. The special pooja for the Gadduge started at 6am and Belli Pallakki utsva was held from 11 am, according to a press release issued here.
