Hampi
- the other story
It is important for all the
world to balance economic development with conservation and
traditional use .. sometimes "westerners" forget
this.
I do not.
The site at Hampi is, and should remain, a working temple
site. The Virupaksha temple there is beautiful, and with the
setting around it, any man or woman should feel closer to
his or her god(s). The antiquity of the site, it's
associations with the Ramayana, and the story of the rise
and fall of the great Hindu kingdom of Vijayanagara make
this a world class site. (I speak as one who has travelled
to many such sites across the world, in Greece, Rome, Turkey
& Egypt, and say that Hampi is one of the most wonderful
places I have ever visited).
The problem is unrestricted development, wch in the case of
the proposed bridge, would have led to a destruction of the
intrinsic beauty of this site. More development will also
lead to more tourists, and not all of these tourists will
respect the sacred nature of the site. I have travelled the
world, visited ancient Greek monasteries and the problems
are the same all over the world, people visit as
"tourists" and fail to show any respect for the
people and religion of the country they visit.
These people are in a minority, but they are the ones of
whom Prakash complains - arrogant, rich westerners who see
each place as a "tourist spot" and who treat the
people and culture of the countries they visit with disdain,
believing they are somehow "superior" by virtue of
the fact they live in the "developed world".
I hope that the Hampi site can withstand the number of
people who go there each year without compromising the
beauty of the site. I believe that the ban on alcohol should
be more rigidly enforced, moving the tourists who are bad
for Hampi to an area where the consumption of alcohol is
more appropriate. I also believe that any attempts by
western "travelers" to hold "raves"
there should be firmly dealt with. I enjoy dancing to music,
but to hold such events within the confines of Hampi is
inappropriate and wrong.
Otherwise, if people come to visit with respect and
understanding, and the people of Hampi are happy, nothing
needs to be done at all, other than the conventional
monitoring of those people within the community who are
motivated by profit, rather than the promotion and
understanding of the wisdom of the Hindu civilization known
as the Vijayangara Empire.
thanks for listening
