Version of this Interview
OKC:
How did you enter the world of film music?
GK: When I was studying in Mangalore, I was forced to
sing in a music competition and I got the 4th place
in that competition. Hence began my interest for singing. All
my friends encouraged me to sing. Somehow I learnt to play
keyboard. Today I can play 12
instruments.
OKC:
So you are not from a family with music background. Have you
learnt classical music?
GK: Nobody in my family was inclined towards
music. I
have not learnt classical music either.
OKC: Your first film "A" was a stupendous
hit. The music too was very popular. Was it a dream
debut for you?
GK: Yes it was, Upendra gave me a break, I have worked
with him in 2 films A and Upendra which were super
hits. There are a couple of forthcoming projects with
him.
OKC:Tell us your experiences of working as a music
director in the film industry.
GK: Initially I joined the industry as an actor, then
i started singing. But for me the most
enjoyable job is of music direction. I have a liberty
from composing a tune until the first copy of the
song comes out. As there is a lot of scope for
creativity i can experiment.
OKC:
What are your forthcoming films?
GK:
Dhruva has been released recently. My unreleased films
are Lavvu, Sachi, Hollywood, Dhum and Kariya.
OKC:
Which is your personal favorite song among the
films for which you have composed music?
GK:
There is nothing like personal favorite for me. I listen to my songs two or three times ,i feel
that I could have done it better. There is no limit for
creativity. You always try to do your work differently.
OKC: Is there any music director who inspires
you?
GK: A music director can give a very good song one
day and the next day he may come up with an ordinary song. For
me music is more important than a music director. To name a few of my
favorite music directors
by whom I am inspired ,Shankar jaikishen ,R D Burman
are the best. I also like BappiLahiri and Anumalik as
they created a new trend in music. The best music
director as far as music arrangement and
orchestrisation is concerned, it is A R Rahaman.
OKC:
You have created a record as far as audio cassette sales are
concerned. Is it due to the GuruKiran
brand of music?
GK:
Today I am happy that music sells due to my name. When
I came to Bangalore in 1989 I had made a
music album. I put a lot of effort to do it.
Unfortunatley it did not do well. I did not lose
heart, I challenged the music company that my time will
come and I will be a good music director one day. The
music of my first film "A" earned about Rs50-55
lakhs. Upendra earned crossed a crore of rupees. Today
I have
Thuntata and Appu which have made a very good
business.
OKC:
You started composing music for tv serials, has
that helped you to get into film music?
GK:
At that particular time there was no satellite television. I
had to compose music for tv serials on doordarshan. I tried to experiment on my music which
helped me to learn a lot of things. Ultimately this has
helped me a lot in my career as a music director
today.
OKC:
Today the music industry has undergone a lot of changes. New
technology has replaced the conventional
way of recording music. Has this helped a music
director for creation of better music?
GK:
The new technology has helped us to give new sounds. A
few years back once the recording was done
there was no scope for improvement. Today we can do a
lot of changes until we are satisfied with the song. Today
due to digital technology, the studios are
becoming smaller and cheaper.
OKC:
You are very busy throughout the year don't you
think you give very less time to your family?
GK:
Yes its true that I miss my family a lot. But it
is inevitable, my work schedule is so hectic. Before it
used to be very difficult for my family members .Today
they are very supportive.
OKC:
How did you feel when you became a father for
the first time?
GK:
It was a wonderful feeling. When I got the news i
was composing for Hollywood. It was 5:30 in the
evening. Immediately I left for Mangalore.
OKC:
What is your stand on the trend of writing
songs in kanglish? A lot of kannada organizations have been opposing it.
GK:
Current generation has a huge effect of English
language in their daily lives. It is impossible for me and you to speak
kannada with out using a single word in english. How
many of the present generation can remember an old
kannada song? They may not be able to sing more than a
stanza. The tune of the song will be remembered. Not the
lyrics. We make music accordingly for the present
generation.
OKC:
We hope that you can give us very good music in
the future. We wish you all the best
GK:Thank you
