Click here to read more Cine News (Chitraloka). Mr. Girish Kasaravalli has done it again. His film Haseena has bagged 3 national awards. On behalf of OKC, Mr. Harish Mattur and Mr. Sandeep Shenoy spoke to him about this year’s awards. OKC: Congrats. Your film has won 3 national awards.
Thanks. It’s a proud moment for Kannada film industry. I am elated. After the low phase and testing times the industry had to go through last year, it’s indeed a morale booster to Kannada films. I am also happy because Tara has won the national award for best actress. That is a very big achievement. OKC: Was the competition tough in this year’s awards?
Every year there are films from Malayalam and Bengali, which are very good. Even this year there were some interesting films. We are happy that we could win three awards. OKC: There are allegations that you make films just to win awards.
Every producer makes a film with an intention of making profits out of it. Awards are important, but you cannot ignore the fact that you have to recover the investments made by the producer. If you think that you can recover your money by winning awards you are wrong. If you see the track record of my films all my films have recovered the producers money. That is important to me. 
OKC: Why do you think Kannada films fail to make a mark at the national level?
If you see the History of National Awards, Kannada has done really well. We have won the prestigious Swarnakamal or the best film award 6 times. If we include G. V. Iyer’s two Sanskrit films we have won it 8 times. That is just one less than Malayalam, which has won 9 Swarnakamals. OKC: But you are not able to show your films to the masses?
Yes. Getting a theatre to screen your films is really tough. We cannot afford to pay the exorbitant amount of theatre rent to the Gandhinagar theatres every week. So screening the film for 4 to 5 weeks for a wider audience is really impossible. OKC: Isn’t it strange that your film got an award for best film on family planning?
I was very upset that my film won for family planning. In fact there is nothing about family planning in my film. So it’s very strange. But at the National Awards these things do happen. If you see the best film and best actor categories it has gone to Hindi films. Till 1999 regional films were won most of the awards, but lately due to many reasons Hindi films get a lot of awards. OKC: Are you sending haseena to other international film festivals?
Yes. Now we are entering the panorama section of the India international film festival. OKC: Tell us about the experience of working with Tara.
Tara had already portrayed a Muslim women’s role in P Sheshadri’s MUNNUDI. She has really done well in the role of Haseena. Winning the national award for best actress is indeed a dream come true for her. A Kannada actress is winning it after 31 years. I am very happy for her. OKC: Thank you for speaking to OKC.
