These
days, there is a political strife in our nation on multiple
issues such as Rama Janmabhoomi, Mandal Commission Report,
and Belgaum Border etc. There hardly seems to be any immediate
amicable settlement to any of them. In addition, we have
still the outstanding problem of a common national language.
When
Hindi was proposed as the common language, the Tamil Nadu
state opposed it being the north Indian language and caused
havoc and extensive destruction to national property. If
a south Indian language is proposed, the north Indians will
oppose it. Thus, there is no consensus on the issue of a
common national language.
In
this connection, I would like to state my bitter experience
in communication with other states of our country.
When
I wrote in English to a firm in Calcutta, they wrote to
me back in Bengali.
When I wrote to someone in Gujarat, he replied in Gujarati.
Now,
if I being a Kannadiga write to them or reply to them in
my language Kannada, what will happen?
In a frenzy or regionalism, to the fire of which politicians
add fuel, we do not often realize how much inconvenience
we cause to others who are our brethren and as much Bharatiyas
as we are. How can our country prosper if we reach a nadir
in regionalism and become victims of linguistic inferno?
In
this respect, I feel Sanskrit could overcome the regional
prejudice and linguistic barriers.
Dr.
A. R. Acharya.
