CFTRI Employees' Union
stage protest:
The CFTRI Employees Union and CFTRI Scientific Workers
Association observed protests on Tuesday against the
"anti-workers and pro-capitalist" policies of
the Union Government. They condemned amendments brought to
the existing Labour Laws and Trade Union Act to curtail
workers rights CFTRI Employees Union President, N Suresh
Prasad said the anti labour policies would affect the
economic sovereignty of the country.
Prasad assures to bail
out State tobacco growers:
Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, V Srinivasa Prasad
said the Union and State Governments would find a
permanent solution to resolve the problems of tobacco
growers in the State. Speaking after inaugurating the
State Tobacco Growers convention in Hunasur, he said a
meeting attended by the Chief Minister, Union Ministers
from the State, Agriculture Minister, MPs and others will
be held in May to discuss and take stock of the situation.
Scribes take out
protest rally in City:
Members of the District Journalist Association took out a
rally in protest against the recent attack on working
journalists at Sabaramathi Ashram in Gujarat. The protest
rally, which was taken through the main thoroughfares of
the City, concluded at the Deputy Commissioners office. A
memorandum was submitted the Deputy Commissioner
condemning the attack. Addressing the protestors,
president of the District Journalists Association and
editor Kannada local daily Andolana, Rajashekhar Koti
called upon journalists to unite against all attempts to
stifle freedom of speech and expression.
Amendments strengthen
Constitution:
Primary Education Minister H Vishwanath said amendments,
would only strengthen the Constitution. Speaking at the
111th birth celebrations of Ambedkar organized on Sunday
by the district authorities, Zilla Panchayat and City
Corporation, Vishwanath recalled the Constitutional
amendments brought about in Panchayath Raj by the late
Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and stated that it "has
provided opportunities for various sections in local
governance". He also commended Prime Minister A B
Vajapayee for making primary education a basic right
through Constitutional amendment. Vishwanath sought the
implementation of the recommendations placed by the
Constitutional Review Committees.
Probe into
irregularities:

Nagendra has demanded a high level probe onto the alleged
irregularities by the Special Land Acquisition officer
looking after grievances of those who lost lands during
the construction of Kabini, Noogu and Taraka projects. He
charged that Land acquisition officer Chandre Gowda has
taken anti-farmer decisions which affect the interests of
those who lost land.
4-member gang rob
factory manager:
A four member armed gang robbed the manager and an
employee of a private company after threatening them with
lethal weapons in the early hours of Wednesday in Kadakola.
According to the police, the gang barged into Mysore Toys
factory located near Kadakola Bridge and threatened two
guards. Later, they led the guards to the house of Prasad,
the manager of the unit, and robbed jeweler and other
valuables worth Rs 18,000. The gang later threatened
Prasad and took him to the quarters of another employee,
Mohan. When Mohan opened his door responding to the
mangers call, the gang barged in and decamped with a gold
chain and a sewing machine.
Doctors warn patients
against complaining to Lokayukta:
The Lokayukta team, which raided K R Hospital in the City,
got first hand information on how the illiterate and the
hospital staff exploited the poor. The team was shocked to
know that a patient Javare gowda, who was admitted for
urinary complications, was threatened by a surgeon against
submitting a complaint. Breaking down before the team,
Gowda said surgeon Satyanarayana had threatened to kill
him with "poisonous injections if he dared to file a
complaint". He said he had paid Rs 6,000 as bribe to
the doctor to perform a surgery. However, Satyanarayana
denied these allegations and said that the patient had
some other problems. Complaints poured in against surgeon
Manjunatha, who allegedly collected bribes Manjunatha said
he had paid Rs 100 as bribe to the clerk in Lokayukta
office to forward his file. Irked by this charge,
Lokayukta Venkatachala summoned the clerk and made him
swear that he would not accepted bribes in future.
Teachers urge students
to end their agitation:
The Mysore University post Graduate Teachers Association
has urged students to give up their agitation following
the death and resolve their problems amicably with the
concerned authorities. At an emergency meeting of the
Executive Committee, the Association welcomed the decision
of the University to appoint external valuers for the
Sociology department. The Association urged the University
to make similar arrangement in all departments to avoid
these problems.
Cauvery flows into NR
locality:
The residents of Mysore north locality, who were badly hit
by acute water scarcity, celebrated the supply of Cauvery
water following completion of Rs 32 crore Melapura Water
Supply project on Friday. Though, the project was
commissioned last week by District In-Charge Minister H
Vishwanath, the residents were not sure of Cauvery water
reaching them soon. They were shocked as the Cauvery water
flowed in their homes. The Cauvery water was supplied from
German Press and Devnoor reservoirs to Alanahalli, parts
of Udayagiri, Siddartha Layout, Kyathamaranahalli,
Kalyanagiri and other localities.
