MUDA plans 6500
houses under Kuteera scheme:
The Mysore Urban Development Authority has decided to
launch "Krishna Kuteera", a housing programme
under which 6500 houses would be constructed. Announcing
this at a press conference in Mysore, MUDA Chairman
Sandesh Nagaraj said the novel housing project would mark
the centenary celebrations of the MUDA, started by the
erstwhile Maharajas of Mysore. He said the houses of 20 X
30 ft and other dimensions will be constructed on stray
sites in different parts of the city. He said the MUDA has
planned to avail loans from nationalized banks with a
minimum 10 % interest rate to help the beneficiaries repay
in easy installments.
Christians
approach NHRC against social boycott in Mysore:
The Global Council of Indian Christians complained to the
National Human Rights Commission against the Akhila
Karnataka Handi Jananga Sangha's call for social boycott
of Christian families at Piriyapatna, Mysore. National
convener of Global Council of Indian Christians Sajan K
George said in a petition submitted to NHRC chairperson
Justice J S Verma that all attempts of the Christians for
annulling the boycott call given by the village chief had
failed due to indifference of the police and the district
authorities. "The social boycott call will
far-reaching ramification. It is undemocratic,
unconstitutional and violative of basic human
rights", George said.
Probe Ullahalli
canal scam: BJP unit
The BJP district unit has urged the Water Resource
Minister H K Patil to order a Lokayuktha probe into the
alleged irregularities in modernization of Ullahalli
canal. In an open letter, District BJP president Ranga
Iyengar welcomed the decision by Patil to order a probe
into the irregularities. He said the government rather
than ordering the probe by Star Steel Company, which would
not yield any results, should entrust the task to
Lokayuktha.
AVRC chief sent
to Journalism department:
The Mysore University Syndicate has recalled the services
of N.Usha Rani, who was serving as chief of the
Audio-Video Research Centre and sent her back to the
Journalism and Mass Communication Department. The
Syndicate, chaired by Vice-Chancellor S N Hegde, resolved
to send her back to the parent department following
charges of misappropriation leveled against her by
syndicate member K Mahadev. It may be recalled that
following a complaint filed with the Lokayuktha, a team of
officials had visited AVRC to ascertain the charges
leveled against Usha Rani with regard to the illegal sale
of tapes.
JD (S) pleads
for more funds to combat drought:
The Janata Dal (S) has requested the Union Ministers from
the state to prevail upon Prime Minister Vajpayee to
release sufficient funds for drought relief in the state.
JD (S) state chief Siddaramaiah pointed out that the Union
Government should stop politicizing the issue. Justifying
his claims, he said the neighbouring state of Andhra
Pradesh had "arm-twisted" the Union Government
and secured more funds while Karnataka could not get the
same facilities. The state has sought Rs.900 crores the
previous year but the Center had declined. The Center
should not discriminate and "politics should be kept
off issues related to calamities", he said.
Quiet Dasara
sought:
Siddaramaiah said Dasara celebration should be held on a
low key this time as the state was reeling under drought.
Reacting to District-in-charge Minister H Vishwanath's
plan of celebrating Dasara on a grand scale, he said that
though he was "not against the celebrations, there
was no point in celebrating when the state was reeling
under drought". Referring to Vishwanath's claim that
it should be held on a grand scale to attract foreigners,
he said, "Starving farmers would be no tourist
attraction".
Tribal forum
wants IAS man as cell chief:
The Tribal Welfare Forum, based in Mysore, has urged the
Government to appoint an IAS officer as Director of the
Tribal Directorate and Joint Directors to implement the
Integrated Tribal Development programmes. Tribal Welfare
Forum activists and Jilla Panchayath members said the
Directorate did not have any IAS officers. Opposing the
government's move to appoint an IFS officer for the post
of Tribal Directorate, they demanded the appointment of
IAS officer to work with tribals.

Chandrashekhar warns against splitting J & K:
Former PM Chandrashekhar came down heavily on RSS's demand
for the trifurcation of state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking at a national seminar on "Elections-Code of
conduct" to mark his 75th birthday celebrations
organized by the Federation of Basava Balagas and Veera
Shaiva Organizations in Mysore, he warned that any attempt
in this regard by the Union Government would have serious
repercussion on the North-Eastern states and unity of the
nation. He said he would continue to oppose the two-nation
theory, which went against the unity of the nation. He
said India was not just Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states or
the Uttar Bharath.

Hospital will expand medical services: Math Seer
Adichunchanagiri Math Seer Sri. Balagangadharanatha
Swamiji has planned to start department of nephrology with
dialysis unit, neurology and neurosurgery,
gastroenterology and hepatology to mark the first
anniversary of the BGS Apollo Hospital. Speaking to media
persons here at Mysore the Seer said these additions will
boost the existing health care infrastructure in the
region and go long way in providing better care and
enhanced services to the patients.
Hegde charged
with scuttling third front:
Former chief minister Ramakrishna Hegde's outburst against
JD (S) president H D Deve Gowda was aimed at scuttling the
chances of a Third Front taking shape at the national
level, said JD (S) leader G T Deve Gowda. The Karnataka
Co-operative Federation Chairman and former MLA told media
persons in Mysore that he had called on Hegde to persuade
the latter no to defame Deve Gowda in public. In a veiled
attack, he said Hegde who can not claim to have followed
value-based politics was making charges against Deve
Gowda, which would bring disrepute "to a senior
leader like Hegde".
