Dalits' show strength
and anger at statue desecration:
Members of various Dalit organizations in Mysore took out
a rally on Friday through the City condemning the recent
desecration of Ambedkar statue in Hassan. Activists, who
took out a silent march through the City streets, sought
action against the Deputy Commissioner at whose office
premises the desecration was carried out. Protestors
highlighted the atrocities meted out to Dalits, the weaker
section and women. They sought the immediate arrest of
those responsible for the act. Protestors also demanded
the seizure of properties of those who were perpetrators
of the crime and wanted them expelled from Hassan. They
also demanded action against those who committed
atrocities against a Dalit woman in Doddaballapura.
Terming the act as a "heinous crime", the
protestors wanted the accused to be booked under the
Goonda Act.
Freedom fighters take
out rally:
Freedom fighters, students and political activists
observed "Quit India" Day by taking out a
procession through the streets of Mysore on Friday. Mysore
District Freedom Fighters Association president C. A.
Shstry inaugurated the celebration by hoisting the
national flag at Subbarayanakere premises. School
children, Seva Dal activists and freedom fighters took out
a march through the main streets before assembling for a
public meeting. Janata Dal (U) leader Vedanta Hemmige
addressed the gathering.
National Flag in
plastic an insult to the nation:
The Youth Effort for Society (YES) organization would
stage a protest against using national flag made of
plastic or paper. Schools which are making it compulsory
for the students to get the plastic or paper flags will be
held responsible for the insult to the national honour.
The students without knowing the value of the national
flag buy it and later throw it on the streets. These flags
could be found in dustbins, which is a gross dishonor to
the national flag. The forum has also requested
two-wheeler riders not to use plastic or paper flags.
Delay in exam results:
"Student at fault": Mysore University Vice
Chancellor S N Hegde said students were responsible for
the delay in the announcement of results. Speaking at a
student leaders' meet here on Thursday, he said failure on
the part of students to write their register number
properly was one of the reasons for the delay in
announcing results. The registrar on Wednesday said the
lapses during coding and decoding was the reason for the
delay.
Manipal finance
depositors to seek Pejawar Seer's help:
Depositors of the Manipal Group would seek the help of
Pejawar Math Seer to prevail upon the management to settle
their dues. Speaking to media persons here on Thursday,
the depositors' forum pointed out that the Union
Government's economic policies was the cause for the
collapse of non-banking financial institutions. Bhaskar,
of the organization said direct investment from
multi-national companies and steep reduction in the
interest rates on lending has caused the financial
collapse. The forum would hold a meeting on August 11 in
Mysore to deliberate on the future course of action.
Experts in the financial sector would address the meeting,
they stated. Around 3,500 depositors have invested in the
financial institution to the tune of Rs 8.5 crore and the
over all investment in the State was Rs 330 crore.
ABVP stir against
corrupt practices in University:
Students of various colleges in the City took out a rally
and staged a dharna in front of the Crawford Hall on
Wednesday to protest against the indifferent attitude of
the varsity. The students, led by ABVP, protested against
the lapses on the part of the University and alleged that
corrupt practices had paralyzed the administration.
Tension prevailed for sometime when students exchanged
words with the Registrar (Evaluation) Shantaraj. However,
the police intervened and defused the tension.
DSS threatens stir
against Govt circular:
The Dalit Sangharsha Samithi (DSS) has sought a public
apology from Chief Minister S M Krishna and Home Minister
Mallikarjuna Kharge for listing DSS as a terrorist outfit.
The forum has threatened to launch a stir till the
Ministers tender an apology, said DSS leader Bettiah Kote.
Speaking to media persons, he condemned the Government for
equating "DSS with LTTE and JKLF". Dalits in the
state would observe a hunger strike on Aug 15. They also
termed that DSS would be active until the State Government
puts an end to atrocities against women and the weaker
section.
City zoo gets
colourful pheasants:
The Mysore Zoo has acquired a pair of Kallej Pheasant,
which is listed in the Red Book as endangered species. The
colourful birds were flown from Pipli Zoo in Haryana in
exchange for a female Papio Hamadryas baboon. The baboon
was exchanged as it was found in large numbers at the
Mysore zoo and the Central Zoo Authority approved the
exchange deal. According to Kumar Pushkar, the Executive
director of Mysore zoo, these birds were found only in the
dense forests of Himalayas. The birds were released to
enclosures.
KRS level touches rock
bottom, ryots asked to give up plans for new crops:
Even as farmers in the Cauvery command area making initial
preparations hoping for late rains and increase in water
level in the Krishna Raja Sagar reservoir, the Command
Area Development authority (CADA) has decided not to
release water into the Vishweshvariah Canal. Apart from
announcing that they would not release water into the VC
canal, covering command areas in Mysore and Mandya
districts, the Irrigation authorities have decided to stop
the release of water to standing crops like sugarcane
spread over 85,000 acres. KRS Superintendent Engineer SK
Krishna has appealed to farmers in VC canal achukat area
to temporarily give up their plans to go for new crops
till further orders were received from the Irrigation
Department.
Programmes against
"Jehad" planned by Bajaranga Dal:
The Bajaranga Dal has announced a month-long has announced
a month-long statewide awareness programme against "Jehad"
promoted by Islamic organizations. Speaking to media
persons here on Tuesday, Bajaranga Dal national organizing
secretary Miling Parande said the programme would expose
people to the nefarious activities of these organizations.
The secretary came down heavily on Christian missionaries
for espousing "religious conversion as their
goal". Parande further pointed out that Eastern
States were target for conversions. Christian missionaries
were involved in conversion. This has resulted in Nagaland,
Mizoram having Hindus as minorities, he said. He termed
Madrasas as places where anti-national sentiments were
invoked through preaching. He said the Bajaranga Dal would
take up the awareness programme to expose "Jehad, as
espoused by Islamic organizations".
Land scam: Chief
Minister urged to withdraw denotification orders:
Congress leader M C Chikkanna has urged Chief Minister S M
Krishna to withdraw denotification orders to unearth land
scams. Welcoming the State's decision of withdrawing
denotification order on a valuable stretch of 18 acres, he
said lands were left out from land acquisition. He said
the erstwhile Maharajas of Mysore had started City
Improvement Trust board for the overall development of
Mysore City, which helped Mysore become one of the
prominent cities in the country.

JD (S) threatens stir against Mayor:
The city Janata Dal (S0 has threatened to stage a dharana
in front of Mysore City Corporation if Mayor T B Chikkanna
fails to hold elections for the standing committee chief
posts. Speaking to media persons here on Sunday, party
leader and former Mayor Narayana charged the ruling party
members with putting off the polls, which were not held
for the standing panels since April 19. He said the
administrative machinery has totally failed in the City
Corporation as no works could be taken up without the
approval of the standing committees.
Revive medical corpus
fund- Gowda:
Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda said it was
impossible to improve standards and service in the
Government hospital. Speaking at the inauguration of the
first anniversary of BGS Apollo Hospital here on Sunday.
He said there were many problems faced by the Government
compared to private hospitals. He said the Government
couldn't improve the standards of its hospital due to
financial constraints, pressures from vested interests and
for various other reasons. He said private hospitals and
hi-tech hospitals have proved that they have a better
opportunity to serve the people. Gowda observed that
social justice had to be compromised to maintain
efficiency and merit.
Ullahalli canal:
Action against engineers sought:
BJP MLC G. Madhusudhan has urged Irrigation Minster H K
Patil to take action against those responsible for the
alleged irregularities in modernization of Ullahalli
canal. Speaking to media persons here on Sunday, he said
he has sent a video footage on the alleged substandard
work in the modernization of Ullahalli canal apart from a
detailed letter to the Irrigation Minister. Madhusudhan
said he would submit a copy of the video footage to
Legislative Council Chairman B L Shankar seeking action
against those responsible for substandard work.
