    1. Kareem demands security for witnesses:

    In a letter to IG and DGP Dinakar, former DSP Abdul Kareem charged police authorities of having neglected cases against Veerappan and failure in providing security to witnesses. He said the PSI of Ramapura police station Rachiah has turned hostile in the case and charged that Rachiah is under pressure from the pro-Veerappan lobby. He requested Dinakar to take severe action against Rachiah and order a CBI inquiry into the entire episode.

    2. Jayalalitha seeks divine help before polls:

    Former TN CM and AIADMK supreme J. Jayalalitha performed pooja at Chamundeshwari temple, atop Chamundi Hills on Sunday. Jayalalitha, accompanied by her confidant, Sasikala, arrived at the temple premises under police cover and offered pooja to the local deity for more than 40 minutes.

    3. Open University convocation on March 3:

    Around 6168 candidates will receive degrees in the first convocation of the Karnataka State Open University, which will be held on March 3, 2001. Governor and Chancellor V.S. Ramadevi will preside over the convocation. High Court, Chief Justice P.V. Reddy will be the chief guest and deliver the convocation address. Karnataka State Open University, established in 1996, was carved from the Mysore University.

    4. Pourakarmikas plan strike from February 20:

    The Mysore Nagara Palike Pourakarmikara Sangha has planed to go on an indefinite strike from February 20 to urge the Government to meet its demands. Secretary Pedanna said sangha members would stop all on-going cleaning activities in the city. He demanded that the corporation stop recruitment on contract and urged them to regularize temporary employees working in the corporation. He said the corporation should give out title deeds and kathas to Pourakarmika families in corporation pourakarmika quarters. He also asked to extend leave and construct 300 houses and community halls in all pourakarmika colonies.

    5. Milk Federations plan nation-wide stir:

    The National Dairy Development Board covering all the 176 Milk Federations in the country will launch a nation-wide stir to urge the Union Government to extricate dairy farming from the WTO. C. S. Gurumallappa said the import of foreign products would have severe implication on the domestic markets and would lead to a crash in prices of all agricultural products.

    6. Private college teaching and non-teaching staff boycott classes:

    The teaching and non-teaching staff of private colleges boycotted classes and observed a bandh to protest against the State Government's decision to cut 15% in salary grants. The bandh call was announced by State Federation of University Private College teachers Association against slash in salary grants.

    7. Platinum Jubilee concluded:

    "Swamy Vivekananda's call for selfless service is reflected in the activities of Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama in Mysore", said Swamy Atmasthanandaji vice president of Ramakrishna math and mission. Speaking at the concluding celebrations of platinum jubilee of the ashrama on Friday, he said, "Swamy Vivekananda during his visit to Mysore, mixed with king and common man alike and predicted that Mysore will be a fertile land for spirituality".

    8. Race club contributes Rs 5 lakh:

    Mysore Race Club Limited has contributed Rs 5 lakh to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund towards the Gujarat earthquake relief.

    9. 'Improve K.R. Hospital'-G. Madhusudan:

    BJP MLC G. Madhusudan urged the Health Minister A.B. Maalaka Reddy to start a HIV screening center at K.R. Hospital. He said the number of patients suffering from AIDS was increasing in and around Mysore. Lack of a HIV screening center at K.R. Hospital is forcing people to pay exorbitant fees at private laboratories.

    10. Krishna to distribute 6000 sites:

    C.M. S. M. Krishna will distribute 6000 sites at Sathagalli and Rajiv Nagar Layout developed with the assistance of Asian Development Bank and Mysore Urban Development Authority.
