Higher
Education Minister calls for teachers' cooperation:
Higher Education Minister G. Parameshwar called upon teachers
to set aside their apprehensions about the Government's
decision to bifurcate pre-university colleges from degree
colleges. He said salaries, dearness-allowance and promotion
benefits for all teachers would be protected. He also
said the government was not taking policy decisions without
thinking first. How can the Government take decisions
if teachers fail to cooperate, he asked.
Kodavas'
plea to Moily:
The Coorg National Council (CNC) demanded that former
Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily recommend the inclusion
of Kodava in the 8th schedule of the constitution. The
secretary of CNC Mr. Nachappa said, "The community's aspirations
will be fulfilled if the language is given constitutional
status".
Rebel
BJP MLA supports Congress:
Rebel BJP MLA Bharathi Shankar's T Narasipura Abhivrudhi
Sangha has entered into an alliance with the Congress
to contest the town panchayat election to be held on July
8. Bharathi Shankar said he has sought 6 of the 11 seats.
A final decision will be taken on seat sharing after holding
talks with the CM and local leaders.
Photographers'
association stages protest:
The Mysore District Photographers' and Videographers'
Association observed a peaceful bandh urging the Union
Government to withdraw the service tax of 5%. They said
the Government should withdraw the service tax announced
in the current union budget, as sales tax already exists.
City
lawyers boycott Court:
Members of the Mysore Bar Association boycotted Court
protesting against the pilot project scheme that mandates
cases filed on or before March 31 to be disposed of on
or before March 31, 2003. The association has decided
to approach the CJ of Karnataka requesting the immediate
withdrawal of the pilot project. The association also
threatened to boycott Court if their plea was not considered
in a week. They felt that any attempts to cut-short evidence
and arguments would result in striking at the foundation
of the system.

K. Prakash is Mysore Mayor:
Congress candidates have been elected as City mayor and
Deputy Mayor in the Mysore City Corporation polls. With
the JD (S) staying neutral and the BJP and independents
boycotting the proceedings, the Congress emerged the winners.
B. K. Prakash (ward no. 44), son of former MLA Kenge Gowda,
was elected Mayor while R. Pushpavalli (Ward no. 26) was
elected Deputy Mayor with the backing of 28 members-23
corporators, three associate members, an MLA and an MP.
The election was held amid noisy protests from the BJP,
who were upset over JD (S) change in stand.
