Higher Education Minister calls for teachers' cooperation:
Higher Education Minister G. Parameshwar called upon teachers to set aside their apprehensions about the Government's decision to bifurcate pre-university colleges from degree colleges. He said salaries, dearness-allowance and promotion benefits for all teachers would be protected. He also said the government was not taking policy decisions without thinking first. How can the Government take decisions if teachers fail to cooperate, he asked.

    Kodavas' plea to Moily:
The Coorg National Council (CNC) demanded that former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily recommend the inclusion of Kodava in the 8th schedule of the constitution. The secretary of CNC Mr. Nachappa said, "The community's aspirations will be fulfilled if the language is given constitutional status".

    Rebel BJP MLA supports Congress:
Rebel BJP MLA Bharathi Shankar's T Narasipura Abhivrudhi Sangha has entered into an alliance with the Congress to contest the town panchayat election to be held on July 8. Bharathi Shankar said he has sought 6 of the 11 seats. A final decision will be taken on seat sharing after holding talks with the CM and local leaders.

    Photographers' association stages protest:
The Mysore District Photographers' and Videographers' Association observed a peaceful bandh urging the Union Government to withdraw the service tax of 5%. They said the Government should withdraw the service tax announced in the current union budget, as sales tax already exists.

    City lawyers boycott Court:
Members of the Mysore Bar Association boycotted Court protesting against the pilot project scheme that mandates cases filed on or before March 31 to be disposed of on or before March 31, 2003. The association has decided to approach the CJ of Karnataka requesting the immediate withdrawal of the pilot project. The association also threatened to boycott Court if their plea was not considered in a week. They felt that any attempts to cut-short evidence and arguments would result in striking at the foundation of the system.

    B. K. Prakash is Mysore Mayor:
Congress candidates have been elected as City mayor and Deputy Mayor in the Mysore City Corporation polls. With the JD (S) staying neutral and the BJP and independents boycotting the proceedings, the Congress emerged the winners. B. K. Prakash (ward no. 44), son of former MLA Kenge Gowda, was elected Mayor while R. Pushpavalli (Ward no. 26) was elected Deputy Mayor with the backing of 28 members-23 corporators, three associate members, an MLA and an MP. The election was held amid noisy protests from the BJP, who were upset over JD (S) change in stand.
