University approves
new PG courses:
The Academic Council of the University of Mysore has
approved M.Sc., course in electronics and media apart from
establishing a University School of Designs. At a meeting
held here recently, members approved the proposal to start
a post-graduate course in M.Sc electronics and media at
the Audio Visual research Centre in Manasagangothri
premises. They also approved to adopt the present M.Tech
(computer science and technology), MS and M.Tech (computer
cognition technology) on the guidelines and regulations of
the All India Technical Education.
Cauvery water: Jaya's
demand 'mischievous', says KRRS chief:
The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) has termed Tamil
Nadu's demand to release Cauvery water from Karnataka as
"mischievous". Speaking to media persons here on
Monday, KRRS chief K S Puttaniah said Tamil Nadu Chief
Minister J Jayalalitha was well aware "of the
helpless situation of the State". The inflow into the
Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir has come down to 900 cusecs
with the storage level at 80.88 ft. the direction by the
Prime Minister seeking release of water was also
"customary". The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has
demanded water with a political motive and there was no
reason to be worried, he said.
Misuse of tribal
welfare schemes, Dalit Samithi demands probe:
The Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samithi (DSS) has urged the
Government to order a high level probe into tribal welfare
schemes being "misused" by non-tribals in Hunsur
taluk. DSS State Organizing Convenor Hariharananda Swamy
told media persons here on Monday that many of the names
of Jenu Kuruba tribals included in the title deed list has
been created by vested interests to misuse Government
welfare programmes. He pointed out that DSS activists had
called off their 15-day dharna following an assurance by
revenue officials to look into the irregularities in the
beneficiaries list in "Dasanapura village on Survey
No 12 and No. 13.
Drive against drunken
driving in City:
The City police have launched a drive against drunken
driving and over speeding by motorists by introducing
detection gadgets at strategic points. Demonstrating the
equipment here on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police C
Chandrashekhar said there was an increase in accidents
related to over speeding. Traffic policemen have booked
around 671 cases till June 30 in the City. Police have
launched a drive to check the violators of traffic rules.
Referring to fatal accidents in the City, Chandrashekar
said drunken driving and over speeding has resulted in
eight deaths till June 2002. He said traffic policemen
would be equipped with three radar guns to check over
speeding and three breath analysers to help traffic
policemen book cases against drunken driving.
Vikrant staffs condole
Suri's demise:
Employees of the Vikrant Tyres' Company have condoled the
death of Trade Union leader and Director of Vikrant Tyres
K Suryanarayana Rao. Employees assembled in front of their
administrative office at 10 am on Tuesday and condoled the
sudden demise of K Suryanarayana Rao, All India Vice
President of CITU and State President of CITU.
Suryanarayana Rao, popularly known as Comrade Suri among
the employees had led the Vikrant employees' agitation to
save the industry. He had worked to protect the interests
of the working class by forcing an agreement with the
management. Vikrant Tyres President and Director A K
Bajoria participated in the condolence meeting and paid
homage to the departed Trade Union leader.
Industries in the red,
Deshpande suggests remedy:
'State plans to introduce deregulation bill':
The State government will introduce the Industrial
Deregulation Bill to help check 'red tapism' which is
cited to be the impediment for industrial growth. Speaking
at an interactive meet with industrialists and people's
representatives here on Wednesday, Industries Minister R V
Deshpande said the Bill would go a long way in helping
industries. He said the Industrial Township Bill would
also be introduced to empower industrialist in managing
industrial townships by themselves. Reacting to queries
from Mysore industrialists seeking basic infrastructure,
he said these Bills once passed would help in solving
various grievances faced by entrepreneurs and
industrialists.
Manipal depositors
return home disappointed:
Depositors of the Manipal Finance Corporation who
approached the office following assurances from the
company to discuss their grievances returned home
disappointed on Wednesday. It may by recalled that the
agitated depositors had mobbed the office on Tuesday only
to be assured by the authorities that their grievances
would be redressed by the company chiefs on Wednesday.
However, when a group of depositors approached the office
they found the doors locked with a 'notice' stuck to the
door claiming that the company was at present unable to
repay due to lack of liquid fund. The company, according
to the notice, claimed that it would however, meet its
commitment.
BEML rolls out Tatra
4x4 for Army:
The Bharat Earth Movers Limited, Mysore Complex, rolled
out the new Tatra 4x4 high mobility all terrain vehicle to
be deployed at the frontline by the Indian Army. According
to Chairman and Managing Director Of BEML, K Aprameyan,
the vehicle could by used for cross-country operations in
difficult terrains near the borders. The Mysore Complex
will roll out 300 such vehicles by March 2003. The Mysore
Complex has already supplied the earlier version of 8x8
Tatra vehicles to the Army, he said.
Govt invests Rs 700
Cr. on roads:
Public Works Minister Dharm Singh has said that the State
Government would develop all prominent roads in all the
districts at a cost of Rs 700 crore by next year. Speaking
after inaugurating road works in H D Kote taluk here, he
said around 28,000 km of roads in each district would be
developed by the State Road Development Authority. He said
10,880 km of the 41,000 km of roads were under the State
highway limits and announced that the Government would
develop 4,000 km of State highways.
Legislators prepare
for session, hear public grievances:
BJP legislators convened an interactive meeting with
leaders of various sectors spanning from industries to
theatre owners, as part of a pre-Assembly session
exercise. Ramadas, BJP legislator from the City, who
convened the meeting, promised to raise the grievances
heard at the meeting in the State Assembly. Though the
Major Industries Minister had conducted a similar
interactive meeting with industries, the small-scale
sector felt left out. Suresh Kumar Jain, Hebbal Industrial
area pointed out that the State Government had taken a
soft stand towards major Indus tries and were
"penalizing SSIs".
