A new "Train" to replace cleft lip of children with smiles:
New York based Smile Train Organization has tied up with the JSS hospital to provide free surgical care for poor children with facial defects like "cleft lip". The organization would foot the bill of each operation carried out on poor patients while the JSS hospital would extend its expertise in the field, according to JSS Mahavidyapeeta secretary Betkerur. Smile Train Organization and JSS has so far conducted 40 free surgeries. Any child from anywhere in the world can make use of the benefit and "there are 10 lakh such children waiting to undergo the surgery in the country".

Cong rebels spoil City Corporation panel polls:
The Congress party, which witnessed rebel activities during standing committee polls in the Zilla Panchayat, witnessed the same in Mysore City Corporation. Mayor T B Chikanna was forced to postpone elections to two standing committees. At a meeting held here the Janata Dal leaders criticized the Mayor for delaying the meeting and alleged that the meeting was delayed following a split among the Congress members. The rebellion in the Congress party came to fore when senior Congress corporator M C Chikkanna filed papers for the Finance Committee while the party had fielded C M Mahadevamma, Najimuddin, Dhakshamurthy, Uma Maniraju, K Suresh Babu (JD) and M G Mahesh (BJP).

Sugar Minister charged with irregularities:
District BJP president B S Ranga Iyengar has charged Sugar Minister M Mahadev and T Narasipur Legislator Bharthi Shankar of colluding with racketeers in siphoning off funds allocated for irrigation projects. Speaking to media persons here, the district BJP president said renovation work on Hullahalli Canal has turned out to be a major scam. Iyengar said the Asian Development Bank funded Rs 28 crore renovation project has witnessed substandard work by contractors, who were awarded piece work.

Statue desecration: Action sought:
City based Dalit organization Nayaka Sangha and Janata Dal activists staged dharnas in different places of the City protesting against the desecration of Ambedkar statue in Koppal district. Janata Dal activists, led by former Mayor Narayana and corporator H S Ravindranath, staged Rasta roko near Silk Factory Circle demanding immediate action against the culprits. Narayana said desecration of any statue should be condemned and demanded action against Koppal district Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police. Corporator Prabhu Murthy, JD (S) leaders P Raju, Sundhar, N Mahesh, former corporator Somashekar and others participated in the dharna. The Ashokapurm Dalit Organization led by KPCC SC/ST Secretary N Bhaskar staged a Rasta roko near Ashoka Circle demanding action against those accused in the desecration.

Kukkarahalli Lake to be rejuvenated:
The Mysore University and Mysore City Corporation have chalked out an action plan to rejuvenate the Kukkarahalli Lake, which has been polluted in recent times. The Corporation would start excavation work to dig out trenches to divert sewage water from flowing onto the lake. The team comprising of Mayor T B Chikkanna, Rangayana Director Prasanna, Mysore University Registrar N D Tiwary, and Kukkarahalli Lake Protection Committee chief inspected the lake.

Secondary cities should be projected: STPI chief:
Secondary cities like Mysore should be provided the necessary infrastructure and technical expertise to help the center face the competition in the IT sector, said STPI Karnataka Director, BV Naidu. Inaugurating the Mysore IT.com here on Friday, Naidu said with the global slowdown affecting major industries, secondary cities should concentrate on small and medium scale sectors. The present requirement in the IT sector is not for highly skilled work-force but for special facilities like call centers which would be better placed in Mysore due to the availability of cheap labour.

Delay in panel polls flayed:
Former Mayor and JD (S) corporator Narayana criticized Mayor T B Chikkanna for postponing elections to standing committees without valid reasons. He said the elections to standing committees should be held on the day of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor's election. It is unfortunate that the Mayor has violated Section 55 of the Karnataka Municipality Act by abruptly adjourning the meeting.

Disabled: income no bar to avail benefits:
Women and Child Welfare Minister Motamma said the Government has removed income limit to help physically disabled persons to avail welfare programmes of the government. Speaking after inaugurating the Helen Keller Government training Centre for Teachers of Visually Handicapped in Government Blind School premises here on Saturday, she said physically disabled persons with authorized identity card issued by the State Government could avail the facilities. "Disabled, irrespective of their financial background, can avail the facilities including financial assistance from the National Physically Handicapped Financial Development Corporation," she said.

Kabini lift irrigation project: 'Gundlpet must benefit':
The proposed Kabini II stage lift irrigation project should be expanded to Gundlpet to help irrigate around 15,000 acres, said legislator H S Mahadev Prasad. Speaking to media persons here on Saturday, he said Gundlpet taluk would have only 500 acres to irrigate if it was left out in the second stage of Kabini project. The proposed project has a target irrigate 1.3 lakh acres in Chamarajanagar while only 500 acres "would benefit in Gundlpet", he said. Prasad wanted Koogalur lift irrigation project to be clubbed with the Kabini second stage project to irrigate around 15,000 acres in the taluk.

No vaccine for gastro, but new strains abounds: Expert:
Gastroenteritis, which does not have an effective vaccine, is a serious cause for concern with novel virus strain emerging in Indian which could be related to the lifestyle of the populace, said Durga Rao of Indian Institute of Science. Speaking at a seminar at Central Food Technological Research Institute here on Tuesday, Durga Rao said around eight lakh people die every year due to acute diarrhea. Rao said widespread use of cattle waste in rural areas has resulted in the bovine strain of the virus entering human beings. Their reverse was also witnessed with "bovine virus having human strains". He pointed out that 5 per cent of the samples tested from Mysore had a strain belonging to a horse.

PUCL condemns attack on activist:
Members peoples Union For Civil Liberties (PUCL), Karnataka Chapter, have condemned the attack on P B D'sa, a PUCL activist from Mangalore recently. V Lakshminarayana, general secretary of PUCL, Karnataka said the attack on D'sa was intended to eliminate D'sa who was in the forefront of civil liberties movement. The attempt is a desperate bid to stop civil liberties movement in Dakshina Kannada, he said. He recalled that a progressive students' union activist was murdered and the police have failed to arrest the culprits. The PUCL has called upon all the progressive forces to raise their voices to protest the attack. It has also called upon the Government to arrest the accused.

Scholarship funds misused by teacher:
Activists of the B R Ambedkar Yuvakara Sangha, Rajkumar Kannada Yuvasena and ABVP staged dharnas in different parts of the City. Members of the Ambedkar Yuvakara Sangha staged a dharna in front of the Zilla Panchayath office demanding action against Government Higher Primary School Head Master Sudguru Murthy for misusing scholarship funds. They charged that the teacher has misused the scholarship funds of 150 students. Meanwhile, ZP Chief Executive Officer T K Anil Kumar said the Government would take legal action against the teacher.

Prasad unhappy over Presidential candidate choice:
Union Minister V Srinivasa Prasad has said that the ruling NDA and Opposition have failed to discuss at length before selecting the Presidential candidate. He was speaking after inaugurating a seminar on "Presidential election" organized by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Centenary celebration committee. "Political parties, including BJP, NDA allies, Congress and People's Front constituents should have discussed extensively before deciding a consensus candidate," he said. He said he has also expressed his displeasure at Samata Party Parliamentary Board meeting for not discussing the efficiency level of the presidential candidate.

Mysore police treat Srinath shabbily:
Mysore police was left red-faced with embarrassment after an officer of the department shabbily treated International cricketer Javagal Srinath. According to sources close to the cricketer, Srinath had visited the Kuvempunagar police station to file a report about the loss of his vehicle's registration certificate. But instead of registering the report, station Inspector Rajendra Prasad allegedly ill-treated Srinath, refusing to offer him even a seat. Moreover, the ace pace bowler was asked to produce a certificate from a notary. "This certificate is not mandatory for filing a report about a missing document", ACP S D Ramakrishna later told this newspaper. When Srinath tried to persuade Prasad about his bonafides the officer shot back by saying he was not bothered about how busy the cricketer was and asserted that nothing less than a certificate would do. When Srinath took his leave, the subordinates at the police station rushed up to him, pleading with him to hush up the matter. Later these police personnel registered the report about the missing document.

Srinath flays down Mysore episode:
The unsavory incident in which cricket star Srinath was meted out a shabby treatment at a police station here had the officials on their toes to apologise for the same. Srinath who had been a police station to file a complaint was treated shabbily by the station officer, it was reported. ACP Ramakrishna who was assigned the job of making amends failed to meet the ace fast bowler till late Monday afternoon. Later, Srinath, who is said to have contacted Ramakrishna, sought the issue to be played down. Srinath, however, did not file any complaint against the police official concerned and wanted the row to be ended. But he refused to deny the incident. In fact, he refused to comment on the episode.

Center asked to depute team on Cauvery:
Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president K S Puttannaiah flayed the Tamil Nadu Government for demanding release of cauvery water and urged the Union Government to depute a team to study the prevailing situation in the state. Speaking to media persons, he urged the State Government to document the existing drought-like situation in the Cauvery delta and other places through videos. He said it was ridiculous on part of TN and Union Governments to seek release of water from Karnataka when there was no water in KRS, Hemavathi and Kabini reservoirs.
