demands quota in return for votes:

Gopal has appealed to Chief Minister S M Krishna to give
due prominence to the Savitha Samaj community while
nominating members to the Vidhana Parishat, Boards and
Corporation. Venu Gopal, who is also the president of the
State Savitha Samaj, has requested the Government to
nominate members of the Savitha Samaja to the Mysore City
Corporation and municipalities in Mysore district.
"India ready to
strike"- Ananth Kumar:
The country is prepared to face any attack from Pakistan
with the Cabinet Committee on security monitoring the
situation constantly, said Union Minister Ananth Kumar.
The Minister told media persons that the committee
"would decide on the appropriate time to initiate
action". He said the situation at the border was
tense and war clouds were gathering. Asked whether the
country was anitcipating a full-fledged war, he said,
"All wars are thrust on us". Pakistan has
suffered defeat twice and should do a rethinking this
time.
CM promises BCs seat
in State Council:
Chief Minister S M Krishna has said that the Congress
Government would give representation to backward castes in
nominations to the Legislative Council and corporations.
Speaking after inaugurating the Mysore District Backward
Classes Conference here at Mysore, he said that the
Congress Government had made efforts to accommodate
representatives from backward castes. He said that the
Congress belives in social justice and would see that
Government programmes reached the neglected sections. He
said that although many political parties maintained that
they were against caste politics, almost all parties
worked on caste lines.
Krishna promises to
implement new pro-poor programmes:
The Congress has taken the bypoll to Narasimharaja
constituency seriously although it may not make any
serious impact on State politics, said Chief Minister S M
Krishna. Addressing a public meeting here on Tuesday,
Krishna said the reason why such a lot of Minister were
campaigning in the constituency was "because Congress
is a big party with a history". Promising to work for
the welfare of the poor, he said that the Government would
meet all the promises made during elections.
Academic Council makes
semester system optional in colleges:
The Mysore University Academic Council has decided to
introduce the semester system as an optional in those
colleges, which have the suitable infrastructure. At a
meeting held here on Thursday, the member held a detailed
discussion on the matter. The Academic Council members
have decided to make the semester system compulsorey from
the next academic year. They have however, given an
option. Students are eligible to opt for both annual and
semester systems in the University colleges.
CM not nervous of
bypoll verdict- KPCC Chief:
KPCC President Allum Veerabadrappa reiterated that the
Narasimharaja constituncy by-election results would have
no impact on Krishna's leadership or on the party. He said
the Krishna Government would complete its full term in
office. Veerabhadrappa denied that a few leaders were
opposing Krishna's leadership and clarified that there
were "no dissidents in the party". He said the
Government was committed to carrying out development work
in all constituencies in the next two years as the next
general elections were approaching.
BJP, JD misleading
people on State's achievements- Cong:
Iinformation Minister B K Chandrashekar lashed out at the
BJP and Janata Dal leaders for misleading the public by
making irresponsible statements on the State's financial
status. He told mediapersons here that it was unfortunate
that politicians were making generalised statements
without verifying facts. He was indirectly referring to
Union Minister Anantha Kumar's statement that the State
Government had neglected the development of infrastructure
in the State.
Maruthi Rao Pawar's
defection, an act of repentance- Siddaramiah:
The Janata Parivar launched its campaign in Narasimharaja
Assembly segment with party chief H D Deve Gowda leading a
"padayatra" through the bylanes. Gowda,
accompanied by party leaders, launched a scathing attack
on Chief Minister S M Krishna who played down the
importance of the bypolls during his visit to the
constituency. Referring to Krishna's remark that the
bypoll would not have any impact either on the State or
Central Governments, Gowda said, "Why then is the
State Cabinet camping in NR constituency".
