CIST to start diploma
in agriculture information:
The Centre for Information Science and Technology (CIST)
has plans to introduce post-graduate diploma in
Agriculture Information systems from December. CIST
director Balasubramanyam told media persons here on
Saturday that the diploma course in agriculture would
train students to collect information and disseminate the
same to farmers. He said the Government departments,
including Horticulture, Survey of India and others have
requested the Institute to start computer courses.
Delayed rainfall
worries farmers in Mysore:
Farmers in Mysore district seem to be heading towards
another crisis following delayed and insufficient rains
recorded till May 31. The Joint Director of Agriculture K
R Krishniah has stated that the situation is grave.
However, compared to other districts, Mysore seems to be
slightly better off. Delayed rains have resulted in
farmers failing to sow dry crops. The department has
advised the farming community to take up cultivation of
ragi and sunflower.
Dalit Christians
asked to promote education:
Chairman of the Karnataka Dalit Christian Federation S. D.
Joseph said it was high time Dalit Christians gave
importance to education. Addressing the office bearers of
the Christian Federation here, he said Dalits,
particularly educated Dalits, should work for the uplift
of their fellowmen. Priest Franklin Prabhu said Dalit
Christians should raise their voice against injustice. He
said social justice and political representation would
become a distant dream if Dalit Christians failed to work
unitedly. DSS State Organizing Convenor Hariharananda
Swamy said, "Change in religious belief would not
change the socio-economic status of Dalits".
Finance company
asked to pay up:
The Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed Alpic
Finance Company to pay Krishnaswamy Rs 52,210 against the
bond the complainant had purchased with future interest at
a rate of 12 per cent. The Forum has further ordered the
finance company to pay the cost of Rs 1,000 within two
months. It ordered the settlement of payment of Rs 51,075
with 12 per cent interest with a cost of Rs 500 to one of
the complainants Geetha Krishnaswamy.
Tiger 'Masthi'
gets operated upon:
The wounded tiger, which was rescued on Thursday from
Nagarahole forests, was operated upon by a team of
veterinarians in Mysore Zoo. The adult male tiger, which
was trapped after a massive operation, which lasted for
nearly 12 hours, has been shifted to the zoo for
treatment. The tiger was visibly in pain with the left
fore paw almost in shreds. Its paw had got caught in a
trap planted by poachers in the forest. The operation was
carried out by Dr. Khadri, Dr. Valandikar and Dr
Shadakshys and lasted for nearly an hour.
S N Hegde is IIT
board member:
Vice Chancellor of Mysore University S N Hegde has been
nominated as member of Board of Governors of Indian
Institute of Technology, Madras, for three years.
According to the university press release, the Human
Resource Development Minister, who chairs the Councils of
IITs, has approved S N Hedge's candidature.
It's victory of
secularism- Vishwanath:
District in-charge Minister H Vishwanath has stated that
the Congress victory was the "triumph of a true
secular party over pseudosecularists for fielding a
communal candidate". He said the elections have
proved who the real secularists were and has further
proved that the minorities, dalits and backward castes
still had confidence in the Congress party.

Mahadev felicitated:
Senior Syndicate member and orthopedic surgeon K Mahadev
was felicitated by Justice Chandrashekariah of the High
Court for his 25 years service in the field of higher
education and medical services. The felicitation function
was organized on the eve of Ukraine government presenting
honorary gold medal to K Mahadev for his service.
Welcoming the Ukraine Government's recognition for
Mahadev's service, the Judge said the State Government
should also encourage people.
Primary
education remained "secondary" in N. R. poll
campaign:
Congress leaders who are upbeat with the election victory
in the Narasimharaja Assembly constituency have many
challenges to face in this segment, which has been long
neglected. The poll campaign had a beeline of ministers
led by Chief Minister S M Krishna assuring people of
adequate water, power, basic facilities and even a cabinet
berth to Congress candidate Tanveer sait. However, what
seem to have missed during the election campaign is the
poor educational infrastructure, low literacy rate and
increasing dropout rate among the minority community.
Task force team
sees waste of water:
The Water Supply and Sanitary Group of Mysore Agenda Task
Force has expressed concern over wastage of 90 lakh liters
of water per day since eight months. MATF members headed
by convenor M Lakshmana visited the industrial estate and
noticed 2mgd of water being wasted when the city is facing
acute scarcity of water. They pointed out that water was
pumped at Hongalli from riverbed with the help of 1000
pump set, which is later discharged to booster pump at
Belavadi.
Parivar
candidate blames Govt for defeat:
Janata Parivar candidate E Maruthi Rao Pawar, who lost to
the Congress in the recent Narasimharaja by poll, held the
ruling Congress Government responsible for his defeat.
Speaking at a function organized by the Kannada Parabha
daily here on Thursday, Powar said his fear of the ruling
establishment "exerting pressure on voters has been
proved right". The Janata Dal (S) had apprehensions
that the ruling party would take a non-democratic stand to
ensure their victory. This was seconded by Intelligence
report. These facts have shown the Congress in poor light,
he said.
40 per cent
power goes in loss, theft- Baligar:
KPTCL chairman and managing director V P Baligar said on
Wednesday the Government should invest Rs 13,000 crore in
the next ten years to bring down the increasing gap
between the demand and supply of power. Delivering a
lecture on "Effect in administration with reference
to power sector reforms" here, he said the gap
between the demand and supply of power had drastically
increased over the years. He admitted that the
transmission loss and power theft at the State and
national level was around 40 per cent. He said that around
30 percent consumers including industrialists, farmers and
government bodies have turned defaulters.
