Hostile tiger Masthi
undergoes surgery:
Tiger Masthi, which had its forepaw trapped in a poachers
"jaw trap", underwent a two-hour surgery at the
Mysore Zoo on Friday. It may be recalled that the male
tiger was found injured with a jaw trap on its foreleg
recently by visitors at Nagarahole national Park. The
forest department officials had then launched a massive
hunt and captured the animal from a shallow cave and
subsequently shifted it to Mysore Zoo. The animal has been
under medical attention by Mysore Zoo veterinarians who
have been trying to save the animal from complications due
to infection.
Lobbying begins
in Cong camp for City's First Citizen's post:
In the wake of the State Cabinet dropping its proposal to
extend the term of Mayors from 12 to 20 months, lobbying
has started for the key post, election for which would be
held in June last week. The City Congress unit is upbeat
after their impressive victory in the Narasimharaja by
poll and is hopeful of retaining power without the support
of the Janata Dal (S). In the 63 members Mysore City
Corporation, Congress has 23 members and is the single
largest party followed by the Janata Dal (S)-18, BJP-16
and independents-8.
Advanta to help
develop disease resistant crops:
The Mysore University will sign a memorandum of
understanding with Advanta India Ltd on Saturday, for
co-operation in the area of development of
disease-resistant hybrid corps. The MoU for long-term
co-operation will help develop disease-resistant crops
like pearl millet, sorghum, rice, cotton, mustard and
maize. Advanta India Ltd has agreed to provide financial
assistance to the tune of Rs 45 lakh over a period of five
years. The Department of Studies in Applied Botany, Seed
Pathology and Biotechnology of the University of Mysore
has considerable expertise and infrastructure in
developing disease-resistant crops over the years. Shekar
Shetty said the department offers technical expertise and
facilities to relevant user agencies such as seed
industries and farmers. Advanta India Limited Seed Company
has come for ward to utilize these facilities.
V-C objects to
registrar assuming "undue" powers:
Mysore University Vice-Chancellor S N Hegde on Monday
expressed reservations about the functioning of registrar
KSN Chikerur. He was reacting to a complaint by syndicate
member K Mahadev with the Lokayuta on misappropriation by
the registrar. He said Chikerur had been appointed by the
Govt to co-ordinate in smooth functioning of the
university. However, "the registrar seems to impose
himself on the syndicate and the Vice-Chancellor".
Nissar Ahmed
selected for Thathachari award:
Renowned Kannada poet K S Nissar Ahmed has been selected
for the "Professor Y T Thathachari Award for Kannada
Literature-2002", for his outstanding contribution to
Kannada literature. The award carries a memento, citation
and a cheque for Rs 50,000. According to managing trustee
Madhuri Thathachari, selection committee chairman G S
Sivarudrappa, former vice-chancellor D Javare Gowda and
Vice-Chancellor H J Lakkappa Gowda unanimously selected
Nissar Ahmed for the award, from among 30 nominations the
committee had received from all over Karnataka and outside
the State.
STF men arrest
brigand's aide:
Special Task Force personnel have nabbed a suspect who is
said to have helped forest brigand Veerappan during the
abduction of cine star Rajkumar from Gajanur. Sources said
Nari Siddha, who had a role in the Rajkumar kidnap case,
was arrested from Yelandur. STF sources said they were on
the look out for Nari Siddha who had evaded arrest for a
long time.
Mane Made Gowda
diverts focus from housing to farmers:
Mysore City Congress President and newly elected MLC D
Made Gowda has said that he would work for the development
of Mysore City and resolve the problems faced by the
tobacco and cotton growers of the district. Doddathammiah
Made Gowda (60), a resident of Kumbar Koppal, is popularly
called "Mane Made Gowda" as he was earlier
associated with the work of implementing the "Asha
Mandir" housing scheme. Made Gowda, the then chairman
of the City Improvement Trust Board in the Janata Party
Govt was the man behind introducing and implementing the
novel Asha Mandir housing programmes.
City schools
deny admission to rural students, KRRS protests:
The District Rural Students Action Committee and Raitha
Sangha activists staged a dharna in front of private
educational institutions protesting against the denial of
admission to students from rural areas. KRRS activists,
led by Pandavapura Sugar Factory employee, K S Nanjunde
Gowda, raised slogans and staged a dharna in front of
Rotary, Sadvidya and Marimallappa schools. He said rural
students who scored 65 per cent marks have been denied
seats in these schools. They threatened to intensify their
agitation if rural students were not given preference in
admission. Marimallappa high school Head Master Nagaraj
and Sadvidya Education Society management committee
members have assured to accommodate students from rural
areas.
Taj buildings
could be used for research- Fora:
Following the State Govt canceling permission for
construction by the Taj Group of Hotels at Moorkal in
Nagarhole National Park, tribal for a have urged the Govt
not to demolish the existing structures constructed by the
group. Nagarahole Budakattu Hakkusathapana Samithi
convenor Ramu has said that the structures constructed at
Moorkal should be used as a Center for Wildlife and Tribal
Research. He said the forest department could also setup
an exhibition center at the main building for promoting
tourism in the region.
MLA Ramadas
seeks action against MUDA employee:
Mysore Urban Development Authority member A Ramdas, MLA,
has urged the urban Development secretary to take action
against a MUDA employee for tampering with records and
misusing funds. He said Narayana Gowda was suspended for
misusing funds and had tampered with the details and
documents in an application submitted in 1991. The
Commissioner had recommended disciplinary action in 1998.
In a letter written to the Urban Development Secretary, he
said Narayana gowda has misused Rs 68,772 without
remitting it to MUDA account.
Mysore varsity
professor approaches High Court:
The Head of the Department of Applied Botany of the Mysore
University has approached the High Court against a notice
served by Varsity Registrar KSN Chikrur. It may be
recalled that the Lokayukta had appointed Registar
Chikkerur as Inquiry Officer to probe into a complaint
filed by N S Vasanthi against Prof H Shekar Shetty.
Vasanti had charged Shetty of having misappropriated funds
and research material due to her she was also terminated
from service despite having served as a key research
officer.
Give varsity due
respect, V-C told:
The Govt would initiate action after studying the annual
audit report, which has pointed out lapses and
irregularities in the Mysore University, Higher Education
Minister G Parameshwar told media persons here. He said he
would initiate action if the "objections raised are
found valid". Parameshwar was referring to the recent
controversy involving Vice Chancellor S N Hegde and
Registrar KSN Chilkerur. Each of them have been accusing
the other of being involved in financial irregularities.
The Minister came down heavily on the University
authorities for making the conflict public thereby
"bringing disrepute to the university".
Yediurappa seeks
Roshan Baig's resignation:
BJP leader B S Yediyurappa has urged Chief Minister S M
Krishna to drop Roshan Baig out of the Cabinet for his
alleged involvement in yet another fake stamp paper racket
in Kanapur of Belgaum. He told media persons here on
Thursday that the Govt should order a high level probe
into the multi crore scandal. "It is unfortunate that
the Govt has not taken the Rs 10,000 crore stamp racket
seriously despite the BJP legislator providing
details", he said. He said the statements made by
underworlds don Muthappa Rai has proved that Karnataka has
become a heaven for underworld dons and anti nationals.
