Social movements not popular- Mayor:
City Mayor B K Prakash has expressed concern over the continued negligence of the exploited sections, which have been deprived of their rights. He was speaking after inaugurating a five-day works hop on the challenges faced by social movements in the present scenario. The Karnataka Dalit Christian Federation organized the workshop. Prakash said that of late, movements launched for fundamental rights and social justice, have not inspired the support expected.

Tribal forum seeks Chief Minister's help to get rightful land:
A tribal forum has urged Chief Minister S M Krishna to direct the Deputy Commissioner to implement an eight-year-old Government Order regarding distribution of land to primitive tribes. The forum further urged the Chief Minister, Revenue Minister and Social Welfare Minister to personally supervise the distribution of land to all the 130 Jenukuruba families. DEED director Srikanth said the Government, at the mini-Cabinet meet held on April 4, had decided to allot 260 acres of land in Dasanapura Hanagodu hobli to 130 Jenukuruba primitive tribal families. These tribals were displaced from Nagarahole national Park from the forests belonging to Hunsur taluk based on the recommendations of the then Deputy Commissioner in 1994-95.

Govt employees rendered "powerless" as PWD fails to submit their bills:
State Govt. employees have been in the dark for the past ten days with the PWD Building Division refusing to part with the power tariff collected from residents to KPTCL. Residents of Government apartments, which houses 33 families, have been having a harrowing experience for the second time in recent times. Kalamandira Apartments, which comes under the PWD Building Department, had divided the rental system on three different schemes. Those whose power connections have been disconnected are residents who pay Rs 40 per day as rent.

Monsoons keep Mysore Corp. on its toes:
City Corporation authorities face a harrowing times every year when the moons set in with lack of a proper drainage system, many areas of the City, particularly the low-lying ones are inundated with water. It may be recalled that the City which had proper drain system to harvest rainwater and which was connected to all major lakes, now stands encroached. Within the City into stretches of land has also added to the woes of the residents. Corporation authorities seem to be on their toes ever since the showers began. The badly planned drainage system and overflowing drains are a common sight here.

Triveni to step up gear boxes export:
The Mysore unit of the Triveni group of industries is expected to meet the export demand for its turbine gearbox from Bangladesh, posting a 10 per cent export growth. According to the company management, Triveni group, with Rs 650 crore turnovers is poised for a 40 per cent growth as far as its Mysore unit was concerned. The unit has been exporting the product to countries like US, Germany, Holland, Singapore, Malaysia and the Middle East apart from meeting the domestic demand.

Injured tiger in Mysore zoo kicks up controversy:
Masthi, the injured tiger in Mysore zoo, has become the subject of a debate, which is likely to touch the raw nerve of many animal lovers. The fact that the eight-year-old animal has refused to co-operate with doctors and is repeatedly tearing open the operated part of its limb has made many citizens wonder whether the feline, which ruled the jungles, has to struggle to survive in a cage. In fact, doctors who performed the surgery on Masthi feel that saving the injured tiger was a "pointless" exercise. They have not been openly recommending mercy killing as this would stir up a lot of negative sentiments among the public.

Three food Parks allotted for State yet to take off:
The three Food Parks sanctioned by the Centre have failed to take off, said Minister for Food Processing Industries, Chamanlal Gupta. He told media persons here on Thursday that the Union Government had sanctioned one park each at Malur, Bagalkot and Jewarigi. Funds for the initial phase have already been sanctioned, he said. The State government has demanded three more Parks. However, even the sanctioned three "have not taken off", he said. Gupta noted that the parks in Cochin, Nagpur and Madurai were functioning well.

Registrar's services withdrawn:
The State Government has withdrawn the services of Mysore University Registrar KSN Chikkerur from the education department. A notification to this effect, signed by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms under secretary to the Government B V Kumaraswamy, has been passed with immediate effect. It is learnt that the Government has withdrawn the services of Chikkerur following differences between him and Vice-Chancellor S N Hegde. Hegde will appoint one of the Deans has adhoc Registrar.

Brindavan Extension murder- Former neighbour among five youths held:
The City police have arrested five youths in connection with the murder of an aged woman, Gauri Raghavan. The arrested includes a friend of the family. It may be recalled that Gauri was smothered with a pillow at residence in Brindavan Extension where she was staying alone. Police had recovered valuables including gold ornaments and an expensive camera worth Rs 1 lakh. The police gained a breakthrough after interrogating Manja, who knew the victim.

Local sculptor Channapaachary gets a pat:
B N Channapachary, popularly called Swarna Shilpi, has been selected for the Rotary Kala Pratishthana Award for 2002. Mattur Krishnamurthy at Rotary High School will present the award on Thursday. Channapaachary, who hails from Bilikere village, has helped beautiful temples and the idols of gods and goddess in and around Mysore. His father, Narayanchar, who was a famous sculptor, trained him. Narayanachar, who was known to sculpt big figures of gods and goddess, was introduced to sculptor of Mysore Palace, Singannachar. Narayanachar has done most of the silver and gold work in temple around Mysore.
