Chikkanna is City Mayor, Arjun Kumar deputy:
T B Chikkanna of the Congress is the new Mayor of Mysore
while A J Arjun Kumar is the Deputy. Chikkanna posted 38
votes while his nearest Janata Dal (S) rival D Nagabhushan
got 18. However, the deputy mayor's post saw no contest
with the lone Congress candidate A J Arjun Kumar getting
elected unopposed. BJP remained out of the fray. In all,
the Mysore City Corporation has 65 elected Corporators, a
Member of Parliament, three MLAs and two MLCs, totaling 71
voters.
Hospitals asked to dispose waste at treatment plant:
JSS Math Seer Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji called upon
hospitals and private nursing home managements to make use
of the bio-medical treatment plant constructed near Varuna
village to dispose of bio-waste from Hospitals. Speaking
after inaugurating the bio-medical waste treatment plant
established by Shree Consultants here, he said waste from
hospitals and nursing homes should be scientifically
processed rather than dumped into Corporation bins.
Playing
surrogate parent to jumbo calf:
A five-week old orphaned elephant calf, rescued by the
Forest department, and currently at the Mysore Zoo, has
found a "surrogate parent" in Rajgopal. The two
have been inseparable right from time the calf was
discovered. "It refuses to sleep unless I am beside
him", says Rajgopal affectionately fondling the tiny
calf who is yet to be named. The calf, which was part of a
herd, which entered a field at the outskirts of Nugu
Wildlife Sanctuary, accidentally fell into a pit when
irate villagers chased the herd away.
Rangayana all
set to stage literary works of Tejaswi:
Nataka Karnataka Rangayana, to popularize literary works
other than plays, will introduce the literary work of
noted Kannada writer Poornachandra Tejaswi into theatre
forms. The adaptation of the literary work into theatre
would be completed by August 15, said Rangayana director
Prasanna. The attempt coincides with the writer being
felicitated with prestigious Pampa award, he said.
Prasanna said the short-listing of works to be adopted for
theatre was underway. However, he claimed that Tejaswi's
work has the potential for characterization though
"it may not be dramatic". Noted theatre director
R. Nagesh would direct the play.
Former Mangalore
V-C Gopal dead:
Former Vice-Chancellor of the Mangalore University S Gopal
(62) died here at Mysore on Saturday night following a
heart attack. He leaves behind his wife and three
daughters. He was cremated at Sampada farm on Sunday.
Gopal, a native of Hoskote was a student of the Department
of Physics, Manasagangothri. He began his career as a
lecturer in Nuclear Physics before becoming the V-C of
Mangalore University in 1995.
Medical
insurance scheme to be extended:
Health Task Force Chairman Sudarshan said the
State-Government was planning to extend the pilot project
for medical insurance scheme, implemented at T Narasipur
Taluk to the rest of the state. Speaking at a function
organized by the Karuna Trust to inaugurate the medical
insurance scheme, he said the medical insurance scheme
would also be launched in Bylahongala taluk in Belgaum
district from July 1st. He said that the insurance scheme
would help the people and families belonging to the below
poverty line who could not bear the medical expenditure.
Theatre Artist
Yoganarasimha is no more:
Noted theatre H K Yoganarasimha died at his J P Nagar
residence after prolonged illness. He leaves behind three
sons and four daughters. Chief Minister S M Krishna,
Minister H Vishwanath and legislators A Ramdas, Tanwir
Sait, D Made Gowda, Rangayana Director Prasanna and
theatre activists expressed their grief. A condolence
meeting was also held at Rangayana.
CJ of Andhra HC
forced to make room for Krishna:
Chief Justice A R Laxmana of AP High Court was in an
embarrassing situation when the staff of the Government
guest house removed his belongings from VIP suit he was
occupying. The CJ had come here to take part in a
religious programme at an ashram in the city. However, the
staff of the guest house removed all the belongings of the
CJ to accommodate CM S M Krishna who arrived in the city.
The CJ who was annoyed at the action of the staff
reprimanded the authorities for their failure to intimate
him.
State funding
inadequate for development: Ramdas
The State government has failed to contribute its share in
joint-venture development projects with the Central
Government, said BJP MLA A. Ramdas. Speaking to media
persons Ramdas requested CM S. M. Krishna to fulfill the
commitment of the State by releasing funds and acquiring
land to develop Mysore. Vehemently opposing the shifting
of the Hardware Park from Mysore to Bangalore, the
legislator flayed the allotment of land to educational
institutions to develop parks.
Cauvery Row: CM
asked to reject PM's direction:
Kannada Chaluvali leader and former MLA G. Narayana Kumar
has urged CM to reject PM's direction to release 3 tmc
Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. Speaking to our
correspondent, he said, successive Tamil Nadu Chief
Ministers have continued to adopt black mail tactics and
have been threatening to boycott the Cauvery Tribunal just
to get water from Karnataka. He flayed the PM for
directing the release of water without knowing the pulse
of the people of Karnataka.
Farmers stage
protest, seek Bus Stand:
The Farmer in the city protested for not providing an
alternative place for private bus operators plying to
villages. The forum led by Mallesh and Shantha Kumar laid
siege on the Office of the Deputy Commissioner seeking
conversion to the grounds in front of the Mysore Place
into a bus stand. The police arrested around 100
protesters when they tried to barge in to the DC's office.
