Wine
merchants want excise duty reduced:
The Mysore and Chamarajanagar district Wines Merchants
Association has urged the State Government to reduce
excise tax and take measures to check sale of seconds
liquor. Speaking to media persons, association president C
Guruswamy said Karnataka has imposed the highest excise
duty in the country. He threatened that the wine merchants
would launch an agitation if the Government failed to meet
their demands immediately.

facility for farmers' center:
Agriculture Minister T.B.Jayachandra called upon the
farmers to make use of the website facilities available at
the farmers' extension centers (Ritha Samparka Kendras) to
know the prices of the agriculture produces in different
markets in the State. The minister observed that the
regular update of information of the website has also
helped agriculture extension officers clear doubts raised
by the farmers.
Government
undermining court orders on environment -Saldhana:
Justice M.F.Saldhana came down heavily on the State
Government for working to abort various court rulings,
which were in the interest of the public. Delivering a
lecture at Mysore University, he brought out the failure
of the State Government in realizing the importance of
environment factor in wealth building. He pointed out that
his orders to convert all the commercial vehicles in
Bangalore to natural gas fuel mode was stayed to promote
illegal petrol lobby.
Check
transportation of animals: Forum
Pranidaya Sangha convener has threatened to lead thousands
of animal lovers to the check post to block the transport
of animals to neighboring States. He demanded that the
police and revenue department officials co-ordinate in
checking the illegal transportation of animals. He claimed
that animal lovers and the police were successful in
thwarting animal sacrifice during the Mahashivarathri
festival at Talakad temple.

should probe Raj's kidnap: Kareem
Abdul Kareem, father of slain police officer Shakeel
Ahmed, has urged Chief Minister S.M.Krishna not to release
Tamil activist Kolathur Mani from police custody. He
requested the State Government to order a CBI inquiry into
the alleged payment of ransom in exchange of Rajkumar's
release. He told media persons that he had demanded that
the police are given a free hand to interrogate any one
associated with Veerappan. Mani's arrest is a "big
catch", he said.

The National Institute of Engineering has bagged 16 ranks
including 4 first ranks in the B.E degree examination of
University of Mysore, held during August 2001.
Second-rung
leaders to lead Dal: JD (S) chief:
Janata Dal (S) leader Siddaramaiah has put forward
second-rung leadership theory to revive the Janata Dal's
hold in the State, without sidelining seniors.
Siddaramaiah's remarks in this regard is sequel to the
recent announcement by senior leader Ramakrishna Hegde of
his decision to retire from active politics. He claimed
that former PM Deve Gowda, Hedge and Bommai should stay in
politics. "Politics is not a profession. There is no
need for retirement", he said.
