Gujarat communal carnage: Defence Minister blasts Congress
Defence Minister George Fernandez singled out the Congress for holding the Gujarat and Union Governments at fault for the recent communal carnage. Speaking to media persons here at Mysore, Fernandez defended the Gujarat and the Union Governments, and handed out a clean chit on their performance in stemming communal violence. Terming the charges made by the Congress that the Government had failed in controlling violence as a "shameless allegation", he said when the Congress was ruling over 3000 people were killed on the streets of Delhi. George was referring to the violence that erupted after Indira Gandhi's assassination.

Sandesh is new MUDA Chairman:
The appointment of Sandesh Nagaraj as Mysore Urban Development Authority chief was received with mixed reaction with many senior Congressmen expressing their unhappiness. While loyal Congressmen expressed their resentment for being ignored during the welcome ceremony, Sandesh's followers took him out in a jubilant procession. The belated appointment was preceded by intense lobbying with a majority of Congress leaders opposing the nomination of Sandesh, whom they feel was a new entrant to the party.

Veteran Freedom fighter M N Jois is dead:
Veteran freedom fighter M N Jois (98), died at his residence after a prolonged illness. He leaves behind three sons. Jois, born in 1905, plunged into the freedom movement and became a follower of teachers M Venkatachalaiah, popularly known as Thathiah, and Sriramaraya. In 1938 he took part in the Shivapura Convention when he was arrested and imprisoned for three months. He also took part in the 1942 Quit India Movement. He met Gandhiji and invited him to visit Tagadur. The Father of the Nation launched the khadi movement in Nanjangud village.

Merchants down shutters over shifting of Santhepet market:
The shifting of Santhepet, the wholesale market from the heart of the city took a new turn with merchants taking out a protest here at Mysore. A full-fledged market was constructed at Bandipalya on Nanjangud Road, which has all the basic facilities to accommodate all the traders and merchants of Santhepet. Merchants downed shutters and blocked roads against the decision to shift the venue forcibly.

Hangarahalli quarry men turn hostile:
We were acting a scene for a film crew, they claim:
The five bonded labourers who were allegedly forced to work in a quarry with their legs chained in Hangarahalli near Srirangapattana have turned hostile. Deposing before the Additional District and Session Judge K M Thammiah, the victims-Venkatachala, Venkatesh, Krishna, Gopal and Nagaraj denied that they were chained by the quarry owner Puttaswamy Gowda and his family members. They claimed that, they volunteered to get their legs chained following a request from a film crew which had assured to give them Rs.500 for just five days. "However, when the film unit people failed to turn up for shooting, KRRS activists, and some other organizations, raided the quarry and took us to Srirangapattana police station and got the shackles removed" they said.

Steep fall in KRS water level:
The Mysore Agenda Task Force has appealed to Mysoreans not to waste water following a steep fall in water level at the Krishnaraja Sagar Reservoir (KRS). MATF Water Supply and Sanitation convener M Lakshmana said the water level at KRS was 89.73 ft as on March 23 as against 94.09 ft during the previous year. He has also requested Mysoreans not to water lawns and wash cars for 3 months. He also said if there was a further fall of water level to 74 ft, they would be forced to pump water from the river bed directly with the help of two 1,000 HP pumps.
