Minister's temple visit condemned:
What
was meant to be a routine religious visit by Primary Education
Minister H. Vishwanath to Marikamba temple situated at
Shivanasamudra led to some controversy later in the day.
After paying obeisance to the deity, the Minister attended
a function at the University of Fine Arts College. The
Convener of Pragathiranga Mr. Ramdas alleged that two
sheep were offered as 'Bali' (sacrifice) on behalf of
the Minister. Ramdas sought an explanation from the Minister
about his involvement in the ritual. "You are better suited
to be a minister of the slaughter house," Ramdas alleged.
A verbal duel started with Ramdas calling Vishwanath 'unfit'.
Enraged, the Minister shot back at Ramdas, terming him
as 'unfit'.

Woman gives savings for quake relief:
Allola
Bai, a native of Rajasthan settled in Mysore donated her
life's savings of Rs. 2 lakh to the Gujarat quake victims.
At a simple function organized at the Lord Ganapathi temple
in Kuvempunagar she presented the amount to Deputy Commissioner
B.Basavaraju. Deputy Commissioner commended Allola Bai
for presenting her life savings to victims.

Yadiyurappa demands action on animal sacrifice issue:
BJP State leader Yadiyurappa demanded C.M. S. M. Krishna
to initiate action against his cabinet member H.Vishwanath
for his presence during animal sacrifice ritual recently.
He also condemned the attempt to assault Pragathiranga
convener K.Ramdas who openly opposed the Minister's act
of sacrificing sheep.

Sentenced for murder attempt:
The
II Additional District and Sessions Judge sentenced Suresh
to undergo 5 years imprisonment on charges of attempt
to murder on Harish in December 1994. K.R.Police had booked
a case and investigated.

Students back teachers' strike:
The students of JSS Women's College has resolved to go
on strike if the State Government failed to withdraw its
notification on cutting 15% grants for higher education.
The Student Secretary said the union would boycott class
and extend support to the statewide strike called by the
teaching community.

CPI condoles Indrajit Gupta's death:
The district council of the CPI and AITUC has condoled
the death of veteran Communist leader Indrajit Gupta,
who passed away in Kolkata on February 20. In a condolence
message CPI district secretary K.Venkataramaih said Indrajit
Gupta was the doyen of the working masses of India.

Vidyavardaka celebrations on March 3:
The two-day golden jubilee celebrations of Vidyavardaka
Education Institute and the silver jubilee of the Vidyavardaka
Law College will be held on March 3. Governor V.S.Ramadevi
will inaugurate the golden jubilee celebration in the
presence of Balagangadharanatha Swamiji. Primary Education
Minister Vishwanath will inaugurate the exhibition and
Kannada and Culture Minister Rani Satish will take part.
Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji, Union Minister Dhananjaya
Kumar and Former deputy C.M. Siddaramaiha will attend
the valedictory function.

Vikrant workers call for Mysore bandh:
Trade Unions and JD leaders have threatened to call for
Mysore bandh on March 12 if the Vikrant Tyres Management
fails to concede to the demands of the workers. The management,
which availed Rs. 273 crores as loans, has invested only
Rs. 50 crore for the plant and had diverted the entire
amount, failing to concede to the demands of the workers
on wage hike. BJP legislator Shankaralinge Gowda threatened
to stall assembly proceedings if the State Government
fails to take up the cause of the workers.

CPM blasts Government on IT:
State CPM secretary Suryanarayana Rao criticized the Union
Government for its decision to impose 2% sur-charge on
income tax and urged the Government to immediately withdraw
the move.

JD (S) workers burned the effigy of Manohar Joshi in front
of K.R.Circle against his controversial statements on
the border issue.
