Four
killed, six injured in van mishap:
Four persons were killed and six others injured when the
van in which they were traveling turned over near Saragur
of Belakwadi in Malavalli taluk on Thursday. Police said
the dead include the taluk DYFI vice president L Lingaraju
(35), Honganahalli Mallappa, Belakawadi Sidhhiah and
Hosahalli Nagarj. Three persons have been admitted to K R
Hospital, Mysore. Villagers staged a protest seeking
compensation for the injured and threatened to stop
postmortem being conducted on the bodies. Former Minister
B Somashekar intervened and assured the villagers of
securing compensation.

With the countdown for the Narasimharaja Assembly by poll
nearing, the parties are witnessing heightened activities
within and the leaders are playing with cards close to
their chest . Though the candidate's selection seems to
have been finalized in all major parties, they may not
file the nominations in the initial days and would wait
for the last date for nomination. The move is aimed to
outwit the nearest rival as the constituency which has
1.97lakh voters has a considerable chunk of Muslim votes,
closely followed by Vokkaligas, SC and ST. Each would bank
on either of this section to back their parties.
Voter
identity card is a must:
The Election Commission has directed voters of
Narasimharaja Assembly constituency to produce their
identity cards before casting their identity cards before
casting their votes on may 31, Deputy Commissioner B
Basavaraju told the media here on Saturday. The EC in a
bid to check bogus voting has initiated this measure, he
said. Voters without valid identity card issued by the
Election Commission should come with ration card, driving
license, Electricity bill, bus pass or identity card
issued in the education institutions.
Quality,
the new yardstick in State's silk industry:
Director of Central Sericulture technological Research
Institute. T H Someshekar, said quality based pricing for
silk cocoons would be introduced soon. Speaking at a
workshop for Seri culturists in Mysore on Friday, he said
farmers could not meet the market demand for quality silk.
He directed silk farmers to develop a system where they
can check the quality of silk, so that middlemen could not
exploit farmers. These recommendations would figure in the
Tenth plan, Somashekar added.
Lokayukta
orders inquiry into Govt motor repair:
Lokayukta officer Siddegowda has ordered an inquiry into
the alleged irregularities in connection with the repair
of a motor at the Government Press here on Friday. The
Registrar visited the Press following a complaint which
stated that the motor attached to the Press had been
replaced by a company located in Belagola. The Press
authorities had paid the company around Rs 3.7 lakh and
tampered with the label. Siddegowda would submit a report
to the Karnataka Lokayukta venkatachala.
Trade
unions take out rally on May Day, oppose Govt policies:
Hundreds of activists from various trade union
organizations took out a rally to protest against the
"globalization, privatization, and anti-labour
policies" of the Government as part of the May Day
celebrations. The rally was taken out through prominent
streets of the City with activists raising slogans against
the Governments and its policies, Later, they held a
meeting at Rangacharalu Town Hall.
AIADMAK
to field candidate for Narasimharaja by poll:
The AIADMK will field its candidate for the ensuing
Narasimharaja assembly by polls and would seek the support
of Janata Dal (S), said party State secretary V A
Pugazhendi. Speaking to media persons here on Wednesday,
he said AIADMK chief J Jayalaithaa will finalize the
candidate shortly and would speak to JD (S) chief H D Deve
Gowda, he added. The party is serious on contesting the
election as party candidate Amjad Khan had secured 18,000
votes in the previous elections, he said.

Veeresh panel recommendations:
The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) has urged the
Government to reject the Veeresh Committee report on
causes of the suicides by framers. KRRS convenor N Nanje
Gowda said Veeresh Committee, constituted to look into the
reasons for farmers suicides has acted like the
Government`s mouthpiece instead of coming out with genuine
reasons behind suicides.
