Minister wants panel
to study disparities in SC reservations:
Union Minister V Srinivas Prasad said he has requested the
Centre to appoint a national commission to study the
disparities in reservation benefits within the Scheduled
Castes. Speaking after inaugurating a State-level
Pourakarmikas' conference here on Sunday, he said the
Commission should seek reports from States and set right
the inequalities in sharing reservation benefits among
Dalits. The very concept of reservation seems to be losing
it's meaning, he said.

Angry mob unleashes
fury in Kamagere:
Thousands of angry supporters of former Minister Nagappa
blocked roads, set Tamil Nadu Transport corporation bus
afire and pelted stones at police vehicles in Kamagere and
Hannur. And the reasons for the fury they unleashed were
many. State JD (U) secretary and MLA AR Krishna Murthy
said the authorities had failed to deploy the 200 STF
personnel who were camping at Gundal to nab Veerappan who
was within 2 km radius for more than 3 hours after the
kidnap. He charged the Government of having failed to step
up security for Nagappa following the kidnap threat.
Crowds refuse to see
reason, detain Ministers at farmhouse:
Nothing could dampen the spirits of Nagappa's supporters
and JD (U) workers who had gathered in full force before
Nagappa's farmhouse since morning. Enthusiastic activists
prevented buses from plying between Kollegal and M. M.
Hills for the second day and staged a protest against the
State Government and the police department. Though local
JD (U) leader Mahadev Swamy and others repeatedly
requested the mob to calm down, they refused to do so.
They went to the extent of detaining Government
representatives.
Veerashaiva maths'
contributions hailed:
The Veerashaiva math was lauded for its contribution in
promoting primary education at the 87th Jayanthi
celebrations of Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami at the
Suttur math premises. Inaugurating the Jayanthi
celebrations, Minister of State for primary and Secondary
Education B. K. Chandrashekar said the Suttur math, which
has a 1,000-year history, has sponsored the primary
education of several thousands of students. "Though
the Supreme Court has laid down that compulsory primary
education be given to children, it is institutions like
the Suttur matt which has taken up this cause
seriously," Chandrashekar said.
Veerashaivas plan
statewide stir, will call on CM:
Enraged over the abduction of Nagappa, and the Special
Task Force's "inability" to tackle the Veerappan
menace, Veerashaivas in the Old Mysore region have united
under the "Nagappannavara Bidugade Horata Kriya
Samiti" banner to secure the former Minister's
release. Unhappy with the State Government's strategy,
they had earlier joined hands with other parties and
organizations to observe a bundh in Chamarajanagar
district. The Veerashaivas- the community to which Nagappa
belongs, have also invited leaders from all political
parties to join them and sought co-operation from other
organizations. Sources added that Lingayat leaders have
also appealed to Veerashaiva mutt seers to prevail on the
Government for Nagappa's release. The Veerashaiva may also
appeal to all mutt leaders to launch a Statewide stir
against the Government for the delay in Nagappa's release.
Corp. divided on
Dasara fete:
Mysore City Corporation (MCC) here remained divided on the
mode of organizing the annual Dasara festival, at its
meeting held on Friday. While a few members felt it
prudent to observe the festival as a low-key affair, the
majority suggested that the festival be revived to its
original glory. Janata Dal (S) Cheluva Gowda urged the
members not to make light of the Veerappan-Nagappa issue,
by discussing banal issues like the Dasara festival. His
colleague Narayan said Dasara was a big responsibility,
requiring a minimum investment of Rs 5 crore.
