Mayor, MLA held for
storming CADA office:
Zilla Cauvery
Kriya Samiti activists, including the Mayor and a
legislator, were arrested for staging dharna and
ransacking Command Area Development Authority office
protesting against the release of water from Kabini
reservoir. They demanded that the State Government reject
the Supreme Court judgment to protect the interests of
farmers. The activists including farmer leader Mallesh
managed to enter, ransack and lock up the office forcing
the employees to leave the office.
Veerappan country
wears battlefield:
So what's different about this time's attempt to get
Veerappan? Is it going to be a series of "we missed
him by a whisker" story? Judging by ground realities
there is obviously great difference in the attitude of the
States and the police force it is aggressive. From
Kollegal to the Tamil Nadu borders, it was a virtual
battlefield on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Only the enemy
was missing. There were police vehicles virtually swarming
every narrow road that winds through the forests along the
Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border-in marked contrast to anything
seen during the earlier campaigns, say old timers. There
seem to be Special Task Force personnel stationed at every
tiny village.
Kabini water outflow
comes to a halt:
The outflow of water from Kabini reservoir came to a
halt due to the damage caused to the crest gates by
farmers who laid siege to the reservoir on Saturday. It
may be recalled that thousands of farmers from Kabini belt
laid siege to the reservoir and had caused extensive
damage to the equipment at Kabini reservoir. They had
destroyed the cruise gate monitoring equipment after
assaulting an engineer and operator. As the damage on the
crest gate was extensive, water can be released only after
the damage was rectified, the authorities have said. It is
also said that the rectification work would take more than
a week.
Mani refuses to leave
jail, shoots off letters to Parimala, Veerappan:
Tamil activist Kolathur Mani, lodged in Bellary
Central Jail on charges of his alleged connections with
Veerappan, has expressed his willingness to help Nagappa's
family. He had earlier rejected the proposal to become the
Government's emissary to Veerappan. He has expressed his
support to the family of former Minister Nagappa, held
hostage by Veerappan, to secure the safe release of
Nagappa. Sources said he has also sent a letter to forest
brig and Veerappan. Family sources said Kolathur Mani may
have requested the brigand not to demand his release and
may have pressured him to release nagappa immediately.
Three farm owners held
for aiding gang:
The Special Task force has taken three farm owners into
custody for playing host to 10 members of a gang for ten
days in the Gundal forest. According to STF sources, the
three- Krishne Gowda, D. Swamy and Rangaswamy Nayak
accommodated a group of ten for more than 10 days. The
gang had stayed with them under the pretext of being
peacock hunters. The STF authorities picked up the three
for failing to inform the matter at the nearest police
station or STF camp in Gundal. The police have also seized
Rs 500 notes from them. Sources further said that the farm
owners have revealed that they had provided ration to the
gang.
Has granite lobby a
hand in Nagappa's kidnap?
The mystery behind the abduction of former minister
Nagappa by Veerappan has deepened after an analysis was
made on the colluders in the crime. The possibility that
the kidnap could have been initiated at the instance of
adversaries or powerful locals, has given the case a
serious twist. The recent arrest of three farm-owners who
had hosted a "ten-member peacock hunting gang' for
many days, has provided the necessary inputs in this
direction. The STF and local police are now on the look
out for three other locals. The hand of some mysterious
elements suspected to be behind the kidnap is gathering
credibility following admissions by Nagappa's family
members.
Ace at deception, he
sits a pretty distance away misleading STF:
There seems to be no immediate end in sight to the
abduction issue even three weeks after Veerappan walked
away with his prize catch former minister Nagappa. The
initial lapse on the part of the Government, which failed
to pursue the brigand for three days, their failure to
step up a combined operation later and threats from police
chiefs to villagers have raised concern. A section of
"Veerappan watchers' believe that the stepping up of
operations was a ploy to turn the heat on the brigand.
This was a well-intentioned move to force the brigand
abandon his hostage to save his own life.
It's do or die:
Farmers threaten to take over reservoir:
The Chamarajanagar Zilla Hitharakshana Samithi leaders
have threatened to lay siege to the Kabini reservoir if
the State Government tries to release water from Kabini as
per Tamil Nadu's demands. Samithi president Mallesh told
media persons here on Friday that the Government had
released 3 TMC ft of water from Kabini reservoir to Tamil
Nadu. This was against the decision of the Irrigation
Consultative Committee (ICC). He said the ICC meeting had
passed a resolution not to release water to Tamil Nadu
observed that the present level of water would not be
enough to save crops in the Kabini achukat area. "The
Government will have to face the music if it releases
water with the help of the policemen when our lives are at
stake," he said.
