KRRS seeks help
of stars to add glitter to protests:
To add glitter to the ongoing protests on the release of
water to Tamil Nadu, the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS)
has urged the Karnataka film industry and cinema stars to
join their bandwagon. Farmers have been innovating new
ways of protests. On Friday, a semi-nude procession was
taken out from Kyathanahalli in Pandavapura taluk to
Krishnarajasagar reservoir. They have threatened the stars
of closing down all cinema theatres if they did not
express their solidarity with the ongoing protests before
Sept 23.
Fresh charges
leveled against V-C:
Even as Mysore University Vice-Chancellor S. N. Hegde
denied the corruption charges leveled against him,
Syndicate member K Mahadev has come out with a fresh list
of charges. In a letter to the Governor and Chancellor
Chathurvedi, Mahadev has stated that Vice-Chancellor Hegde
has "made a blunder by claiming that he has paid back
the money in cash to Ramdas, T. T. L. Trust Chairman, in
July, 2002". "How can the V-C claim that he paid
back the bribe amount in July 2001 when no money
transaction had taken place before August 2001," he
asked.
Congman
manhandled by JD (S) workers in Mysore:
The meeting organized by leaders of all parties to condole
the death of Guruswamy, who became a martyr for the
farmers' cause, witnessed some tense moments when Janata
Dal (S) workers manhandled former District congress
president. The incident occurred when JD (S) leader
Siddaramaiah was addressing a huge crowd on the Cauvery
issue on Friday. Siddaramaiah took potshots at the Chief
Minister, when was objected to by a Congress leader, R
Shankare Gowda. R Shankare Gowda said former Prime
Minister H. D. Deve Gowda had favoured the release of
Cauvery water and demanded an immediate clarification on
this. Irked by this, a group of JD (S) activists pulled
Shankare Gowda out of the dais and started raining blows
on him. Some also hurled stones at him while yet another
group tried to assault him with chairs.
Proper documents
sought to get provident fund:
Provident Fund assistant Commissioner Bhaskaran has called
upon provident fund members and industries to submit
proper documents for the speedy clearance of benefits.
Participating in an interactive session organized by the
Nanjangud Industries Association, he said his department
would focus on improving efficiency, transparency and
would try to streamline the administrative machinery.
Greens urge DC
to ban use of plastic bags:
City-based environmentalists have urged the Deputy
commissioner Kumar Naik to ban the use of plastic products
like carry bags. Greens, who attended a talk in Mysore on
the ill effects of using plastics, decided to approach the
Deputy Commissioner to issue a ban on three plastic
products carry bags, cups and sheets. This is already in
force in Ooty, Hassan and Chikmagalore. Advocate Amble
Shivananda Swamy said it was the constitutional duty of
all citizens to protect natural resources and the
environment. Environment engineer V Jagannatha said
"the dream of bringing literary, creative and
artistic campaigns for the preservation of Kukkarahally
Lake should be made true". He said they had visited
over 1,000 houses in Kukkarahally village and
Saraswathipurm Layout and have requested them to reduce
the use of plastics.
Leaders seek
Krishna's resignation:
Leaders at the "all-party" meeting on Monday
urged the government to stop release of water to Tamil
Nadu to protect the interests of the State farmers. They
demanded that Chief Minister S M Krishna quit office if
the failed to protect the interests of the farmers and the
State. The leaders came down heavily on the Government for
its failure to apprise the Supreme Court and the Cauvery
River Authority about the drought like situation the State
is facing and the plight of the farmers. Addressing the
farmers at the Raitha Sabhagana here, State JD (U)
president C Byre Gowda said the Government should stop
release of water to Tamil Nadu as the farmers in Cauvery
achukat are facing acute water scarcity.
Peace march
turns violent, curfew again in K R Nagar:
The peace march led by district in-charge Minister H
Vishwanath sparked off violent incidents, resulting in the
police resorting to lathi-charge at K R Nagar on Monday.
Vishwanath, along with former minister S Nanjappa was
holding a peace march after Saturday's communal violence
and arson, which caused extensive damage. The peace march
was supposed to assess the damage and announce
compensation to victims. However, an irate group charged
the minister with siding with a particular community.
Rajkumar kidnap-
4 appear in court:
Four accused arrested in connection with the Rajkumar
abduction case were produced before the Kollegal JMFC
court on Monday. However, Kolathur Mani who was supposed
to be produced before the court did not turn up. He is
currently in Bellary jail. Pandian, Sampath, Raja and
Muthukumar who were produced were arrested for their role
in Rajkumar abduction by Veerappan. Raja had been lodged
in Bijapur jail while the other three were lodged at
Mysore central jail.
"Jail Bharo"
agitation against water release:
The Cauvery Kriya Samithi protesting against release of
water to Tamil Nadu has decided to launch a "jail
bharo" campaign from Tuesday, demanding immediate
stoppage of water release to Tamil Nadu. In a resolution
passed at an all-party meet attended by elected
representatives and political leaders here on Monday, the
Cauvery Samiti appealed to all the elected representatives
to join the "jail bharo" campaign. They
criticized the State Government for releasing water from
Kabini reservoir under police cover to Tamil Nadu when
there is not sufficient water to meet the demands of the
farmers in the Cauvery achukat.
Violence in H D
Kote, police fire in the air:
Villagers try to storm Kabini, several hurt in
stone-throwing High drama prevailed at H D Kote hand post
when farmers, who had gathered here from various parts of
the taluk and neighbouring villages, staged a itched
battle against policeman when they were prevented from
storming the Kabini reservoir on Sunday. Police fired in
the air after a lathi charge failed to stop the angry
brick-pelting farmers. Hundreds of villagers were arrested
and many, including policemen, were injured in the melee.
Prohibitory orders have been clamped in the entire H D
Kote taluk. Earlier Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS)
president K S Puttaniah and former MP G Made Gowda courted
arrest along with agitating farmers of H D Kote. Later,
both were released.
Nagappa
loyalists out on bandit trail:
Two days after suspending combing operations by STF. Three
small bands of Nagappa's loyalists have entered the forest
from different directions to gather information on
Veerappan's movements, even as the Janata Parivar decided
to start its own save-Nagappa initiatives by seeking
Defence Minister George Fernandez intervention in securing
the JD (U) leader's safe release. Meanwhile, human rights
activists Prof Kalyani and Puduvai Sukumaran, who were
earlier part of the team that mediated with Veerappan for
Dr. Rajkumar's release, are believed to have offered to
negotiate with the bandit for Nagappa's release. Sources
told this paper the loyalists have also assigned JD (U)
party men in villages bordering the forest to send
woodcutters and shepherds scouting for information.
K R Nagar
returning to normalcy:
The Krishnaraja Nagar town, which witnessed incidents of
violence, arson and looting following a communal clash on
Saturday, is limping back to normalcy. Though the district
administration has clamped curfew and issued
shoot-at-sight orders on Sunday, no untoward incident was
reported in the taluk from Saturday night. Additional
forces including six platoons of KSRP, four platoons of
DAR and police officers are pressed into service. The
police have shifted three out of the 26 injured to K R
hospital in Mysore and have arrested more than 100
persons. The revenue officials visited and assessed
property loss in all the 25 damaged shops in the arson.
Meanwhile, district in charge minister and local
legislator H Vishwantah, camping in K R Nagar town, held
an all-party meeting appealing to the leaders and the
public to maintain peace in the town.
