The eternal choices that one has to make between the forces of good and evil has tormented many a soul. For if one opts to go with the good, one can hope for salvation, while the wrong choice could take us to damnation. In the words of President Bush, there are only two choices – You are with us or with them, there is no via media, no other possibility that one can take a neutral stand and say that we keep an equal distance from both! In a world, which is only black and white with no shades of gray, we are in a quandary as to with whom we have to side. Osama Bin Laden at one time was one of ours. He was the great leader defending the free democratic world from the red devil, that is the evil forces of communism as personified by the USSR. At that time he was financed by CIA, pampered by the free world and aided through Pakistan. With all these help, the Taliban drove away the evil communists from Afghanistan and saved democracy. That is what it was said then. As time passed, this child grew into a monster and threatened the very same people who had encouraged it. This went on until September 11th when the WTC was destroyed and at the juncture, Osama became the personification of all the evil in the world and Bush swore to get him “Dead or Alive”. The world had moved a full circle! Coming to killing people, the WTC tragedy shocked the whole world as every brick falling was shown in full colour and stereophonic sound in drawing rooms all over the world. The killing of thousands of innocent civilians horrified all and Osama became a bloodthirsty barbarian, an Avatar of the very Satan. How about the lakhs killed in Indonesia by Sukarno and his successors? They were all done to death with the support of USA and the directions of CIA. How about the Vietnam War? Who is to be held responsible for the thousands of innocents killed there? How about CIA sponsored coups in Latin America? If Osama is to be haunted down and killed, who is going to do this job on the Americans? At one time, the only goal of the policemen of the world (i.e., USA) was to keep the evil forces of communism at bay. Now they don’t mind co-operating with them and forming alliances with them to fight the very same forces who they had supported earlier against their new allies! And the events happening in our sub – continent are no exception to this, SAARC or no SAARC! Because, as power equations change, the relationships between countries change! India was the midwife for the birth of Bangladesh. It liberated from them the dictatorial rule of Pakistan and today we have an Islamic alliance, which holds India as a common enemy. It was India who encouraged the LTTE and trained them in Tamil Nadu under the auspicious of RAW. It was this LTTE, which turned out against India when the Indian army was sent to Sri Lanka to liberate them from LTTE, in what was then called as a short military action! This later resulted in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. Coming nearer home, it was Indira Gandhi who encouraged Bhindranvale as a counter force to the Akalis. This ended in operation Blue Star, death of thousands and the assassination of the very same person who had encouraged the Sikh extremists – Mrs. Indira Gandhi! Not that her son was spared either, he too met a Gory end, thanks to the LTTE who finished him off in suicide bombing attack for his role in atrocities perpetrated on the Tamils by the Indian Army. In every one of these cases, the group that was nurtured by an individual turned around and bit the very hand that had fed them. In politics too we see this phenomenon. At one time the Congress party was an untouchable. In 1977, after the emergency was lifted and the elections declared, the anti – congress forces formed the Janata Party with groups as diverse as the socialists and the Jana Sangh sharing power. When this alliance fell apart, Charan Singh was supported by Congress who later withdrew support to force an election, which brought Indira Gandhi back to power. Later on when there was an anti – congress wave, V. P. Singh was supported by the BJP to become the Prime Minister. Again, when the Narasimha Rao government was defeated in the election, it was an anti – BJP platform, which included the Congress to keep the BJP out of power. Vajapayee government was supported by people like George Fernandez, Mamata Banerjee, Chandra Babu Naidu who were at one time said be against communal forces (read BJP) and were their staunch supporters! So, where goes the Common man who goes by these people’s statements! The latest in this trend is very near by at Bantwal, where the Muslim league has supported their arch – enemy BJP against their old trusted friend the Congress! So here we go ladies and gentlemen, the only constant thing in this world is changed. That includes good and evil too.
