Memoirs of Manja

Part 4

We got a room in the near by Plaza hotel- a 3 star hotel. We were spending our time happily till the money in our pockets was emptied. Even by killing somebody we were ready to live like kings. I decided to spend my life with such a satisfaction and happiness. I know lot of ways of earning money. As we had traveled throughout the night we slept. My associate had a sound sleep. He was snoring. But I could not as the problem of selling the product was torturing me constantly. Always I was thinking of how to sell that. "How to sell? Whom should I catch? This is a new place for me what to do?"

By 5 o'clock in the evening having a pocket of 5 Gms I went to a nearby petty beeda shop. As most of the owners of beeda shop are from Mangalore side I went there.

I took a cigarette and to the owner, in a mild soft tone I asked, "dear friend, if you don't think otherwise, I want to ask you one question, will you answer me?" "All right, you ask anything you want. I am happy that you are talking in Kannada, without any hesitation you can ask me". I thought he might have guessed. "I want some ganja. Where I can get it?"- I enquired. Staring at my face directly he told, "I am having it, how much do you want?"

It was like finding an oasis in the desert for me. It was my good luck indeed. I became very close to him. His name was Subhash. He was from Kundapur and unmarried and looked like a good boy. Even though he was not professional his face was friendly. He became my good friend as long as I lived in Goa. Even today he is a good friend of mine. I told him everything without any hesitation. He also felt very happy. He locked his shop immediately and came to my lodge. We exchanged our ideas regarding our business completely.

Every Wednesday there will be a foreign fair in the beach. There not only number 2 business but also all sorts of activities will go on. To be frank A to Z business will take place. I along with Subhash went to the fare. I purchased the "CHILUME" (ganja smoking equipment). Filling the ganja we started smoking in such a way that it should catch the eyes of the foreigners. If you have 10 grams of ganja it is not unlawful. We had only 10 Gms with us. After entering this world I started studying the law books also. That is how I came to know this. By that time 2 foreigners came to us as we were smoking. They were calling any drug as "Hashish".

"Oh! Hashish!!! Shall we too accompany you" "Why not? With pleasure". They identified themselves as people from Holland. "Oh, it is really good. Where did you get it?" It flashed to my mind to do some business. So I gave him 5 grams of it freely. They told me that they want more of it and took my address, later in the night contacted me in the hotel.

My associate Suresh showed them a half kg packet. They were astonished looking at the packet. I asked them "Do you want?" They nodded their heads in the affirmative. They enquired about the rate. I told them to give as much as they like. But they told me they know nothing about the rate and asked me to fix the rate. I told them that it is very costly and asked them about their requirement also. One of them told me that they want for $1000. I was upset. "As you look very friendly take it completely". He also felt very happy as I felt. Without even thinking for a second I sent my associate to Bangalore to bring the rest. I also told him to bring Malli Bhai. I had sold everything; even I didn't have anything to smoke.

The Holland people became closer to me as the days passed on. I asked Subhash to exchange the dollars as I had a great belief in him. Even he was taken as a partner in our business. He closed his shop even.

Suresh came along with Ismail bringing the remaining 4-½ kg ganja but without Malli Bhai to Goa. They brought it in four installments. To dump this I took a cottage for rent on Rs. 10000 per month. It belonged to the Tourism Department of Goa. We had all the convenience in that cottage. As it was completely independent we had no problems of any type.

We dumped the consignment. Suresh and Subhash were my most trusted agents. Ismail after co-operating in every way with me went back to Bangalore. As he too had his share of profits he started sending the consignments to me regularly. But I had not disclosed the secret of my business to him. Our business flourished and continued. We started getting huge profits. By this time I got acquainted with Goa completely. For 6 months, Goa police could not find out anything about our business. But the business we were doing was against the law.

Today or tomorrow the police will definitely come to know, as the involvement of money was too much. Too much earnings will make even the dead alive. This makes us make more enemies. Suresh was in Vasco and had started visiting the RED LIGHT AREA. Even though I was disgusted I had to keep quite as there was no other go. I too had inkling towards girls but it was well within limits. Even though I was disgusted with the conduct of Suresh, later on I developed a high opinion about him, the reason being he had a contact of a good prostitute. Because of this contact she shelved off her old business and started a new life remaining like a wife of Suresh. She started living in our cottage itself. She too became our agent. Suresh when came to cottage with her had introduced her to me as a "prostitute". I asked her why she took such a business and even chided her whether she was not ashamed to sleep with so many people for which started narrating her old life's story. TO BE CONTINUED
