Memoirs of Manja

Here is a new series for the visitors of OurKarnataka.Com (OKC). Here is a person from Mysore, who was unfortunate enough to get into the activities of the underworld, suffer from it and still fortunate enough to come out of it. As per his request, we have re-christened him to keep him out of trouble! Just to let you know, he has now gotten his bachelor and masters degree from the Open University. He is also getting trained as a web developer. He is determined to make something for himself. Our aim here is not to glorify his past deeds, but to tell you from his perspective. This is not fiction or a movie; this is the bare truth. Something for you to ponder about.

Part 9

Subhash started bringing good orders to me. He had developed a very good contact with the underworld. He had his beedashop, where all types of people used to gather and he started having contact with new faces. One day I was sitting with Karol casually talking about something. "Karol, I will be going to Mysore to bring some ganja. The rains will start within one and half months. Afterwards we won't get any money for another 5-6 months. So we have to make some money now itself". She agreed.

Next morning she gave me Rs. 20000/-. She asked me to talk with Suresh and Subhash and told me to bring goods as soon as possible. I met Subhash and Suresh and discussed about the deal. Subhash gave me Rs. 25000/- and told, "I am ready to do anything for you. You are responsible for the status I have got today. I will do all my business with you only. You please take this Rs. 25000/- for time being. Don't leave me alone".

We came to Mysore. Straightaway we went to B.R.Hills and purchased 7 kgs of ganja. But it was very difficult to transport. I took some soligas along with me and the ganja was kept in the chilly gunny bags. I kept Rs. 5000/- with me and gave Rs.5000/- to Suresh and asked him to go along with soligas to Goa. I wanted to see Mallibhai. So I went to Bangalore. It was in the night. I stayed in a small lodge. Next morning I took some daily used materials and went to see Mallibhai in the jail.

When I saw the main door of jail I was thinking when I would be coming here. I didn't know that I would be here within a couple of weeks. I spoke to the jailor and got his permission to meet Mallibhai. But the permission was not free of cost. It was a little bit costly. I had given Rs. 500/- to the jailor. We started eating "chicken palav" and discussed about our future deals. Mallibhai told me about the "Addas" where we can extract money.

Mallibhai was about to get a bail within a couple of days. We were badly in need of money to pay the advocate. I went to the "adda" on the very day as mentioned by Mallibhai. I got Rs.50000/- as well as sureties worth Rs.100000/- I paid Rs. 20000/- to Mallibhai and Rs. 30000/- to the advocate and spent my time with a friend of mine who was staying at Rajajinagar. The next day there was hearing about the bail. As there was an objection by the wife of Pete Kumar, the hearing was adjourned to next day. I never thought that all my movements have been noted. It never came to my mind at all!!!!

Next day I went to advocate's office and enquired about the bail. After a few minutes as our talks finished about the case, the advocate told me, " The police had come to me and enquired about you. Be careful". Only then I could know about the police. But I never gave any response to that. After all what evidence they have against me?? Thinking like this I kept quite.

After coming out of advocate's chamber I was walking on the Silver Jubilee Park Road alone. When I wanted to take out the cigarette lighter from my pocket I was shocked to feel a revolver inside. Then the advocate's words flashed to my mind. Immediately I became careful. "Let anything happen. I should not have entered this life. Anyhow I have already come here. I should not worry".

Thinking in this way I took an auto. But I didn't know where I should go. I have to check my purse. At any cost I should leave Bangalore. I had 4-5 thousands with me. I asked the auto driver to drop me at Yashwanthpur. It was 8 in the night. I went to Nelamangala in a bus. I took a bus to Mangalore. I got down at Channarayapattana, my hometown.

To be continued…
