Then, Madhusudana (Krishna) told the following words to Arjuna, who was as mentioned previously, was overwhelmed with pity, whose eyes were filled with tears, and was agitated, and was full of sorrow.

2.2 Sri Bhagavan (God/Sri Krishna) Said:
Arjuna, how has this illusion (of yours) overtaken you at this moment of crisis ? It is shunned by noble souls, nor it is conducive to the attainment of heaven and is the cause for infamy.

2.3 Partha (Arjuna), do not yield to the feeling of unmanliness, this is not worthy of you. O scorcher of enemies, Stand Up, shaking off this paltry (Kshudra) faint-heartedness.

2.4 Arjuna Said:
O Destroyer of Enemies (Arisudana), how can  I attack Bhishma and Drona who are worthy of deepest respect with arrows in the battle field?

2.5 It is better to live in this world begging, than slaying these noble elders; By killing these our superiors, the wealth and pleasure we are bound to get will be stained by blood.

2.6 We do not know what is better for us whether  we conquer them or they conquer us; Those sons of Dhritarashtra, whom by slaying we would not wish to live, are gathered before us

2.7 With my sould being tainted by weakness and apprehension, and my thinking bewildered regaring righteousness, I am asking you to tell me definitely good foe me. I am your disciple, surrendered to you, please instruct me.

2.8 Even after obtaining a prosperous sovereignty and kingdom on the earth, and lordship of even demigods, I do not see what can dispel this grief draining  my senses.

2.9 Sanjaya Said: 
Having addresses Hrishikesha (Sri Krishna), Arjuna (gudakeshah) The conqueror of sleep, the chastiser of enemies (paranthapah) again said to him O Govinda (Krishna)  "I shall not fight" and became silent.

2.10 q®î®±±î¯X® œ®³™°Nµ°ý®: y®äœ®š®xÝî® „Â¯Š®q® |
šµ°w®‡µ²°Š®±„®‡µ²°î®±Áuµã ï™°u®0q®ï±u®º î®X®: ||10||

2.10 Then, O Bharatha (Dhritarashtra), Situated between the two Armies, Sri Krishna as if smiling at Arjuna, addresses the following words to the grieving Arjuna:

Aýµ²°X¯ãw®w®æýµ²°X®š®ÙÉæ y®äb¯Ýî¯u¯ý®Ï „¯Ǯšµ |

2.11 Sri Bhagavan (God/Sri Krishna) Said:
You are grieving about people who are not worthy of sorrow; yet you speak like someone who is learned. The Wiseman neither sorrow over the dead or the living.

2.12 w® qµæ°î¯œ®º b¯q®± w¯š®º w® q®æº wµ°îµ±° cw¯vÃy¯: |
w® Xµ¶î® w® „®ïǯãî®±: š®îµÁ° ®±î®±q®: y®Š®º ||12||

2.12 Certainly, there was never a time when I did not exist, nor you or these Kings did not exist. And we shall never cease to exist even in future.

2.13 Just as childhood, youth and old age are attributed to the soul through this body, similarly by transmigration from one body to another the wise are never deluded.

2.14 ¯q¯äš®Þý¯Áš®±Ù N¹0qµ°‡®± þ°qµ²°Ç®Øš®±Qu®±:Qu¯ |
BS®î®¾¯y¯‰±wµ²°xq¯ãš¯Ùº›Ùr£®š®æ „Â¯Š®q® ||14||

2.14 O Son of Kunti (Arjuna), only the interaction of the senses and sense objects give cold and heat, pleasure and pain etc. These things are temporary, appearing and disappearing; therefore O the descendent of Bharatha (Arjuna), ignore them.

2.15 ‡®±º Ÿ w® î®ãs®‡®±0qµã°qµ y®¼Š®±Ç®º y®¼Š®±Ç®Ç®Á„®|
š®î®±u®±:Qš®±Qº vÃ°Š®º šµ²°î®±³q®q¯æ‡®± N®©Þqµ ||15||

2.15 O noblest of men, the wise man to whom pain and pleasure are alike, and who can not be disturbed by these, is certainly eligible for immortality.

2.16 w¯š®qµ² ïu®ãqµ „¯° w¯„¯° ïu®ãqµ š®q®: |
E„®‡µ²°Š®z u®³Çµ²Ô°0q®š®ÙÉæw®‡µ²°š®Ùq®æu®þÁ†Ã: ||16||

2.16 The unreal has no existence, and the real has no cessation; the conclusion between both the two has been analyzed by knower of the truth.

2.17 Aïw¯þ q®± q®vævÜ ‡µ±°w®  š®î®Áï±u®º q®q®º |
ïw¯ý®î®±î®ã‡®±š¯Úš®ã w® N®þÏq®Êq®±Áî®±œ®Ár ||17||

2.17 But know that the entity which pervaded this entire body is indestructible; No one has the power to destroy the soul.

2.18 A0q®î®0q® Cîµ± uµ°œ¯ xq®ãšµ²ã°N¯Ù: ý®‹°‹o: |
Aw¯þwµ²°y®äîµ±°‡®±š®ã q®š¯âu®±ÜÉãuÂ®ãš®æ „Â¯Š®q® ||18||

2.18 The soul is eternal in its existence, it is indestructible and infinite. Hence, O  the descendent of Bharatha (Arjuna), fight the war.

2.19 ‡®± Iw®º îµ°rÙ œ®0q¯Š®º ‡®±ýµÏȶw®º î®±w®ãqµ œ®q®º |
E„¹ q¹ w® ïb¯x°qµ²° w¯‡®±º œ®0r w® œ®w®ãqµ ||19||

2.19 Anyone who thinks that a soul can slay and anyone who thinks a soul is slain, are both ignorant. The soul neither kills, nor is killed.

2.20 w® b¯‡®±q¬ ï±ä‡®±qµ î¯ N®u¯Yw¬ w¯‡®±º „®²q¯æ „®ïq¯ î¯ w® „®²‡®±: |
Abµ²° xq®ãº ý¯ý®æqµ²°‡®±º y®¼Š¯nµ²° w® œ®w®ãqµ œ®w®ã¯wµ ý®‹°Šµ ||20||

2.20 The soul is never born nor does it die. Nor does it come into being again when the body is created. The soul is birth-less, eternal, everlasting and timeless; and is never destroyed when the body gets destroyed.

2.21  îµ°u¯ïw¯þw®î®¾¬ xq®ãº ‡®± Iw®î®±cî®±î®ã‡®±º |
N®s®º š® y®¼Š®±Ç®: y¯s®Á N®º U¯q®‡®±r œ®0r N®î®¾¬ ||21||

2.21 O Partha (Arjuna), one who knows the soul as eternal, birth less, imperishable and indestructible; how does that person cause death to anyone and whom does he slay ?

2.22 ¯0r d°n¯Áx ‡®±s¯ ‡®± w®î¯x S®³œ®n¯x w®Šµ²°y®Š¯p |
q®s¯ œ®‹°Š¯p ‡®± d°n¯Áw®ãw¯ãx š®0‡®¾¯x w®î¯x uµ°Ÿ ||22||

2.22 Just like humans giving up worn-up garments, accepts new garments, the embodied soul giving up old and worn up bodies, readily accepts new ones.

2.23 wµ¶w¬0 a0u®0r ý®š¯ôp wµ¶w®0 u®œ®r y¯î®N®: |
w® Xµ¶w®º Nµå°u®‡®±0q¯ãyµ½° w® ýµ²°Ç®‡®±r ¯Š®±q®: ||23||

2.23 Weapons can not harm the soul, nor can fire burn it; water can not wet and wind can not dry up the soul.

2.24 AXµÐ°uµ²ã° ‡®±º Au¯œµ²ã°‡®±î®±Nµå°uµ²ãýµ²°Ç®ã Iî® X® |
xq®ã: š®î®ÁS®q®: š¯Úo±Š®X®Œµ²°‡®±º š®w¯q®w®: ||24||

2.24 because this soul is indestructible, the soul is incombustible, insoluble, and unwitherable. The soul is eternal, all pervading, unmodifiable, immovable, and primordial.

2.25 Aî®ãNµ²Ù° ‡®±î®¾¬ Y0qµ²ã° ‡®±î®¾¬ ïN¯‡µ²Á°‡®±î®±±X®ãqµ |
q®š¯âuµ°î®º ïvqµæÈ¶w® w¯w®±ýµ²°Yq®±î®±œ®Á› ||25||

2.25 It is declared that the soul is imperceptible, the soul is inconceivable, the soul is immutable; therefore understanding the soul as such, it is improper for you to lament.

2.26 As® Xµ¶w® xq®ãb¯q®º xq®ãº î¯ î®±w®ãšµ î®±³q®º |
q®s¯z q®æº î®±œ¯„¯œµ²° wµ¶î®º ýµ²°Yq®±î®±œ®Á› ||26||

2.26 O mighty armed one (Arjuna), even if you think the soul always takes birth or is always subjected to constant birth and death , you should not grieve like this.

2.27 b¯q®š®ã Ÿ u®±äîµ½° î®±´q®±ãu®±ä cw®â î®±³q®š®ã X®|
q®š¯âu®y®‹œ¯‡µ²ÁsµÁ° w® q®æº ýµ²°Yq®±î®±œ®Á› ||27||

2.27 (Because) in that case, death is certain for the born and rebirth is inevitable for the dead. You should not, therefore, lament for an inevitable situation.

2.28 Aî®ãN¯Ùv°x „®²q¯x î®ãN®Ùî®±u¯ãx „Â¯Š®q® |
Aî®ãN¯Ùxu®w¯wµã°î® q®q®ä N¯ y®‹uµ°î®w¯ ||28||

2.28 O Arjuna, of created  beings before birth is unknown, it is known between birth and death, after death it is again unknown; hence what is the cause for lamenting ?

2.29 Bý®Ï‡®±Áî®q®Þý®ãr N®þÏuµ°w®î®¾¬ Bý®Ï‡®±Áî®u®æu®r q®sµ¶î® X¯w®ã: |
Bý®Ï‡®±Áî®XµÏȶw®î®±w®ã: ý®³nµ²°r ý®²äq¯æyµã°w®î®¾¬ îµ°u® w® Xµ¶î® N®þÏq¬ ||29||

2.29 Some see the soul as amazing and some others describe the soul as amazing; similarly some others hear the soul as amazing and even some  others have  no knowledge about it.

2.30 uµ°Ÿ° xq®ãî®±î®uµ²ã°‡®±º uµ°œµ š®î®Áš®ã „Â¯Š®q® |
Aš¯âq®éî¯Áp „®²q¯p  w® q®æº ýµ²°Yq®î®±œ®Á› ||30||

2.30 O the descendent of Bharatha (Arjuna), the embodied soul residing inside every living entity is indestructible; there fore you should not feel the sorrow for anyone.

2.31 š®æu®Áî®±z X¯îµ°£®Èã w® ïN®ºzq®±î®±œ®Á› |
u®¯ãÁvÜ ‡®±±u¯ÜXµÐÉä°‡µ²°w®ãq® £®r䇮±š®ã w® ïu®ãqµ ||31||

2.31 Besides, considering your own righteousness, you should not waver, for there is nothing more appropriate for the upholders of justice (a Kshatriya) than a war for righteousness.

2.32 ‡®±u®³X¯Ð‡®± Xµ²°y®y®q®äº š®æS®Áu¯æŠ®î®±y¯î®³q®º |
š®±Rw®: £®r䇮±: y¯s®Á ©„®0qµ ‡®±±u®Üï±°u®³ý®º ||32||

2.32 O Partha, happy are the Kshatriyas (upholders of justice) who get such an opportunity of this kind presented by its own accord, and which is a wide open path to Heavenly Gates.

2.33  As®  Xµ°q¯æï±î®±º u®ãÁº š®0S¯äî®±º w® N®‹Ç®ã› |
q®q®: š®æu®Áº O°rÁº X® Ÿq¯æ y¯y®î®±î¯y®éÉã› ||33||

2.33 However, if you do not engage in this war of righteousness, then abandoning  your spiritual duty and losing your reputation will make you incur sin.

2.34 AO°rÁº X¯z „®²q¯x N®s®‰±Ç®ã0r qµ°‡®±‡®¾¯º |
š®0„¯ïq®š®ã X¯O°rÁî®±ÁŠ®n¯u®r‹Ç®ãqµ ||34||

2.34 Also  (if you do not engage in this war of righteousness), people will always speak about your infamy; and for respected people infamy is worse than death.

2.35 „®‡®¾¯u®än¯u®±y®Š®q®º î®±ºš®ã0qµ q¯æº î®±œ¯Š®s¯: |
‡µ±°Ç¯º X® q®æº …œ®±î®±qµ²° „®²q¯æ ‡®¾¯š®ã› Œ¯U®î®º ||35||

2.35 The might chariot warriors (Maha Ratha) who have been thinking highly of you, will despise you, thinking that you declined engaging in war due to fear.

2.36 Aî¯X®ãî¯u¯0ý®Ï …œ®²w®ævÇ®ã0r q®î¯Ÿq¯: |
x0u®0q®š®Ùî® š¯î®±s®ãÁº q®qµ²° u®±:Qq®Š®º w®± Oº ||36||

2.36 (And), your enemies will tell many unspeakable insulting words; Alas, what can  be more painful than  that ?

2.37 œ®qµ²° î¯ y¯äy®ã› š®æS®Áº dq¯æ î¯ „µ²£®Èãšµ î®±Ÿ°º |
q®š¯âu®±rÙÇ®Õ N¹0qµ°‡®± ‡®±±u¯Ü‡®± N®³q®xý®Ï‡®±: ||37||

2.37  If you die (in the battlefield), you will go to the heavens, if you win you will enjoy the earth; therefore O the son of Kunti, rise up and fight.

2.38 š®±Qu®±:Pµ° š®îµ±° N®³q¯æ Œ¯„¯Œ¯„¹ c‡®¾¯c‡®¾¹ |
q®qµ²° ‡®±±u¯Ü‡®± ‡®±±cãš®æ wµ¶î®º y¯y®î®±î¯y®éÉã› ||38||

2.38 Being neutral during phases of happiness or unhappiness, gain or loss, victory or defeat; thereafter prepare for the fight.. and this way you would not incur any sin.

2.39 Iǯ qµ°†ÃŸq¯ š¯0Pµã° …±v܇µ²Á°Sµ° ræî®¾¯º ý®³o± |
…±u®Ü‡®¾¯ ‡®±±Nµ²Ù° ‡®±‡®¾¯ y¯s®Á N®î®±Á…0u®º y®äœ¯š®ã› ||39||

2.39 O Arjuna, I have explained to you this attitude of mind from the point of view of Jnanayoga (spiritual intelligence); now listen to standpoint of Karma yoga (science of actions without desires), this will completely release you from shackles of Karma (bondage of reactions from actions).

2.40 wµ°œ¯†ÃN®äî®±w¯ýµ²°›Ù y®äq®ãµ² ïu®ãqµ |
𮿩Þî®±y®ãš®ã u®Áš®ã q®ä‡®±qµ î®±œ®qµ²° „®‡®¾¯q¬ ||40||

2.40 In this path (of Karmayoga), there is no loss of effort, there is diminution of result and even  the slightest effort performed righteously saves from greatest of Danger
