Chapter 3
KarmaYoga (Yoga of
Actions)
Synopsis:
1-8: Importance of the performing one's
duty, in a detached way, as per GnanaYoga and KarmaYoga.
9-16: It is good and necessary to sacrifice.
17-24: It is necessary for the wise as well as the god to act wisely; for
betterment of the whole world.
25-35: Definitions of the wise and unwise; how to perform action without
attraction or repulsion.

3.21 The common man will always follow
whichever and however a great man conducts himself; The common men will follow
whatever the wise men accept as the Authority.

3.22 O Partha (Arjuna), There is no prescribed
duty for me in the three worlds, nor there is anything to be attained or
anything unattained. Yet, I still continue to perform the actions prescribed in
the Vedic scriptures.

3.23 O son of Pritha (Arjuna), if I do not
engage in the prescribed actions (Karma), all the common men would certainly
follow my path in all respects.

3.24 If I stop performing the prescribed
actions, the world will be ruined. I would be the cause of confusion and
destruction of the people.

3.25 O Arjuna, when the ignorant common men act
with attachment, the wise men should act without attachment for the benefit of
the world.

3.26 A wise man should not create confusion in
the minds of common men who attached to all the desirable actions. He should,
being unattached, perform all the prescribed activities, thus keeping the common
ignorant men totally engaged.

3.27 All actions are actually performed by the
materialistic senses. The fool, whose mind is deluded by false identification of
being a "body".. feels that "I am the doer (of these
actions)".

3.28 O mighty armed Arjuna, However, he who has
complete understanding of actions of the senses and Gunas, he would understand
that it is the senses that engage in sense objects and he would not become
attached.

3.29 The common men become entangled in actions
because they are deluded by Gunas; the man with perfect knowledge should not
disturb the those fools.

3.30 Hence, surrender all actions unto me;
Establish your consciousness firmly in the knowledge of self-being, totally
unattached, with no desire for gain,; fight the war without any grief.

3.31 Those human beings who always follow my
teachings with complete faith and without envy, will all be free of attachment
of reactions from actions.

3.32 However, those who find fault in my
teachings and do not follow them; they are deluded by knowledge, deviated about
the purpose of their very existence.

3.33 Even a knowledgeable man according
to his own nature and mind. Likewise, All living entities are controlled by
their own nature. In such a scenario, What will be accomplished by
external restraint ?

3.34 Senses will always, either be attracted or
be repulsed by the sense-objects. One should not be controlled by the senses
because they are the obstacles in one's path.

3.35 Performing one's own duty (prescribed in
the Vedic writings) though with faults, is always better than perfectly
performing someone else's duty. Even death while performing one's own duty is
better than performing other's duties which is filled with fear.

What forces a man to perform sinful acts.. sometimes even involuntarily.. as if
driven by some force ?

3.37 God said:
It is desire arising from the mode of passion that becomes anger. This
desire (lust) is insatiable, is extremely sinful and the biggest enemy in this
world.

3.38 Like fire covered by a cloud of smoke,
like dust covering the mirror, and like the embryo covered by the womb; so
is the knowledge when covered by desire.

3.39 O the son of Kunti, this perpetual enemy
called desire, affects the decision making of even the most knowledgeable
persons, and it is insatiable like fire.

3.40 The senses, the mind and the intellect are
said to be the strong-hold of desire. One's soul is deluded by this desire
because it affects the ability to decide.

3.41 Therefore O Arjuna, You must first control
your senses, and then destroy this enemy called "desire (lust)"
which obstructs knowledge and realization.

3.42 It is said that the senses are superior..
but mind is superior to the senses. Intellect is superior to mind and individual
consciousness is the greatest of all.

3.43 Knowing that the individual consciousness
is superior to intellect, O mighty armed one (Arjuna), steady your mind by self
realization and conquer this enemy inside you called "desire".

Thus, in the Upanishad sung by the Lord, the
science of Brahma, the scripture of Yoga, the dialogue between Sri Krishna and
Arjuna, end the third chapter entitled "Karmayoga or the the Yoga of Action"
