5.1 Arjuna said:
O Krishna, you are praising the Yoga of Knowledge (SankhyaYoga) and then also
the Yoga of renouncing the activities. Please tell me which of the two is
definitely better ?

5.2 The Lord said:
The Yoga of action and the yoga of knowledge both lead to the path of
liberation. But, the Yoga of action (Karmayoga) is superior to the Yoga of
Knowledge.

5.3 O Arjuna (Mahabaho, the one with might
Arms), the one who neither detests nor desires is considered a
"nithya sanyaasi" (always a renouncer); he who is already free from
the dualities (like detest and desire, happiness and unhappiness) is easily
liberated from bondage.

5.4 The ignorant and not the educated who say
that The Yoga of Action and the Yoga of Knowledge are different would lead to
different results. If one perfectly engages in even one of them will gain the
results of both.

5.5 The ultimate state which is achieved by a
SankhyaYogi (by renunciation of actions) is also attained by the KarmaYogi
(performing the prescribed actions). Therefore, only he who can see the
KarmaYoga and SankhyaYoga as one, is the one who actually understands
everything.

5.6 O Mighty Armed One (Arjuna),
SankhyaYoga (renunciation of Actions) is difficult to accomplish without
following KarmaYoga (performing the prescribed actions). KarmaYogi, is a wise
man and he will attain the Ultimate truth or "Brahma" in no time.

5.7 The KarmaYogi, who performs the prescribed
actions, who is of pure intelligence, who has mastered his mind and senses, is
not affected by the actions even when he is performing the actions; because he
has identified himself with the God (self of all beings).

5.8-5.9 A performer of prescribed activities
knows that it is the senses that are engaged in the various sense objects;
he never thinks that he is doing anything even though he is seeing, hearing,
touching, smelling, eating, moving, sleeping, breathing, speaking, excreting and
grasping; it is just like opening and closing of eye lids.

the Ultimate Truth (God), and he who has given up the attachment, will not be
touched by sin; just like a lotus leaf in water.

perform the actions by the body, mind, intelligence and by the separated senses,
doe the sake of self-purification.

5.12 The Karmayogis (performer of the
prescribed actions) offers the results of the actions to god, obtains
everlasting peace (God realization); but a performer of actions with
selfish motive, gets tied down by the obsession to the results of the actions.

5.13 The self-controlled (Sankhyayogi),
mentally renouncing results of all the actions he performs, rests happily in
God, free from thoughts that he is actual doer of anything or he is the cause of
anything. He mentally relegates all actions to the mansion with nine gates (the
body with nine openings).

5.14 The Lord creates neither human
(misconceptions) about identification of actions, nor the actions themselves,
nor one's contact with the results of actions. It is the modes of material
nature (swabhavaha) , engaging in actions.
