U. V. Kini: My visit to Tea - Estate
When we entered the Tea Estate, we were not prepared for what greeted us. The Deafening Silence! We are so used to the sounds of civilization like sounds of vehicles, blaring horns, music, sounds of the fan or AC, ring tones of the mobiles etc. that the total absence of sound makes us uncomfortable. In the Tea Estate the silence is so complete that it is unnerving. I did not realize it while driving into the estate because of the sound of the car engine, but as soon as I got out of the car the total absence of sound made me think that my ears were blocked. Toilet seat and the art of syntax
Funny thing (to us, “ignorant” Indians) is that spouses abroad express their love saying “Darling, you know how much I love you, I always leave the toilet seat up/down for you!!!”. Marriages abroad are said to have broken up because of the up / down issue. Automatic toilet seats so that “marriages can be saved”, have been invented. These automatically come down two minutes after being lifted. The device costs just about $50. Read On

Unnatural Births
I was a visiting a friend of mine in the hospital and was witness to a scene, which made me write this article. An anxious husband was berating a Doctor about his wife’s labour pains. Apparently the doctor was hesitant about making a Caesarean Section (CS), a rare case nowadays as I will elaborate later. The man was angrily questioning the doctor as to why he was not making the CS as his wife’s labour pains were unbearable. Read On

Fear of Flying
The MD calls me and says “We have to file these papers in the Supreme Court immediately. Go to Delhi by today’s flight itself and discuss the case with our lawyers”. I think “Oh s***!. Delhi? That’s two and a quarter hour’s flight from Goa. What if something goes wrong during a flight that long? What if the engines fail? …” I have this morbid fear of flying and am especially petrified of long flights. Read On

Vivaha Mattu Viraha
Then came the “Viraha” (separation- in kannada). After about one month of marital bliss, Jaya had to go back to college to finish her third year. If this was a “reel – life” drama, the background song of the scene would have been: Virahaaaa nooru nooru taraha Virahaaaa prema kaavyada kahi baraha…. (Kannada film: YeDakallu guDDada mEle) I used to make a trip to Mangalore almost every weekend during that period. Read On

BEYBLADE
I don't think any other toy has captured the attention and imagination of the children more than the Beyblade. For the uninformed, Beyblade is an adventure story of kids, which was telecast on Cartoon Network. The Beyblade is a top with serrated edges, which is spun with a contraption called a launcher. In the TV serial, magical creatures (bit beasts) would rise from them during a Beyblade battle. Read On

Dentists
When I came to Goa, I used to go to a dentist who would assign his assistant (a qualified dentist) to me. She was a pretty little thing who was good at her work. I used to love it when she would put her dainty little fingers in my mouth. I was unmarried at that time. It was the first time a grown up pretty woman had put her fingers in my mouth! I used to be sorry when each session was over. Read On

Barbers
Among the many things that a man loves is, to be given a shave by another. It is a good feeling. You sit back in the barber's chair with your eyes closed and enjoy the trip. The lathering of your face, the shaving and the massaging of your face with cream later, is an experience you have to go through to enjoy. For me though, the head massage at the end of the haircut is something I enjoy more than the shave. Read On

Lawyers
LAWYERS! Their very mention sets my teeth on edge. I' ll explain why. I have nothing against them personally. It's just their behaviour as a lawyer that sets my teeth on edge. Don't know what comes over them when they wear a black coat and step into court. They are a necessary evil. You cannot do without them. But I just pray that I may never fall into their clutches. There are some good lawyers too, but they are few and far between.
