  1. Take a look at your plate... are most of the foods plant-based ? Fill your plates with generous servings of a variety of veggies, fruits, beans, and grains.
  2. Slice ripe peaches, bananas and/or berries on your whole grain cereal.
  3. Add a variety of veggies to your salads for good health, exciting flavour and texture. Try leafy lettuce with chopped red cabbage, ripe tomatoes, shredded carrots, chickpeas or kidney beans, diced red peppers and broccoli florets.
  4. Try a new produce item with each trip to the supermarket. Become acquainted with mangoes, yams, jicama, leeks, kale, and many others.
  5. Substitute whole wheat flour for part of refined white flour in many recipes.
  6. Keep fit with a variety of activities you enjoy to make a exercise a lifelong habit and maintain your weight. Try walking, cycling, dancing or gardening.
  7. Take a brisk walk for 10 minutes several times each day.
  8. Instead of alcohol, enjoy a refreshing mix of fruit juice and seltzer. Add a few chunks of fresh fruit.
  9. Decrease portion sizes of meat and poultry. Remove half the filling from an over-stuffed deli sandwich. Update a favorite casserole by changing the meat-to-vegetable ratio: chicken and pasta casserole with broccoli can become pasta and broccoli casserole with chicken.
  10. Cut down on fat... remove skin from poultry, use little fat in cooking, and try low fat or nonfat dairy products. Remember that low fat and nonfat products are not necessarily low in calories, so limit portions.
  11. Instead of salt, experiment with herbs and spices such as rosemary, oregano, basil, turmeric, or chives for added flavor.
  12. Refrigerate foods quickly to prevent spoilage.
  13. Grill out only occasionally, and do not eat charred foods.
